I was so sad after going to the supermarket today

I left my flat for the first time in 2 weeks. I live alone in a 2nd floor flat. I was quite happy on my own here in solitude! . I only went out because I had to pick up a prescription from the chemist. I don't eat much so food isn't really an issue for me. I just thought it would be okay to pop in to Lidl to get a couple of things...non essential.....including wine, cider, crunchy nut cornflakes, mars bars, broccoli, eggs.

I was literally 'Marked' by another customer who was making a song and dance about the 2 metres thing. It was not possible to do it in Lidl today!! People were being careful ....but it was not possible.

This guy (with his latex gloves and his stupid flimsy amazon mask ) made me feel so shit about myself.

I've stayed home for 2 weeks with zero human interaction I've never felt so calm and relaxed. Go out for the first time and immediately humans piss me right off.

People keep saying that is humans are sociable animals and we are not designed for isolation.

Well f@@k me I must be some kind of alien or something. I've been happy as Larry on my own for 2 weeks...one trip to Lidl, having to interact with other humans and I feel so low and sad!!

Surely there are other solitary human creatures like me out there?!

Do people think Covid19 is attracted to chocolate or something? Grin

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 02/04/2020 08:02

Personally I think wine and crunchy nut cornflakes are critical to get through times like these! And if they aren't WTF are shops selling them instead of making room for more pasta?

OP that guy was an idiot it sounds like you're doing your best. He was a knobber. I'm so sick of self elected lockdown police.

I'm queuing for Aldi and I'm going to buy chocolate and nuts. Right piss taker, me Grin

EggysMom · 02/04/2020 08:02

Tesco yesterday, couples (presumably same household) shopping together. One stood with the trolley to one side of the aisle, whilst the other was on the opposite side of the aisle looking at the options to get. They didn't need to socially distance themselves but there was a whole aisle-width between them ... which I then had to walk through to get past. Angry At least stand on the same damn side!!

oldmum22 · 02/04/2020 08:02

OP please don't worry, some people do feel the need to be superior, hence your man in Lidl . Buy what is going to make you happy and also the nutritious stuff. Wine, chocolate, fruit and veg, get what you need and get home safely . Big hugs ….virtual obviously

Ginfordinner · 02/04/2020 08:02

Think you chose wrong supermarket lots of praise locally for Waitrose

I think so as well. I shopped in a huge Sainsburys last Friday, and it was all very civilised and polite. Ditto in a nearby Co-op, which seems to be the only shop in the area that gets regular toilet roll deliveries.

That sounds very difficult for you daisypond. That isn't "forgetting" to eat though. Do you live in a highly populated area? We are rural and have had no difficulty buying everything we need. The only shortages I have come across are loo rolls, flour, pasta, rice and yeast. While there is no flour and yeast there has been plenty of bread everywhere, and fresh pasta in the chiller cabinets.

DD brought back loo rolls and a huge bag of pasta from university, so I haven't needed to buy either for a while

EggysMom · 02/04/2020 08:03

For anybody with children, alcohol is an essential.

Lordfrontpaw · 02/04/2020 08:05

I bought some plants In the supermarket to cheer up the balcony - I felt like I’d done a drug deal and scurried home, wondering if I’d get stopped by the police and asked about my stash!

Sunshineafterrain24 · 02/04/2020 08:07

I haven't left the house for over two weeks, but I know through social media that this seems to be a time for people being truly horrible to others. It's like walking on egg shells. Anything you say can be misinterpreted and people snap so easily.
I'm not sure why it has to be like this as we are all in this together and I'm sure everyone is doing their absolute best in this crazy situation.

bellinisurge · 02/04/2020 08:12

Op, some people are getting through this by being arses with other people. It's horrible to be on tbe receiving end of it.

EllaAlright · 02/04/2020 08:25

Op, you didn’t do anything wrong. Covid is bringing out the twat in people. And no one gets to decide wether what you put in your basket or trolley is worthy of going to the supermarket.

