Are the clothing sections of supermarkets open?

I haven't been to a supermarket for a month. I need a few essentials, and randomly one child has got holes in socks every day for about 2 weeks. Just debating whether to get the essentials from the local shop or travel to the supermarket and get socks while I'm there. I had read that sone non essential parts of shops were closing.

OP posts:
Waxonwaxoff0 · 03/04/2020 06:41

I hope the people on this thread berating OP aren't buying any non essential food items either. Things like alcohol, chocolate, Easter eggs for the kids. After all you don't need those and you're taking extra time in the supermarket to get them.

SpudsAreLife84 · 03/04/2020 06:43

wax absolutely spot on!

longearedbat · 03/04/2020 06:48

Oh op, don't you know you shouldn't ask shopping questions on here, as the shopping police are ready and waiting to spout their made up rules and regulations.
If you need socks, buy them when you go shopping. Simple. Don't seek validation from mumsnet; it never ends well.

flameprincess · 03/04/2020 06:56

To the people suggesting Facebook selling groups, I've noticed a lot of self righteous statuses from people recently going around on there condemning people who dare buy and sell on the groups as this is also apparently 'non -essential' - So I certainly wouldn't like to comment on something I needed to buy and have my entire friends list see. This whole thing seems to have become a competitive sport on who can do lockdown the best, and shaming people at any given opportunity.

Shitsgettingcrazy · 03/04/2020 06:58

Oh I definitely will buy Jean's when I am out doing to food shop. I usually get mine from asda anyway, so know which ones I want. Will take me a couple of minutes.

But then committed the ultimate crime, according to the shopping police.....I picked up hair dye while I was shopping earlier this week.

SpudsAreLife84 · 03/04/2020 07:07

Well if it makes you feel better shitsgettingcrazy, I bought mascara.....

ArtisanPopcorn · 03/04/2020 07:15

This thread is both terrifying and hilarious!

HennyPenny4 · 03/04/2020 07:19

Tesco has clothing fortunately, I needed urgent easily on and off clothes for family member with dementia.
M&S has a few things in the food hall now.

daisypond · 03/04/2020 07:24

I wasn’t aware that supermarkets sold any clothing. The ones near me don’t. Unless you count the very random stuff that Lidl sometimes sells. Just buy the socks while you’re there.

daisypond · 03/04/2020 07:25

No, it does sell socks, definitely, I’ve remembered.

aut0replenish · 03/04/2020 07:29

The clothing in my supermarkets are well away from staff. There is literally nobody there. If you order online you could well be putting others at more risk. Pickers, packers and postal workers. Children grow and will need items, definitely use your supermarket. The whole berating if buying non essentials when you’re in a supermarket buying essentials is bonkers and goes way too far.

aut0replenish · 03/04/2020 07:33

I’ll be buying 3 items of shite each for my teens. They haven’t been out of our house bar tedious walks round our local area for 3 weeks. They’re going nuts, can’t come shopping with me and treats to last all week are important to keep moral going. I’ll be buying choc and wine for Dh and I alongside an Easter egg for my mum who is fed up and lonely. Last week I had to order jeans online for one teen who was literally down to one pair. It was no more worthy.

wishing4sun · 03/04/2020 07:38

Sainsbury clothes definitely are I think it's fine if it's just socks you can grab and run with out looking through all the clothes. Just having a general browse and look through NO.

I work for Argos but am currently helping out at Sainsbury's and that doesn't bother me as much as people buying the massive amounts of totally non essentials from Argos.

UntamedWisteria · 03/04/2020 07:41

If the supermarket you choose to visit sells kids clothes, no reason why you shouldn't buy them on your trip (or anything else they sell for that matter).

But you can get all this stuff online too you know - M&S for example.

kingkuta · 03/04/2020 07:41

This thread is both terrifying and hilarious!

Exactly this. Christ, what have I just read.

OP if I didn't need to bother going to a supermarket other than the socks I would avoid and order online, which is exactly what I'm going to do today as dd needs knickers.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 03/04/2020 07:42

Another one who needs underwear here. I was waiting for payday to buy new bras and knickers and then the shops closed. I felt that I couldn’t go and look when I was in the supermarket last week As felt people would be judging me.

