Maybe they have just got lucky but they aren't in complete lockdown. There is social distancing and other measures in place. But with masks, not coughing on people, a few rules, could we make it work?

There is no comparison.

Look at the land mass between the uk and Sweden.

They have just over ten million people in their entire population.

The uk has 66 million- 9 million alone in London.

We are densely populated in the UK and this will clearly have a detrimental impact on infection/ death rates of Covid 19.

MashedPotatoBrainz · 13/04/2020 11:01

Wait until July. If this pandemic is still going then I expect Sweden will have no deaths in July. But the beginning of August will be bad.

Vemvet · 13/04/2020 12:02

Yes! I wish the whole world was taking Sweden's ultra sensible approach 🤞

Lweji · 13/04/2020 14:20

Hmm
Sweden has the same population as Portugal. Less confirmed cases and almost twice the number of dead per million.

KatyMac · 14/04/2020 11:16

Swedish deaths are dropping significantly - I was a bit shocked - my brother (in Stockhom) is very shocked at UK deaths

Sweden have only reported very partial data at weekends as can be seen from the stats for previous weekends, so if you’re basing your assertion on data reported over the Easter weekend and associated holidays, I fear you’re very much mistaken. We’ll have a clear idea by tomorrow of the true position.

LilacTree1 · 14/04/2020 11:23

There’s another thread about this

But yes, we could have taken their approach and I’m very sad that we didn’t.

Derbygerbil · 14/04/2020 11:24

@KatyMac

Take a fortnight ago for instance...

Fri 27th 28 deaths
Sat 28th - 0 deaths
Sun 29th - 5 deaths
Mon 30th - 36 deaths

There’s a clear pattern. It’s not that people in Sweden don’t die at weekends.... They’re just not systematically reported.

KatyMac · 14/04/2020 11:24

I did wonder - he sent me this

Sweden, could we do it the swedish way?
Derbygerbil · 14/04/2020 11:25

But yes, we could have taken their approach and I’m very sad that we didn’t.

It’s too early to say... Give it another week to 10
days and we’ll be able to tell.

KatyMac · 14/04/2020 11:25

& he did ask if I could go visit my mum (1.5 hours away) while both she & our house are on 12 week lockdown Hmm

Derbygerbil · 14/04/2020 13:36

Sadly, it seems I was correct.... Sweden have reported a new 114 deaths. Whereas it’s not dreadful, it indicates that there hasn’t been a drop.

KatyMac · 14/04/2020 13:51

Bugger!

HannahStern · 14/04/2020 17:52

114 deaths is dreadful for Sweden. It's over 11 deaths per million in one day.

It's on a par with deaths in the UK.

LilacTree1 · 14/04/2020 19:17

On a par with the UK - without having suffered the lockdown.

Walkaround · 14/04/2020 19:29

LilacTree1 - except we’ve only been in lockdown for a short time, so death statistics will not be showing the effects of lockdown quite yet, only hospital admissions. We now know that there were around 6,000 more deaths in England and Wales in the week ending 3 April than in any other year at the same time since the ONS started publishing figures in 2005, though - around 16,000 instead of around 10,000. That’s an awful lot more deaths than are being published each day in the figures of people dying of Covid 19 in hospital. It kind of highlights why, in places like Ecuador, they have run out of coffins and people are dumping corpses in the street.

LilacTree1 · 14/04/2020 19:33

Walk- yes.

And the fact remains, Sweden are still being treated more humanely.

If we all end up dead in the street, who has had higher quality of life previously?

Walkaround · 14/04/2020 19:38

If we all end up dead in the street, there’s nobody left to care one way or the other. Do you actually think the UK approach is inhumane, LilacTree? I haven’t read any stories of police beating people up, or people being barricaded into their homes...

Walkaround · 14/04/2020 19:39

We don’t even have to fill out official forms justifying why we have left our homes, and every time someone whinges on social media about the police behaving like jobsworths, the police are forced to apologise.

SpyApp · 14/04/2020 19:41

I wonder whether people's attitudes will change either way when someone they know well has died of it.

ShleeAnKree · 14/04/2020 19:49

Sweden's population about 2.18 Ireland's. Their number of deaths only a bit more than 2.18 by Ireland's deaths. We implemented restrictions really early here. All our gyms, restaurants, cafes etc shut while Sweden's are open. Their low deaths are astonishing imo. I cant understand it.

fascinated · 14/04/2020 19:51

I think Germany has had parties etc and trouble but maybe not quite so many!

LilacTree1 · 14/04/2020 20:19

Walk - I think the fact I can’t see my mum is pretty appalling, yes. I think police behaviour has been dire. I won’t list what I’ve seen again as it’s on other threads.

Spy - mum has lost a friend to Covid and it makes her more stressed that she can’t see her children.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/04/2020 20:29

"Germany record deaths differently. That's literally it."

Rubbish

The RKI (German public health institute) have said that deaths "with" COVID are counted as "from" COVID

Some of the reasons Germany's figures are lower:

. About 3 x as many doctors, ICU beds etc per 100,000 population as the UK

. 500,000 tests per week, which finds more of those infected

. those with positive tests are ordered to stay home and are monitored, serious penalties for leaving

. Any deterioration is treated asap, including early hospital admission
which avoids

fascinated · 14/04/2020 20:33

I’m a bit unclear as to why I cannot see my mum when I have literally been out of the house anywhere other than a rural walk 2-3 times in five weeks . Surely the chances of being infected from the shopping I haVe had delivered are virtually zero. Given that she gets shopping delivered too what is the increased risk to her from me, surely not much?