Just on a side not, I’ve found going to Aldi at late afternoon is the best time here. The one near me, everyone is practicing appropriate social distancing, and are really mindful of others.

deydododatdodontdeydo · 02/04/2020 08:28

I don't think the guy did anything wrong. You're supposed to keep 2m apart so he was doing that.
And so what if he wore gloves and a mask, some people do.
How was he being an arsehole?
Equally, you were fine to go shopping, but YABU for criticising people for trying to stay 2m apart (even if it's difficult).
He certainly wasn't as bad as the woman screaming at people.

dogsdinnerlady · 02/04/2020 08:30

Eggys.. I went to Waitrose yesterday with DP (to help carry all the wine, choc and non-essentials I planned to buy) and there was no queue to get in. Then we were told by the man on the door that we had to stay 2m apart while doing our shopping, despite the fact that we live together!

LizzieSiddal · 02/04/2020 08:32

OP I went out shopping on Saturday- was kind of looking forward to “getting out”, but it ended up depressing me and not wanting to go out again.
I think the reality hits when you’re outside your own home, the enormity of what’s going on is difficult to process and scary.x

EvilPea · 02/04/2020 08:32

You went to the wrong supermarket. You need a Sainsbury’s or Waitrose.
It’s odd out there, really odd. It’s like no one is allowed to talk to each other.

Tonyaster · 02/04/2020 08:34

Wearing gloves and a mask is fine. Not able to observe the 2m rule is not fine.

Tonyaster · 02/04/2020 08:35

dogsdinnerlady not allowed into my waitrose as a couple. Good!

Betty1233 · 02/04/2020 08:35

People can be really silly. This young guy ran into the road to get away from me, very nearly got run over !

Tonyaster · 02/04/2020 08:37

OP please don't worry, some people do feel the need to be superior, hence your man in Lidl

What the fuck did he do to make the OP feel inferior? He was wearing a mask literally to prevent the OP getting infected!

poppym12 · 02/04/2020 08:42

I've had to go out for things like bread and milk as obviously my usual ocado orders are affected. If shopping for essential items where is the line drawn on what else you can buy whilst you're there?

I'm being as careful as I can, I have COPD (caused by pneumonia 30 bloody years ago) and asthma but if I've got a basket with shopping basics in it, I'll throw whatever else I want in there too if it's readily available. Our co op yesterday had loads of red velvet cakes and twix cookies so it would have been rude not to Grin.

MeganBacon · 02/04/2020 08:43

I get it. I haven't been to a supermarket in over two weeks and am feeling far calmer inside. I am planning a big shop, alone, maybe next Monday for our family of three, when I hope to buy enough stuff to last another 2 or 3 weeks, and that will include chocolate and digestives if it's available in that supermarket. It doesn't matter what I choose to buy, I will have minimised exposure by going as infrequently as possible, to one shop only, alone, as instructed.

Tonyaster · 02/04/2020 08:44

Someone tutted at me yesterday as I unloaded three Easter eggs onto the belt (with all my other shopping). I asked her if she wouldn't mind if I judged her shopping and that her ready meals looked disgusting and unhealthy.

longearedbat · 02/04/2020 08:52

Aargh! I hate these threads. I haven't thought about crunchy nut cornflakes for ages, now I want some! A thread yesterday about the rights and wrongs of buying chocolate (basket police again) actually had me breaking into an easter egg I had bought for my h.
Op, I get you absolutely. I am generally rather solitary and anti social, and I feel very unpressured at the moment, and can concentrate on one thing at a time as I don't have to worry about, or factor in, being somewhere else/meeting up with someone. I don't know if that feeling will continue though.

idiosyncrasiesrule · 02/04/2020 08:52

As every non-baker in the entire country has now decided to start using all the flour.... Buying my chocolate hobnobs has now become essential! And whilst I am at it... I am going to treat myself to some custard creams and maybe even a party ring because I am not a judgy martyr.

Yes. I do consider biscuits to be part of my balanced diet. They bring me joy!

No. I don't care if you don't agree if biscuits are essential. Poke your self riteous indignation up your floured ar$e.

shinynewapple2020 · 02/04/2020 08:53

TBH other shoppers who blithely walk along with no thought to the 2m spacing really piss me off so I would have glares at you too.

Whattheduck · 02/04/2020 08:54

@naughtycat
I felt exactly the same after self isolating for 2 weeks due to my dd being poorly I ventured out for the first time yesterday to my local Sainsbury’s.It was fine no queues to get in quiet once inside compared to normal but some of the people in there had no consideration for anyone else and certainly weren’t distancing themselves from other shoppers.
I purchased socks yesterday as I desperately needed some and a muffin tray oh and a couple of bottles of wine as I’m back at work today (NHS) so I might need a glass or two tonight
