From the BBC website.

Words fail me.

And the numbers coming out of China are no doubt hugely downplayed. I don't know why anyone gives them any credence.

VettiyaIruken · 02/04/2020 10:31

If you aren't vegan you may as well eat a dog that's been boiled alive cos there's no difference between humanely killing an animal and subjecting it to a slow and agonising death. Hmm

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 02/04/2020 10:33

@BilboBercow

Criticising Governments that spread lies about cures which will massively increase demand for these 'cures' and increase the suffering of wild animals is not imperialist racist bullshit.

BilboBercow · 02/04/2020 10:33

gingham do you know how we get veal? Or foie gras? Or even how we keep battery hens?

You're not going to get any disagreement from me that this is cruel but there's out and out racism on here. Probably from people who think this pandemic is the result of people eating bats.

SimonJT · 02/04/2020 10:34

I hope none of you eat pork or chicken, if you do you’re just as bad.

SarahTancredi · 02/04/2020 10:37

🙇‍♀️

Most animal products used in things are ensuring that nothing is wasted. That's you can buy bones for your stock or dog.

It doesnt involve torturing an animal for life.

Even peope who eat meat , many still refuse to eat things like frois grais ( sp?) Veal etc.
If you are going to kill an animal for food its only right that it's not for nothing and that it's not tortured daily on purpose.

And yeah I'm.well aware that tbh in alot of cases the living conditions themselves are the torture and personally I think standards should be much much higher than they are.

But there is also a massive difference between farming animals who wouldbt even be there if it wasnt fir the fact they were eventually going to be food.

And trapping and caging and torturing wild animals.

We did hopefully learn the Importabce if being very careful with what we did when we had our own outbreaks such as BSE/CJD.

Wild bears could have all sorts if diseases and viruses. Its irresponsible

Cam77 · 02/04/2020 10:38

Germany is carrying out 10x more tests than the British government which will result in countless lives saved. China took action to lock down early and limited deaths to just over 3,000 saving countless lives. Meanwhile wealthy Britain, a tiny island, could exceed that ten fold due to ministerial incompetence and a perverted sense of priority. But yeah, blah blah China hurting a few bears "what terrible people". Get a grip.

TemoraryUsername · 02/04/2020 10:38

Oh fudge right off @BilboBercow. People are saddened and angry about the increase in animal suffering that is a direct result of something that likely doesn't even work.

chatwoo · 02/04/2020 10:38

@Froq they don't eat Koalas. That was something that appeared in the media but the Chinese word doesn't mean the same as the the English word when translated. Apparently it's a tree rat Sad

Mamamia456 · 02/04/2020 10:39

Simonjt - I always buy free range chicken and either free range or organic eggs. I buy pork that is from pigs that have been outdoor reared.

SensitiveLittleBlossom · 02/04/2020 10:39

The real figure for the deaths in China is 42,000.

ncagainforfeb · 02/04/2020 10:40

China took action to lock down early and limited deaths to just over 3,000 saving countless lives.

And you actually believe that?

SimonJT · 02/04/2020 10:41

@Mamamia456 What about all the male chics, free range ones are ‘dealt with’ in the same way as barn raised.

ShanghaiDiva · 02/04/2020 10:43

They took tough action and that saved lives. There is no doubt about that.

cinammonbuns · 02/04/2020 10:43

I wonder how many people on this thread eta factory farmed animals.

I want one person to try and explain to me how his is any different without being a hypocrite.

cinammonbuns · 02/04/2020 10:44

@VettiyaIruken imagine thinking factory farmed animals are killed humanely. Words fail me.

Kitchendoctor · 02/04/2020 10:45

You’d be surprised about how many drugs in the western world contain animal derived ingredients. The first that springs to mind is a treatment for stroke patients derived from bat saliva.

cinammonbuns · 02/04/2020 10:46

@SarahTancredi there is actually no difference at all. Animals like cows and pigs used to be ‘wild’ then humans wanted to eat them so they were farmed and raised for meat.

I am just as disgusted about farming bears as anyone on here but I am equally disgusted about factory farming cows and pigs.

There is absolutely no difference.

The only reason pigs and cows aren’t endangered is because humans mass farm them for food. If they are still ‘wild’ they would be endangered just like bears are.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 02/04/2020 10:46

Fuck this.

Look up how it's collected and then tell me it's not torture.

There need to be sanctions for this.

And they still insist on animal testing for cosmetics.

cinammonbuns · 02/04/2020 10:48

@ChardonnaysPetDragon agreed! just like there needs to be sanctions on factory farmed animals which are regularly tortured in uk farms.

LastTrainEast · 02/04/2020 10:48

Froq we do battery hens etc so we can hardly claim the moral high ground there.

PepePig · 02/04/2020 10:49

Horrendous. There will be another pandemic in 10 years time for sure. They've learnt absolutely nothing.
