For the developed and resourced country that we are, we are potentially going to be overtaking Italy and Spain by the looks of things.
Australia and other nations have death rates in double figures. They were smart to close borders and even close regions. Canada the same. Denmark, etc. The list goes on. South Korea have the situation under control.
We were warned about this. I feel like majority of those deaths could have been avoided.

This tread is full of hysteria. Please calm down peeps and basically 'shut up'. Stick to the rules, chin up and see how we get on. But please please - stop moaning

managedmis · 03/04/2020 19:55

How many of those saying lockdown should have been sooner went into their own lockdown back then?

^

This.

No-one bothered. Because they didn't think it applied to them.

Confused
managedmis · 03/04/2020 19:55

If there was ever a time for hysteria, now is it

mochajoes · 03/04/2020 19:56

@blossomad from that article you linked it states the dangers about the lack of PPE but I can't see any that states every future pandemic would attack the lungs & require ventilators?

Easilyanxious · 03/04/2020 19:59

Those saying we should of shut all airports , ports etc how long would you do this for ? As unfortunately this is going to be around a while most likely . Also goods have to come in via airports etc , medical goods , food etc so not entirely possible to shut the whole thing down . It won't be known for probably years who did what right and when

koshkatt · 03/04/2020 20:03

If there was ever a time for hysteria, now is it

Because that will help how exactly?

Justaboy · 03/04/2020 20:03

Blossomad Germany did, did they?. I seem to remeber hearing on the wireless the other day that they said that don't do enough testing as they don't have enough test kits!..

Lovemusic33 · 03/04/2020 20:03

Can always rely on mumsnet to make you anxious and suicidal.

We don’t know what will happen over the coming days or weeks other than more people will die, we don’t know when this will end, we don’t know if it will come back again. Posting hysteria on mumsnet will not change the future.

There is only one thing we can do and that stay in, not too tricky?

We have no control over what the government are doing or not doing. We all have our own coping strategies, we are all scared and worried about the unknown but there’s fuck all we can do other than what we are being told to do.

GivenchyD · 03/04/2020 20:06

'there was ever a time for hysteria, now is it'

No, there isn't. It is incredibly tragic that people are dying but with a global pandemic that will happen. Our NHS is not overwhelmed, that is good surely? As I said France's sad deaths are 1120!!!! They have a stricter lockdown.

Twitter is as bad as MN, people wanting to score political points when we are actually doing ok in the circumstances.

BlackNoir · 03/04/2020 20:09

I'm angry yes. I'm nursing colleagues on ventilators in ICU. They risked their lives (and are quite likely to lose them) to look after members of the public who are still behaving like idiots and don't think the restrictions apply to them because they're special.

In fact, I'm really fucking angry!

MH1111 · 03/04/2020 20:10

The lockdown is simply designed to reduce pressure on the NHS. It has to be timed for maximum effect as you can only lock people down for so long - it’s behavioural science.

Locking down earlier would have hit the nhs hard and caused more deaths.

Herd immunity followed by a vaccine is the only way the virus will be stopped

Justaboy · 03/04/2020 20:10

Somewhere in a galaxy light years away is a large lump of space rock thats heading for us, its on its way and one day all wont be well in this life and world.

Now who will vote in spending the gross national product of say two or three counties in order to devlop a space rocket powerfull enough to get out there a long way away to give this rock a "shove" so it doesent hit us?

Now that would be a very good investment as we'd all survive but we're now doing that now or anytime soon I wonder why?.

And it has happened, remember the poor old Dinos?.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 03/04/2020 20:13

If there was ever a time for hysteria, now is it

What will hysteria achieve??

All people can do is focus on keeping them and the ones in the household safe by following the lockdown rules.

Bet yes get hysterical..panic yourself for what reason I’m not sure...but if that’s what does it for you go ahead

CendrillonSings · 03/04/2020 20:13

How can anyone blame anything or anyone apart from a Brexit obsessed government?

Ludicrous as always. Do all the countries with higher death rates than ours also have Brexit-obsessed governments?

