Why is it so hard for people to stay at home

pissedoffretailworker · 04/04/2020 17:19

I have just got home from work. It has been manic today! People have queued for hours to come buy crap! I feel like people just aren't listening and are just freely out shopping for all these goods that are not essential. Browsing for over an hour in store and buying goods that we really shouldn't be selling.
This board and my other social media are full of people justifying their need to go buy gardening supplies or paint or walk their dog 6 times a day. As if they are special 🤷🏻‍♀️
Mental health is cited as a reason for people to continue to be selfish and put their own desires first instead of doing what is needed to help the nhs and protect the vulnerable.
I am feeling more and more angry at these people. I wish I could stay at home and keep my children safe. I certainly wouldn't be taking them to the shops to buy crap. My kids have not left the house other than to play in the garden since the 9th of March. I only go to work. I'm lucky in that I have a reoccurring delivery slot from a supermarket and have done for a long time so don't need to go shopping. I know I'm the grand scheme of things I'm better off than some people but I'm so stressed by other people's lack of care. What will it take to get these people to listen?

We are staying at home if that helps 🤷‍♀️

Lookingforwardtomyeastereggs · 04/04/2020 17:32

We're staying at home.

Dh still has to go out to work, we are doing one shop a week. Other than that haven't been out.

pissedoffretailworker · 04/04/2020 17:33

I know that many people are being scrupulously well behaved about all this, I just don't understand the rest. I live in the Aneurin Bevan health board area and the lack of people complying is huge. My area is ignoring the pleas to stay at home and I really don't understand why?

OP posts:
IceKitten · 04/04/2020 17:36

Staying at home here. We haven't left the house for two weeks except to exercise and buy food.

sociallydistained · 04/04/2020 17:39

I haven't been shopping since lockdown was enforced. I'm getting creative with the food staples now lol.

If I was in your position, OP I'd be pissed off too. They need to state and state again the risks these unnecessary trips are causing people in your position.

I've got a feeling some of my friends are out doing unnecessary shopping trips like this for something to do. I don't get it!

Titsywoo · 04/04/2020 17:40

I dunno but my neighbour was outside on his drive as I was coming home from exercising and asked if I "believe in all this" because apparently he doesn't. I saw him talking to some other people on our road earlier and they were all basically saying it's all bollocks. I had to just walk away - there's no arguing with stupid. More people seeming to get upset with worries about 5G than this. I'm honestly starting to think we'd be better off if a massive asteroid hit us tonight. The human race is depressing me.

N.B. I know the majority of people are decent and kind and of average or above intelligence Wink

WhoWants2Know · 04/04/2020 17:41

I've almost become afraid to leave the house now! My electric is on emergency credit and I'm wondering if I can stretch until tomorrow to go buy more.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 04/04/2020 17:42

Well, what is 'crap'? I did a shop for the whole week today and bought Easter eggs, biscuits, wine, junky cereal, ready made pizza - but I also bought a load of veg, fruit and all the other things that will feed my family for a week. I was in store for over an hour - I haven't done a full weekly shop in store for about three years (we normally get a delivery every week) and I was shocked at how long it took - I can't believe people voluntarily do it each week under normal circumstances! - but I was going at fast as I could while maintaining distance, which slowed it down a lot. I won't go out again for a week, until the next shop. Is that ok? I go for a single walk, maintaining distance always, most days, either alone or with my toddler, and it's the highlight of my whole day and gives me this sense of calm that I constantly crave. Is that ok?

FaFoutis · 04/04/2020 17:42

If you work in a shop you are probably getting a skewed idea of noncompliance because you are seeing all the people who are stretching the rules.

