The young healthy people who are dying..

Whitefeather01 · 02/04/2020 17:20

Do you think that those who died and were said to have been young, fit and healthy with no underlying health issues, probably did have something underlying but didn't know about it?

Or do healthy people really just die from things like this?

Many of the young people won't be fit like we were when we were young. Their diets will be made up of more processed food and it's unlikely they are as fit as we were in terms of their cardio vascular system, they're far more sedentary.

And the obesity, the pictures of the so called people with no underlying health conditions who are quite obviously obese.

Is this isn't a wake up call for the nation to take more responsibility for their lifestyle choices then I despair.

But it goes for people who control their weight with ridiculous diets, you might be thin but you aren't fit. You need to get off your arse and move.

ripples101 · 02/04/2020 20:28

Oh shut up Mascotte

Mascotte · 02/04/2020 20:31

@ripples001 why? I’m intrigued as to why the world is up in arms about one I’ll read and ignores a much bigger one

UncleBillyLostHisWilly · 02/04/2020 20:31

Yeh, shut up @Mascotte you're ridiculous

Mascotte · 02/04/2020 20:32

One illness

Mascotte · 02/04/2020 20:35

Sort of proves the point

ripples101 · 02/04/2020 20:35

Oh dear lord.

Mascotte. Go away.

DarnedSocks · 02/04/2020 20:38

Being overweight is not always a lifestyle "choice". Lifestyle yes, choice not necessarily.

Mascotte · 02/04/2020 20:42

@ripples101 always good to hear a cogent and informed argument

feelingverylazytoday · 02/04/2020 20:43

Mascotte start a thread about malaria then. This thread is discussing coronavirus. Which incidentally is killing people around the world, not just 'old western men'.

HoffiCoffi13 · 02/04/2020 20:45

As far as I’m aware Mascotte CV19 is killing people of all races.

Mascotte · 02/04/2020 20:45

Ok... I’ll potter off

ripples101 · 02/04/2020 20:48

Mascotte

You can expect a good reply to a good point.

Your point deserves the contempt it has received.

So yes, potter off.

Mascotte · 02/04/2020 20:49

Wow.. the intellect!

Bloomburger · 02/04/2020 20:50

Malaria isn't ignored, there are many organisations and fund raising initiatives, the WHO is pioneering vaccination programmes in 3 high malaria African countries and there are many drives for malaria nets going on all of the time.

the young are thinking they will just get a cold, they will be in for a mighty shock if they end up as one of the 40% that end up with pneumonia.

Confused are you saying 40% of people who get this virus, end up with pneumonia? I don’t think that’s correct.

LizzieSiddal · 02/04/2020 20:53

Also obese people are more likely to have high blood pressure, diabetics or both. I presume that if you have these conditions (often undetected), you’ll be more likely to develop problems with this virus.

Samara77 · 02/04/2020 20:57

I have previously gained a lot of weight in the past from being on certain medications for a neurological condition. Thats wasn't my choice and I was so unwell at the time I was happy just not to be in pain. There are drugs that do slow the metabolism and stimulate your appetite. When I stopped these drugs the weight fell off me.

I don't think anyone is saying that being overweight or obese isn't dangerous if you contract Covid19 but it doesn't help anyone to be all well you should have known better or writing off fat people like their lives don't matter. Lots of fat people are good people who overeat for a variety of reasons including mental health issues, chronic pain and medication.

Body positivity is a thing because studies have shown telling fat people they are bad, ugly or shaming them doesn't lead to weight loss or improved health outcomes it actually makes the problem worse.

I am sure this crisis will make many overweight prople think again and double down on their efforts to lose weight but obesity is a chronic issue and once you're fat it can be hard to reverse. So please try to be kind.

People die suddenly at any age.

A friend of mine passed away in his sleep at 21 yo from sudden adult death. Its like cot death in babies.

Statistically it's very unlikely. But even a 0.01% chance means it can and does happen.

Random18 · 02/04/2020 21:05

I'm fat.

I also seem to get sick a lot less than a lot of other people I know who are thinner.

I know I should be thinner and I am at times.

Obviously I don't know how I would react to CV but I would hope I would fight it the same way I fight every other bug and have very mild symptoms

larrygrylls · 02/04/2020 21:31

Rogue,

That article says it is still an open question.

alloutoffucks · 02/04/2020 23:28

This is about your immune system. Lots of things affect your immune system. Age, general health, sex, and yes regular intensive exercise makes your immune system less strong. Being fat can also have a negative impact on your immune system. But there are so many factors. We all know people who live healthily but seem to catch every cold and virus circulating.

alloutoffucks · 02/04/2020 23:33

@LizzieSiddal I am surprised if these are undetected in fat people. I am fat and my GP insists on taking my blood pressure whatever I go for and has persuaded me a few times to have checks for diabetes, which are always negative. It must only be people who never go near the GP who would not be picked up

wickedgames · 02/04/2020 23:39

I work in an ITU and the majority of our COVID patients are obese. The other common risk factors seem to be hypertension, diabetes, asthma, and heavy smoking.
