I was so sad after going to the supermarket today

I left my flat for the first time in 2 weeks. I live alone in a 2nd floor flat. I was quite happy on my own here in solitude! . I only went out because I had to pick up a prescription from the chemist. I don't eat much so food isn't really an issue for me. I just thought it would be okay to pop in to Lidl to get a couple of things...non essential.....including wine, cider, crunchy nut cornflakes, mars bars, broccoli, eggs.

I was literally 'Marked' by another customer who was making a song and dance about the 2 metres thing. It was not possible to do it in Lidl today!! People were being careful ....but it was not possible.

This guy (with his latex gloves and his stupid flimsy amazon mask ) made me feel so shit about myself.

I've stayed home for 2 weeks with zero human interaction I've never felt so calm and relaxed. Go out for the first time and immediately humans piss me right off.

People keep saying that is humans are sociable animals and we are not designed for isolation.

Well f@@k me I must be some kind of alien or something. I've been happy as Larry on my own for 2 weeks...one trip to Lidl, having to interact with other humans and I feel so low and sad!!

Surely there are other solitary human creatures like me out there?!

Luckily I make a fair amount of our bread so I have a few bags of flour and yeast at home. In the shop there is only pasta flour and pancake mix!

QualityFeet · 02/04/2020 08:56

I want crunchy nut cornflakes too-they might help my slight hangover.

McCanne · 02/04/2020 08:57

It’s depressing going into the supermarket and people are unable to follow the arrows put down to facilitate decent distancing.

Are people actually policing others shopping trolleys? Wow, that is petty. I didn’t go to the supermarket for anything specific, we just needed food in general. I didn’t realise there was a list of approved items. I can’t think WHY that would even be a thing. Who cares if someone buys Easter eggs? It’s almost Easter, not war.

Clutterbugsmum · 02/04/2020 08:57

The trouble is everyone's list of essential items are different for every family, and the amount needed and that's why we have not been given a list of what we can buy.

For me tea is essential, while wine is not because I don't drink but that doesn't mean I expect everyone else not to buy it.

OP don't apologise for buying what you needed be that wine and flowers if that makes you life happier in this horrible time.

stairgates · 02/04/2020 08:57

Some vile people are loving being able to release their ugly side in public with what they now see as justification, enjoy being back indoors, its not just you getting it, it is happening to everybody and I sadly and others are learning some unpleasant lessons about the nature of people from it, take care x

Billben · 02/04/2020 09:02

And in case you hadn't realised, we are in lockdown which means not shopping for non essential items confused

Can you post your latest shopping list for us please. Let’s have a look if others would consider the same things as “essential” as you do 🙄

TheVanguardSix · 02/04/2020 09:02

Worra come on now. No need to get all Third Reichy on us.
Burn your books in your own back yard. The OP's done nothing wrong here.

This!

Let's see it, then.

Roussette · 02/04/2020 09:04

Bollocks to this. I'll buy what I want when I dare to go out. Haven't been to a supermarket for 10 days and hoping they have some daffodils when I go because they make me happy.

Who do people think they are saying what you can or can't buy? I presume this has affected their brains.

I agree people should go as infrequently as possible but don't tell me you can't buy what you want when you get there.

I keep my distance but some pppl are idiots. I want some fruit gums. I wait while a couple deliberate whether to have toffees or bonbons. They know I am waiting. Five minutes later, I am still waiting. FFS choose your fecking sweets and move on! So tempted to move towards them.

Snorkelface · 02/04/2020 09:06

What the government says........

"shopping for basic necessities, for example food and medicine, which must be as infrequent as possible"

Food - it's one example of a basic necessity, what type or amount of food or what it costs is not defined in any way whatsoever. Once you're in the shop buy what you like, buy what's on the shelves. Supermarkets have already slimmed down their ranges to streamline production under government guidance, it's there to be bought not just for decoration.

While alcohol may not be considered 'food', off-licenses have been classified as essential shops to remain open, including those inside breweries - so not just off licences which are small convenience stores where wine can accidentally fall into your basket.

It's about how often you go out and staying away from each other. Few and far between - that's it.

Franticbutterfly · 02/04/2020 09:07

I just got my usual stuff at the supermarket, I even picked up some Air Pods for my DDs birthday from the instore Argos. If I'm in the shops I'm going to buy everything I want to buy, but I won't go back there for a week or two now, and I stayed out it the shops for two weeks prior to my last shop.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 02/04/2020 09:16

LordfrontPaw
I really wanted to get plants while at Aldi earlier but had to prioritise what I could carry as I walked.

Gutted Confused

lynsey91 · 02/04/2020 09:20

I am self isolating with DH which is great. Perfectly happy. I think I would be fairly happy on my own.