Napqueen1234 · 04/04/2020 17:42

Some people have horrible homes, no gardens, don’t own a fridge, victims of domestic violence, mental heath issues, struggling with small children etc and are using getting out of the house as a coping mechanism. I’m not saying it’s right but it’s easy to criticise when you have a recurring delivery slot and potentially a nice house and garden. For some people the risks of getting covid are less (for them) than the risk of staying inside for weeks on end. It’s complex

notangelinajolie · 04/04/2020 17:42

I've it been out since 12th March and I'm ok with that. I guess some people just can't bear to be locked up inside.

CendrillonSings · 04/04/2020 17:43

By definition, half the population is of below average intelligence.

There are over 66 million people in the UK Shock

notangelinajolie · 04/04/2020 17:43

*not

ukgift2016 · 04/04/2020 17:44

:/ busybody

pissedoffretailworker · 04/04/2020 17:46

@LisaSimpsonsbff I mean cushions and candles, home decor and paint, gardening supplies and furniture. My understanding of this lockdown is that people can shop for food and medicine. Why people aren't following the instructions isn't making sense to me. My life is being put at risk because other people feel their right to decorate their homes is more important 🤷🏻‍♀️

Mysocalledlifexx · 04/04/2020 17:47

We are also staying in just my DH going a food shop. We are on day 18 of staying in we havent even been out in the garden.
My DH has to go out to get food we have a large family & no delivery slots anywhere so some have no choice but to go do a food shop.

IceKitten · 04/04/2020 17:51

According to the BBC most people are observing the lockdown.

pissedoffretailworker · 04/04/2020 17:56

I agree that people need to go buy food I would go to the supermarkets if I had to. I know I'm really lucky that I don't have to! I walk to work and see people out for a walk I understand that is allowed and while we can people who want to should do, but I don't understand people browsing and shopping as normal especially while taking their children to do this!
I don't think I'm a busybody I just feel like I'm worried about myself and my family because these people are refusing to comply.
I know that without them I wouldn't have a job and my company would have to close stores. I wish they would be a responsible retailer and stop the sale of these goods but I know they won't unless forced to.
I feel sad that as a society so many people don't feel they have to follow the rules or even make an effort to.
I've seen some people justify buying stuff as they were there to buy food/cleaning products anyway but the majority of shoppers buying frivolous goods are there specifically for these items.

OP posts:
Haworthia · 04/04/2020 18:01

I keep hearing people saying “ban the shops from selling non-essentials!” Where do you draw the line? Biscuits and cake? Booze? Orange squash (water is available on tap after all)? Are we supposed to make ourselves as miserable as possible during all this?

FWIW I haven’t been out, even to shop for food, for 12 days.

eurochick · 04/04/2020 18:48

Your poor kids. Take them out for a walk. You are a much bigger infection risk to them than a run around the park.

Ohffs66 · 04/04/2020 18:49

I think there's a big difference between doing a weekly shop and throwing some ice cream, a bunch of flowers and a magazine in your trolley as 'treats', and going to the shop specifically for those items. The former makes perfect sense, the latter is what some people are doing under the guise of 'those things are essentials TO ME'

pissedoffretailworker · 04/04/2020 19:57

My kids have a large garden with play equipment they have a trampoline, a swing, a slide, water and sand play tables room to use their scooters and bikes and a large grassy area to run around. They are much safer there than the park. I take every precaution I can when I come home. I worry so much about picking up the virus or carrying it home on my clothes/shoes.
I'm doing my best to keep them as safe as I can. Until I can't go to work I have to go or I won't earn any money to keep them in our home or feed them. Believe me I would much rather not be their biggest risk of infection.

OP posts:
RingtheBells · 04/04/2020 20:01

All that play equipment you have OP is quite dangerous and could result in an unnecessary trip to A and E , especially the trampoline

BilboBercow · 04/04/2020 20:02

Aren't you lucky to have such a well equipped garden op? Keeping your kids well entertained.

MrsWolf2 · 04/04/2020 20:03

This isn’t the point at all but your garden sounds amazing!

I would be pissed off in your position too. For what it’s worth I haven’t been to the shops for 24 or 25 days, can’t quite remember.
