I was so sad after going to the supermarket today

I left my flat for the first time in 2 weeks. I live alone in a 2nd floor flat. I was quite happy on my own here in solitude! . I only went out because I had to pick up a prescription from the chemist. I don't eat much so food isn't really an issue for me. I just thought it would be okay to pop in to Lidl to get a couple of things...non essential.....including wine, cider, crunchy nut cornflakes, mars bars, broccoli, eggs.

I was literally 'Marked' by another customer who was making a song and dance about the 2 metres thing. It was not possible to do it in Lidl today!! People were being careful ....but it was not possible.

This guy (with his latex gloves and his stupid flimsy amazon mask ) made me feel so shit about myself.

I've stayed home for 2 weeks with zero human interaction I've never felt so calm and relaxed. Go out for the first time and immediately humans piss me right off.

People keep saying that is humans are sociable animals and we are not designed for isolation.

Well f@@k me I must be some kind of alien or something. I've been happy as Larry on my own for 2 weeks...one trip to Lidl, having to interact with other humans and I feel so low and sad!!

Surely there are other solitary human creatures like me out there?!

I went to asda for the first time since we went into lockdown, hated it

I was ok in the queue but i found the shopping inside very stressful, most people were attempting the 2m thing but it was very difficult

I don’t think there was even 2m between the shelves so in theory there were aisles that i wouldn't have been able to walk down If there were other people in it. I obviously went past people quickly and as far away as possible, and made sure i was 2 m away if i wanted a particular shelf

I did balls up the one way system that I didn’t realise was in place

We did click and collect but I needed to go in for what was ‘missing’ so although i did have a fairly full small trolley part of it was stuff i saw or realised we didnt have ...it may have looked nonessential

naughtycat · 02/04/2020 10:02

Someone asked what did he do to make me feel inferior?!

Well, he could have followed anyone around the store to kindly teach them the 2 meter rule...but he decided to follow me! Every time I stopped to look at stuff on a shelf, he waited impatiently for me to decide what to put in my basket and move on, before he would step forward. This sounds reasonable maybe, but everyone else in the shop was going about their business and not doing this. He was making a point about the 2 meter rule. But why me? Why did he decide I would be the one to receive his teaching?!!

I hate going shopping now and people judging every feckin thing is doing my head in. Cant go out for this, can't go out for that - look at your own behaviour before judging others. If you've not been out for a while its weird - I went out after about a week and had to consciously look at the floor markings as no clue what they were at first.

Nearlyalmost50 · 02/04/2020 10:12

Where did this not buying non-essentials thing come from? I went shopping yesterday and took two trollies! I won't go out again for a week to 10 days, and so the amount of milk, cereal stuff like that was huge, and I also bought lots of yummy food like yoghurts, a couple of desserts, fruit juice so we don't all murder each other whilst indoors. There isn't a list of essential food lol!

The point of the exercise is to get you to go infrequently to the shops, with as much social distancing once in the shop as possible. Getting a large shop infrequently does that.

I buy the normal shop, including enjoyable food, whilst I'm there. I haven't seen either guidance or laws to say otherwise.

TheLadyAnneNeville · 02/04/2020 10:13

Hey @naughtycat... that person was ignorant. Let it go. I was in Home Bargains last week. Everyone was using the black floor markings at the til area, apart from some Neanderthal type, behind me. He just walked forward before I’d even finished packing and said “two bags mate” to the cashier. We were literally touching shoulders. Hoping he either drops dead or gets arrested before he can endanger others. I, like you, was SO annoyed. I’m following the rules fastidiously as I have 2 vulnerable people at home.

This is making me realise how shitty people can be and just makes me want to hibernate anyway.

Hope you’re ok, OP.

MigginsMrs · 02/04/2020 10:16

And in case you hadn't realised, we are in lockdown which means not shopping for non essential items

Not this shite again. No it doesn’t. “Basic necessities such as food or medicines”. Not “essential items only”.

Kuponut · 02/04/2020 10:27

DH did the weekly shop this morning and also bought a birthday cake, cards and Harry Potter onesie (plus lots of chocolate which I deem essential for my personal sanity). Was done on a normal general shopping trip - and fuck it, it's my little girl's birthday this week, it's going to be crap enough away from her adored grandparents and school friends, and she's not doing without cake and cards.

