Are the clothing sections of supermarkets open?

I haven't been to a supermarket for a month. I need a few essentials, and randomly one child has got holes in socks every day for about 2 weeks. Just debating whether to get the essentials from the local shop or travel to the supermarket and get socks while I'm there. I had read that sone non essential parts of shops were closing.

OP posts:

TU @ Sainsbury’s and M&S both have online clothing sales ATM.

I’m on complete lockdown so have ordered online. ( I dare say someone will come along to accuse me of murdering couriers or some such but I needed knickers and didn’t fancy knitting my own from used carrier bags.)

Singingatmidnight · 03/04/2020 04:16

M&S have shut the clothing section, but have put some essentials (socks, underwear, baby & children's clothes) in the foodhall. Really good idea, saves us ordering online and combines a journey. (The baby always grows out of her clothes overnight, somehow.)

Thepigeonsarecoming · 03/04/2020 04:17

@arriettyjones but haven’t you heard knickers are non essential? The police and government haven’t said so but mumsnet have probably declared it so. How selfish

ArriettyJones · 03/04/2020 04:17

I would say the risk of taking a bag of clothes from a stranger is greater than the risk of grabbing them from the supermarket right now.

Just wash it all with some napisan or dettol and tumble dry. (If you’re REALLY worried, spray the bag with dilute dettol or antibacterial spray, leave it in the porch/shed/balcony for three days and THEN launder it.)

Honestly, though inanimate objects posted or dropped at the door are much less dangerous than shops with multiple people breathing in them.

I imagine DH would like that law if it came in Grin

Thepigeonsarecoming · 03/04/2020 04:20

I’m sure sex is also a non approved exercise, so no knickers won’t help him 😂

ArriettyJones · 03/04/2020 04:24

Grin It wouldn’t help him anyway.

Thepigeonsarecoming · 03/04/2020 04:27

Poor bloke 😂😂

penberrh · 03/04/2020 04:30

Matalan were still doing online stuff last time I checked OP.

Mummyoflittledragon · 03/04/2020 04:58

I think it’s wrong that supermarkets can still sell a full range of clothes and not M&S... not that I’m in love with the shop since their Mee changing room policy took effect.

I think we are going to have to get used to buying essentials online for the foreseeable future.

JustVisiting9 · 03/04/2020 05:00

If the children need new socks or clothes because they've out grown their current ones, I think this is 'essential shopping'. I see absolutely no harm in putting a pack of socks in the trolley as part of your regular grocery shop but you shouldn't make a special trip just to buy clothes, or spend too long looking at things.

Thepigeonsarecoming · 03/04/2020 05:05

When all clothes are seen as non essential I’m looking forward to your fashion advice! After all why are warehouse staff and online delivery drivers ok to be at risk when it would take less than a minute to pick up in store?

RhymingRabbit3 · 03/04/2020 05:13

I was wondering this too. I've just had a baby so all my pre- pregnancy trousers are too tight and the maternity ones are too big (and have holes in)!

Sparklingbrook · 03/04/2020 05:16

If they are following the advice to stay at home I guess people don't need a whole lot of brand new clothes at this point.

Thepigeonsarecoming · 03/04/2020 05:22

@RhymingRabbit3 if you are already shopping buy them

Toybox88 · 03/04/2020 05:27

I can't believe people are telling you to darn the socks even though clothes sections are open.
Our Tesco has its full clothing section open and fully stocked. Our marks has the essentials mainly kids essentials including socks!

hibeat · 03/04/2020 05:52

Did somebody say darn the socks ? Why not knit them ? The world is getting curiouser and curiouser by the minute. How many seconds to pick a pair of socks in an aisle ?

Inkpaperstars · 03/04/2020 06:00

Since lockdown I have given up proper clothes. Never liked them anyway.

One thing that is essential though is socks.

Shitsgettingcrazy · 03/04/2020 06:14

I am probably going to need some new clothes in a few weeks.

I am dropped weight like no bodies buisness. Jeans are already hanging off me.

I am quite happy to live pjs. But 6 pairs of bottoms arent going to last long and what the fuck do I wear when I do actually have to go shopping in weeks time.

Might see if I have some potato sacks in the house somewhere. Hmm

NothingIsWrong · 03/04/2020 06:24

I have a spinning wheel and am capable of darning socks. I can also knit socks and sew my own clothes. However all that takes an inordinate amount of time and I'm also working full time from home and homeschooling 3 children. I will be buying socks if I need any.

Ferfooksake · 03/04/2020 06:29

If it’s open then it’s obviously ok to buy or it’d be cordoned off

SpudsAreLife84 · 03/04/2020 06:35

Oh for crying out loud, you can get to the clothes bit and grab socks just as quickly as you could get any other item. It will add 30 seconds to her time in the shop!

OP get socks, don't stress. All our local supermarkets are still selling clothes and likewise have offers on.

Do not feel guilty, regardless of some people on here!

Monty27 · 03/04/2020 06:37

Leave OP alone people, if someone needs something for their child and its available then why not procure it?

@whitesoxx clothing is an essential. We don't know how long lockdown is going to last. I can manage without new clothes for myself but kids grow quickly, my DS has gone up a shoe size and I will need to get him some new summer shoes pretty soon. Absolutely nothing wrong with grabbing some clothing items while you're doing a food shop.

SpudsAreLife84 · 03/04/2020 06:41

Agreed whitesoxx, just get some jeans when you go, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that at all!
