Are the clothing sections of supermarkets open?

I haven't been to a supermarket for a month. I need a few essentials, and randomly one child has got holes in socks every day for about 2 weeks. Just debating whether to get the essentials from the local shop or travel to the supermarket and get socks while I'm there. I had read that sone non essential parts of shops were closing.

I ordered three sets of cheapo pyjamas for myself on the basis that if I am caring for me teenage daughter at home, I can, at least change into and out of the clothes at the bedroom door when I go to her. It's half arsed and no doubt delaying the inevitable if one of us gets sick but it seemed like a good idea. Or I can wear them if I get sick.
I would have preferred to go to the supermarket cheapo clothes but to get them but I was fortunate to have a choice.
Not frivolous a purchase.

TheoriginalLEM · 03/04/2020 08:10

Quiet browsing? What does that mean? Fucking touching everything? Taking it off the rails, hold ing it up to yourself? Putting it back? Please somebody tell me they have closed the changing rooms.

Pets at home only allowing purchase if food.

Supermarkets are cashing in

Do your food shop and STAY AT HOME. fuck sake

whitesoxx · 03/04/2020 08:10

"The guiltmingering/ scaremongering does more harm than good"

Scaremongering?! You do know we have a worldwide pandemic don't you?

As for guilt, people need to be double checking and triple checking their actions. People are nipping out for stupid stuff, like a bag of ice cubes. It's a few days until you'll likely decide you need a big shop. That's when you get the ice cubes and the socks.

People aren't sticking to it. And it's getting worse every day

aut0replenish · 03/04/2020 08:14

Picking up socks during a supermarket shop is not nipping out for ice cubes.🙄

Picking up socks in a deserted clothing section is better than ordering so yes guilt/ scaremongering does more harm than good.

IvinghoeBeacon · 03/04/2020 08:18

whitesoxx Your posts do not reflect what the OP is proposing to do at all. You need to double- and triple-check yourself before you go around accusing people of directly causing the death of other people’s husbands.

whitesoxx · 03/04/2020 08:22

"before you go around accusing people of directly causing the death of other people’s husbands."

Right ok, now you're imagining things. I'm leaving the thread behind now cause I've got stuff to do.

The one thing this virus has done is show up the true selfishness and stupidity of people. But yes, "the children are suffering enough" 😂😂

Shitsgettingcrazy · 03/04/2020 08:23

I dont think anyone has told OP to pop put for ONLY socks. Simply that buying socks as part of a bigger shop for food, is fine.

Which it is.

I am sorry the poster lost her husband.

But really, you are going to use someone elses grief to beat people with when they arent doing what you want them to. Despite the fact its perfectly legal.

Wrong on so many levels.

Sparrowlegs248 · 03/04/2020 08:26

Blimey. This escalated after I went to bed. I wasn't asking for mumsnet approval, just if the shops were selling clothes still. I'd hate to get here and find I couldn't get socks. As it is I need pull ups so will be going regardless.

I haven't been to a supermarket for at least a month. I've isolated for 2 weeks, and had a 3rd week (the current week) off work. Child has gone from 15 pairs of socks to 4, plus some odd ones. I hate odd socks, but you know, there's a pandemic happening so I think I'll cope.

Aesopfable · 03/04/2020 08:28

OP is totally unreasonable wanting grab some socks from the supermarket - it is sooo much saver if she went an browsed the haberdashery section instead....

squirrelsbizaar · 03/04/2020 08:31

The op ‘I asked if they were open as I need children's socks, and I won't bother going to a supermarket if they are not open’
That reads like the op is only bothering to go to supermarket if she can buy socks, not like she will pick the up as part of food shopping.
I’m not particuLarly militant about, or that vocal about lockdown on here, or fb. but I agree with what whitesox is is saying, a kid can manage for a few days(weeks) with odd socks, in between food shops and the op shouldn’t be making special trips just to buy them.
And quietly browsing the clothing aisles is not on and clearly different to grabbing a few essentials with your shopping, but everyone thinks they’re special and the rules don’t apply to them until whats happening hits closer to home.

snowballupahill · 03/04/2020 08:33

I choose to do my shop at a large Sainsbury's ( I would normally go to Aldi ) so that I could get the kids some clothes. Their return policy is currently 'no returns'. Do bear in mind that their fitting room was closed so we just had to make a best guess.