The basket police can fuck off - essential shopping means "don't go at 9am for a Twix, then pop back to Asda at 11 for a Snickers and a Daily Mail, then decide you need to go back out for something different for tea" - not "thou must only buy gruel and one crinkly hard school loo roll"

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 02/04/2020 10:28

I have been avoiding Lidl and Tesco, and been to Waitrose and M&S (Shock) as there is a strict one-in one-out policy, so yes you have to queue to get in, but once in all is calm and civilised and only about 2 people per aisle

A bit more £££ than I am used to

But I see that as investing in my mental health, does that sound ridiculous? Blush

TheLadyAnneNeville · 02/04/2020 10:31

@Kuponut 😂😂😂. Well said. I agree. All these curtain twitching basket police can get to fuck!

LaurieMarlow · 02/04/2020 10:41

And in case you hadn't realised, we are in lockdown which means not shopping for non essential items

Oh ffs, this is getting ridiculous.

We've little enough at the minute to cheer us and keep our mood up. If the OP wants to buy some wine and crunchy nut cornflakes, what kind of douchebag do you have to be to condemn this?

We need to be thinking about people's well being and mental health at the minute too. Otherwise we are shoring up enormous problems for ourselves on top of CV.

Roussette · 02/04/2020 10:42

Before I say what I'm going to say I have to add... I think the supermarket workers are doing a grand job, the majority of them that is.

But...
It has brought the jobsworth out in some of them. At my last shop about 10 days ago, it was the first time I'd been since markings on the floor and queueing to get in, and queueing to go to a checkout on your own etc.

So I stood in the wrong place to pay. I hadn't been before, didn't know where to go. Supermarket worker was holding a big stick with something on it, no idea what, and sent me up and down an aisle to stand at the end of the queue

When I got there, she waved her stick and shouted at me to stand in the middle of the aisle and not browse. WTAF?!

I shop
I keep the advised distance and am careful
I feel no guilt about buying non essential items - I bought 3 Easter eggs yesterday, beer, plants and a cashmere jumper. All in the same shop which is very strict on customer numbers in the shop

I think that your shopping sounds essential (egg, brocolli, cornflakes) so the person scolding you for leaving your house first time in a fortnight is nuts.

Hope you don't have to go shopping for a while.

HaddawayAndShite · 02/04/2020 10:52

Urgh this is why I don't want to go do a shop even though we have now run out of most fresh things and only have mince in the freezer. Heaven forbid I pick up some crisps and get some dog breathed arsehole screaming "that's not an essential item' 2m away from me.

Were you self isolating for a reason?
Please point out where it states she was self isolating? We've not left the house since the day before the lockdown, we're not self isolating but just don't feel the need to leave the house.

Even if you were, what exactly is 'stupid' about gloves and masks?
They don't offer protection. Masks don't stop you contracting anything and gloves give you a false sense of protection. I'd assume you we're pissed when you posted that given the time and your lack of basic judgement.

SeeWhoRustsFirst · 02/04/2020 10:52

I hear you OP. Was perfectly happy here and went shopping and came back feeling like shit. Exactly the same experience as you but also someone stacking shelves shouted across the aisle to tell me off for picking something up and putting it back on the shelf (I needed to check the allergen information and it turned out I couldn't have it so had to put it back). I assume this isn't actually store policy that you can't touch but still made me feel like shit in front of everyone else shopping there... think I'd rather just live on oats and water next week rather than go again.. but for DD's sake I guess I'll have to go. We can do this OP!

bigknickersbigknockers · 02/04/2020 10:52

worra I hope you are living on your own and not making any one else miserable.

koshkatt · 02/04/2020 10:54

I love being away from other people too OP - most people are just idiots and I love my own company! I genuinely do not understand all the people upset at being made to stay at home. There is nowhere else I would rather be.

Deux · 02/04/2020 11:00

I went to my nearest supermarket last night at 9.30pm to buy non essentials according to the shopping police. It was pretty deserted. I did end up buying all sorts of other things.

It’s not like someone caught Coronavirus each time I put something in my basket. Oh and I took DD with me. Get out the smelling salts.

kiki22 · 02/04/2020 11:01

Marpan · 02/04/2020 11:05

“In his stupid amazon mask”

It’s pretty mean and ignorant, people wearing masks and gloves are scared, that’s why they are wearing them. Getting asked to stand 2 metres away - why were you not already.

You don’t know who has a health condition or who knows someone who has just suffocated to death all alone.

corythatwas · 02/04/2020 11:09

Masks don't stop you contracting anything and gloves give you a false sense of protection.

Surely the whole point of masks and gloves is protecting other people. If you are wearing a mask there is less risk of exhaling germs. If you are wearing disposable gloves you will not be passing on germs that stay alive on the fat of your skin.

Some people seem to feel anything is stupid if there isn't an advantage to themselves. In a pandemic any measure that stops spread to anyone is helping to keep everyone safe.