I am not that keen on other people. They always seem to want to get so close to you. The ones that behind you in a queue almost touching you and you can feel their breath on your neck really piss me off. Hardly anyone seems to understand personal space

idiosyncrasiesrule · 02/04/2020 09:26

I fully intend to use the giant water butt from Aldis as a natural 2metre boundary later. Nothing is more important or essential than water.

Davespecifico · 02/04/2020 09:35

Why, once you’re in the supermarket, must essentials only go in your trolley? I understand that it’s not necessary to buy a lot of what other people might need but why restrict yourself otherwise?

I went for my weekly shop to Lidl yesterday. There was a box of fennel. They looked nice and I put one fennel bulb in my trolley.Should I and every other shopper have made sure not to touch it because it’s not essential?

Roxymoomoo · 02/04/2020 09:36

Oh i just went jogging and a couple instead of just walking past at 2 meters stopped right in the entrance to my road and turned their back on me. I then had to jog a big loop around them with their backs turned to me Made me feel like poo too.

Ive been walking or jogging past people being sure i still smile.

Davespecifico · 02/04/2020 09:41

The anti joggers could have been a bit more subtle in their disdain. That said, I’m nervous of joggers a the moment. It’s the speed and heavy breathing. It’s difficult to dodge quickly enough sometimes.

Magic2020 · 02/04/2020 09:43

We may be having to do this for months - if someone needs groceries (including chocolate, wine, Easter eggs or anything else to make life better) it would be much better if they could get those things without judgement - this is all stressful enough without that!

It goes without saying though that trips should be kept to a minimum, and people should use precautions - catch any coughs and sneezes in a clean tissue which gets thrown away safely asap, keep as much of a distance from people as possible, and try to find quieter times to go if possible.

Aubrystrawberry · 02/04/2020 09:48

Not going to be a popular opinion but everyone seems to be judging others and being rude.

Slagging of parents for taking kids in shops .... Yet try and find a home delivery.

Moaning at families for walking in the country.

Moaning about people driving to walk a dog in a peaceful place.

Moaning about aisles in shops less than two meters apart. Well let's use commen sense. If we are healthy and not coughing etc. If we don't chat to people and cough and sneeze then according to WHO 1 meter apart is ok.

I am sick of people taking photos and shaming people online. I'm sick of people taking photos of people in lines outside places. Will prove seriously stop taking photos and being weird.

I'm sorry your experience wasn't great. We hopefully won't need to go in a shop for 3 weeks. We get milk delivered and I've managed to get an Asda shop for the 13th. Saying that Asda are making it as hard as possible. Sending lists of stuff in your basket out if stock. Now they have decided you can only amend the basket 2 days before it arrives.

gingersausage · 02/04/2020 09:49

I think someone should do a study into how this amazingly intelligent virus knows whether you are buying chocolate or bread, and then only decides to infect the people who buy the WRONG things (as decreed by a random on MN).

rayoflightboy · 02/04/2020 09:51

And in case you hadn't realised, we are in lockdown which means not shopping for non essential items

And in case you didnt know @WorraLiberty people are allowed to buy whatever the shops are selling. You dont get to decide whats essential.

I hate the policing going on at the minute.Everyones mental health is taking a bash, you dont need to come on here and get faceless people taking a pop at you.

FreakStar · 02/04/2020 09:52

@WorraLiberty So what should OP have bought in Lidl? Are we to eat like peasants in order to survive this thing?

Are there really people taking 'essentials' to it's literal meaning?

It's about the frequency of your shopping, not what you actually buy when you do go shopping that's important!

Franticbutterfly · 02/04/2020 09:53

There aren't any rules about what you can and cannot buy at the supermarket...why do people think that there is?

One thing I was concerned about though is that there was a huge shelf full of reduced mince with yesterday's date on, I said to the staff does the maximum of 3 rule apply to these items (as obviously they were destined for the bin not long after) and she said "yes, only 3 items will scan". I thought that was sad, and it was a lot to go to waste.

BlipBlopBloop · 02/04/2020 09:55

You got cereal, broccoli and eggs, I’d consider your shop a mixture of essentials and non-essentials. Some people won’t be happy until everyone is eating plain rice, nothing to entertain them and entirely miserable. I’d of just been tempted to cough on the idiot if they’re going to be such a tw*t, it’d wind them up no end if they were being so ridiculous about other people’s shopping, I’m sure I’ll get jumped on for saying that though.

Rachie1973 · 02/04/2020 09:55

I went shopping yesterday, first time in a few weeks. Straight off a 25 hour shift as a support worker so allowed to use the key worker slot.

It was peaceful but I felt awful walking past the queues outside ;(

I also bought all my essentials, but then I saw pringles and hot cross buns, and chocolate and coco pops and a myriad of other crap lol including some wine. So I got that too lol. Oh also picked up a couple a DVDs and a book so probably non essential but fun for me.

I’m bored. I work and sleep work and sleep. I’m fed up of seeing no one and going nowhere except work so I fully plan on utilising my non essentials to amuse myself.