But surely by ordering online that’s creating more risk for the workers? Those in warehouses and delivery services? I will need to order bras online but surely picking up a pack of pants or tights (which I need for work as I am a key worker) while doing my food shop is better?

Tfoot75 · 03/04/2020 07:49

Gosh didn't realise my comment about potential quiet browsing would cause such vitriol. Was just comparing the usual disarray and lack of required sizes in my local sainsburys to it now being empty and fully stocked. I didn't actually browse, I went down there to look for some blu tac in the stationery section (shock horror).

whitesoxx · 03/04/2020 07:50

Morning. I agree, it's hilarious and terrifying. Can't even believe I'm involved in a chat about socks. I'm just sick to the back teeth of people making shit up.

Clothing is not an essential reason to leave the house. The OP said that's the only thing she's going for. The rules are clear that in that case she shouldn't go.

Where did I say not to get socks when she goes to do her food shopping? People are dying because you won't all just stay the fuck home and think this doesn't apply to you.

The kid is wearing odd socks for a few days. So fucking what? All your piss taking (amusing as some of it is) has likely persuaded yet another person to break the rules and put others at risk.

As for @PippaPegg you deserve a special mention. Did you really just write that?!! Confused

"Children are having a shitty enough time of it without also being denied socks!"

whitesoxx · 03/04/2020 07:52

Not what you said though is it @Tfoot75 Hmm

And do you know what vitriol means? 😂

bluewafflewithmayo · 03/04/2020 07:54

You should be stitching together old food packaging to wear.

Buying any clothing is MURDER.

Shitsgettingcrazy · 03/04/2020 07:58

Well if it makes you feel bettershitsgettingcrazy, I bought mascara.....

Did you Shane yourself later?

Clothing is not an essential reason to leave the house

Well that depends doesnt it. If it's a dress to go out Friday night, no it's not an essential. But actually lots if clothing is essential.

Given that offers have stopped on food, lots of people are losing money....those planning in spending a fortune on clothes they dont need in asda are going to be few and far between.

I also took it as the OP will chose which supermarket she goes to, based on if she can get clothes or not.

So she may go to aldi, but if asda is open and you can buy socks, she will go there instead.

whitesoxx · 03/04/2020 07:59

Funny isn't it? Just catching up on threads I'm on and I mentioned the one from
last night, the OP lost her husband to it. (But yeah, nip out for fucking socks....won't you think of the children Hmm). For every one of you piss taking, laughing, flouting the rules remember what you did when it hits closer to home.

An ICU nurse posted this on her post:

"As I am currently working in ICU I understand your frustration OP. Every one of our patients is Covid19 +ve. All intubated. Only a small proportion of the 50 are expected to recover. I'm talking less than 5. They are not all old or have underlying health problems. Their families will not be with them when they die. Maybe one member may be allowed. That's not counting those on the ward or in the community.

The peak has yet to happen here. It's heartbreaking already.

So many people still think it's just the flu."

But yeah. God forbid a kid wears odd socks for a few days.

Toastiemaker · 03/04/2020 08:04

I bought some baby sleep suits as dd has outgrown hers. It was at the same time i was doing the weekly shop at the supermarket. The clothes bit was very quiet and I felt.bad being there, like I was doing something wrong! I just grabbed a pack for now but I will get more online as I felt like a criminal purchasing them in the shop... Confused

aut0replenish · 03/04/2020 08:05

It’s not a few days, it’s for weeks. There is zero additional risk to picking up socks during a supermarket shop.

Op has said she’d pick them up whilst doing a supermarket shop instead of the local shop. I am nosey certainly not using our corner shop. I do one shop a week for 6 at our big supermarket. I get all toiletries, prescriptions and food in one big go instead of multiple smaller shops.

The guiltmingering/ scaremongering does more harm than good.

aut0replenish · 03/04/2020 08:06

Most not nosey