Greenpop21 · 03/04/2020 20:16

Hey @mochajoes great username Wink

CendrillonSings · 03/04/2020 20:16

As I said France's sad deaths are 1120!!!! They have a stricter lockdown.

Much higher, I’m afraid: 5,387 as of yesterday.

First CUH patient in national Covid-19 Trial

27 March 2020

Herd immunity followed by a vaccine is the only way the virus will be stopped

Yes that will take quite some time meanwhile a bit of good news:)

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has today (Friday, 27 March) enrolled its first patient into a national trial aimed at identifying treatments for Covid-19.

The Randomised Evaluation of Covid-19 Therapy (RECOVERY) Trial, led by Oxford researchers, will test several medications that are safely used for other conditions, and have shown promise in other countries.
Fighting the virus

The opportunity to join this trial will be offered to adults who are hospitalised with Covid-19 at Addenbrooke's, and other participating NHS hospitals across the country, and who do not have health conditions that would interact with the trial drugs.

There are three drugs being tested in the first stages of the trial, including hydroxychloroquine, which is similar to a drug used to treat malaria. However, the trial follows an adaptive design, which means that if further drugs show promise, they can be added to this trial.

The trial results will be regularly reviewed so that any treatments that are found to be effective can be made available to all patients.

Local principal investigator, Dr Martin Knolle, said: “this is an example of Cambridge researchers, as part of a national effort, pulling together to deliver potentially life-saving treatments in record time in the most difficult of circumstances. I am very proud of our team and research community for this response."

DarnedSocks · 03/04/2020 20:18

@Blossomad How awful. I'm so sorry Flowers

Evilspiritgin · 03/04/2020 20:21

There are 17,000 killed in the U.K. by flu but I can guarantee most of you don’t give a fuck about them or the People who are immunosuppressive
These forums are full of people banging on about their rights to go on holiday with a child with dv or chickenpox

As long as the fucking middle class do what they want

I also see nobody has been able to tell me what are death rate would be if we classified deaths in the same way as the Germans

Queeftastic · 03/04/2020 20:23

Yes, I am both.

The Gov attitude at the start was that priorities lay clearly elsewhere, we were on our own. Feels like any arrangements to physically protect the country, financially help people survive or equip the NHS has only come after pressure.

Now NHS staff facing threats from managers to keep quiet about the lack of ppe. Angry and embarassed? Livid.

PieceOfMaria · 03/04/2020 20:24

we are potentially going to be overtaking Italy and Spain by the looks of things.

The looks of what things? What evidence do you have to suggest that this might be the case OP?

Yolo2 · 03/04/2020 20:25

I'm not saying whether the government has done a good job or not. However, remember that lockdown is a delaying tactic. It's not a solution. It just slows the spread. If/ when demand for beds exceeds supply, we would really know if lockdown was too late. People were going to get ill before lockdown, during lockdown and after lockdown. Short of a vaccine or wonder drug, lockdown just delays. So locking down earlier wouldn't have had a real impact on numbers unless hospitals do end up overwhelmed. It might have cut the numbers now, but they will just go up again anyway once we end restrictions.

PicturesOfCats · 03/04/2020 20:28

People were going to get ill before lockdown, during lockdown and after lockdown

I genuinely don’t think a lot of people realise this. Even now.
I think they think lockdown will STOP people getting the virus, rather than just slow down the rate.

GivenchyD · 03/04/2020 20:28

'Much higher, I’m afraid: 5,387 as of yesterday'

No I meant France has sadly lost 1120 in the last 24hrs. So there is nothing to be angry or ashamed about. This country is doing well to have an NHS that is coping and financial help given for employees and businesses.

It will peak, plateau then in the coming weeks gradually restraints will be lifted. People just have to stop trying to whip everyone up into a hysterical frenzy.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 03/04/2020 20:31

Can always rely on mumsnet to make you anxious and suicidal.
Indeed. I was just thinking before I read that comment that I'm only on MN this evening because I'm bored.

So I'm finding myself my knitting and a video and a glass of rum.

The situation is grim and some mild escapism is probably good for most of us.