MigginsMrs · 03/04/2020 08:35

Fuck off @whitesoxx. You don’t get to police what people get to buy when the shops are still open and selling items. Kids still grow and need clothes.

IvinghoeBeacon · 03/04/2020 08:35

squirrelsbizaar From the OP:

“Just debating whether to get the essentials from the local shop or travel to the supermarket and get socks while I'm there.”

Hope that clarifies for you

amazedmummy · 03/04/2020 08:38

I'd say buy the socks but don't make a separate trip for them. I have a 4 month old who grows incredibly fast as 4 month olds do. When I go out to shop next week I'll need to pick up some bigger clothes. I'll probably aim for sleepsuits and vests because they're easiest at the moment rather than faffing around trying to get outfits sorted. He needs clothes to wear, he has reflux and throws up ok most things and his legs are getting too long for the ones he has. I won't apologise for clothing my child but I'll do it as efficiently as possible.

Sparrowlegs248 · 03/04/2020 08:43

@whitesoxx if you read my post, you will see that I have been to a supermarket for at least a month, and I need to buy some essentials, sone of which I can get at a local shop. So no, socks are not the only reason to go to a shop. As it is I need pull ups for the youngest which the local shop don't sell.

Have a nice day up there on your high horse.

OP posts:
MigginsMrs · 03/04/2020 08:44

Presumably the OP will also buy her essentials when she’s in the supermarket that sells socks?

Or do we now have another made up mumsnet rule that you can’t go to anywhere but your nearest shop to buy essential?

To the lot of you policing what people are doing when they aren’t actually breaking the rules: fuck right off.

ArtisanPopcorn · 03/04/2020 08:45

@whitesoxx you misunderstand me, your posts are the hilarious and terrifying ones.

OP doesn't just need socks but she can get everything else from another shop. If she can get socks at the supermarket she will get the rest of her shop there too.

WanderingMilly · 03/04/2020 08:45

Go ad buy the clothes you need. All the supermarkets are open, those with clothing (and household items) sections are all open. If you need socks you can get them, there is nothing wrong with that.

IvinghoeBeacon · 03/04/2020 08:51

“I'd say buy the socks but don't make a separate trip for them.”

I think the whole point of the thread is to avoid any sort of separate trip! Rather than asking for permission to clothe her child.

ArtisanPopcorn · 03/04/2020 08:51

I'd be very grateful if @whitesoxx could give us a comprehensive list of what is and isn't considered essential. Children's socks is clearly a no.

MigginsMrs · 03/04/2020 08:53

Yes @ArtisanPopcorn and she should also post her own shopping list here so we can check she hasn’t bought anything non essential whatsoever

dottiedodah · 03/04/2020 08:55

I would think clothes for growing children are an essential item! Who on earth has time to darn socks FFS? Obviously this is not the time to buy a whole new summer wardrobe, but some of these comments are beyond idiotic! Supermarket workers have got to work their shift no matter who is buying what surely.

QuimJongUn · 03/04/2020 08:56

If anyone needs baby clothes, post on FB. Skint people who've lost their jobs will snap your hand off to sell you bundles of outgrown baby clothes!

Aside from the obvious risk involved in taking a bag of clothes from a stranger, I'm not sure the police would accept that driving to someone's house to buy stuff is an essential journey.

FFS, in what way is doing that more sensible than grabbing some socks while you're at the supermarket anyway?!

This thread, like so many others lately, is fucking batshit. I'll add socks to the ever increasing list of things I'm not allowed, shall I? Along with chocolate, wine, magazines, Easter eggs, hair dye, and any joy/respite whatsoever.

You do realise that at some point, restrictions will be relaxed and the virus will still be there, don't you? What will you do then? Will socks and chocolate still be off the menu?

IvinghoeBeacon · 03/04/2020 08:56

All the FB selling groups local to me have closed temporarily for that reason

Shitsgettingcrazy · 03/04/2020 09:01

@squirrelsbizaar That reads like the op is only bothering to go to supermarket if she can buy socks, not like she will pick the up as part of food shopping.

Op says she needs pull ups.

Or would prefer her to go round lots of smaller shops hoping she can buy pull ups instead?

Ffs. People are ridiculous. Nowhere did OP say she was just popping out for socks.
