I was so sad after going to the supermarket today

I left my flat for the first time in 2 weeks. I live alone in a 2nd floor flat. I was quite happy on my own here in solitude! . I only went out because I had to pick up a prescription from the chemist. I don't eat much so food isn't really an issue for me. I just thought it would be okay to pop in to Lidl to get a couple of things...non essential.....including wine, cider, crunchy nut cornflakes, mars bars, broccoli, eggs.

I was literally 'Marked' by another customer who was making a song and dance about the 2 metres thing. It was not possible to do it in Lidl today!! People were being careful ....but it was not possible.

This guy (with his latex gloves and his stupid flimsy amazon mask ) made me feel so shit about myself.

I've stayed home for 2 weeks with zero human interaction I've never felt so calm and relaxed. Go out for the first time and immediately humans piss me right off.

People keep saying that is humans are sociable animals and we are not designed for isolation.

Well f@@k me I must be some kind of alien or something. I've been happy as Larry on my own for 2 weeks...one trip to Lidl, having to interact with other humans and I feel so low and sad!!

Surely there are other solitary human creatures like me out there?!

I was literally 'Marked' by another customer

What does this mean exactly? What did he say/do?

Well, if my cats are owt to go by, OP will have been treated to a good spraying, before he waggled his tail around for all to admire, and wandered off looking all superior.

Lynda07 · 02/04/2020 01:57

That's rotten, naughtycat. Honestly, some people have taken to being amateur police at this time. Don't let it stop you going out again if you need to, not everyone is like that woman.

SapphireSeptember · 02/04/2020 01:57

Love you sapphire 😁 hey, why don't we do our best to be happy and enjoy chocolate cakes flowers and wine ...and whatever you personally like...in these trying times

I agree OP. My thing is trains, I live near the East Coast Mainline and I said to someone if things get so bad the trains stop running then I'll go to pieces because not being able to hear them will be the last straw.

HarrietThePi · 02/04/2020 01:59

If I didn't have a partner at home, I'd be loving this time too op.

naughtycat · 02/04/2020 02:00

Aww bowerbird, thank you for your very understanding and sensitive post. I wish both you and your friend happy shopping times. It's really shit if, like me , your not a confident person anyway...and suddenly you feel like you have to justify everything your buying!

Don't be alarmed by me not eating much! I have a tiny appetite and I sometimes forget to eat! I have to schedule in one meal a day, otherwise I forget (not an ED)! So literally food lasts me ages.

And no, I'm not self isolating for any official reason. I just love being on my own on this little cocoon

OP posts:
Inkpaperstars · 02/04/2020 02:11

Well, obviously anything currently on sale in the supermarkets qualifies as part of your essential shop. Shops the govt classes as non essential have been closed. The govt are in close communication with the supermarkets and if there were things they did not consider appropriate to be purchased right now, they would not be out on the shelves surely?

OP hardly sounds like the kind of person lingering too long in the shop does she? Quite the opposite.

HeIenaDove · 02/04/2020 02:16

OP check your e mails Im going to tag you into a thread that you need right now. Smile

Imstillskanking · 02/04/2020 02:19

Everyone who can self isolate absolutely should. Not sure why people are questioning OP on that. And who cares if she was buying mars bars? She went to the shop to get food. We need food to live. If she also happens to pick up some food that tastes nice, as well as her government sanctioned dust flavoured gruel which can feed a family of 4 for 6 weeks, then so what? If you aren't supposed to buy mars bars and cornflakes then maybe the shops should stop selling them.

Fed up of the shopping basket police on here.

BatShite · 02/04/2020 02:21

what ARE people allowed to buy? Tea and coffee isn't essential, drink water. We only really need a couple of varieties of fruit and vegetables and perhaps potatoes, beans, pasta and pork /quorn? That should be enough to keep us all alive. Shops should just throw any drinks, any confectionary, any desserts into lockup / the bin. No yoghurt etc, perhaps some mild cheese for calcium. So milk is perhaps the only permissable liquid to purchase. All books, dvds, toys also to be removed from the aisle.

Quite. People will have different interpretations of essential. As an example, marsbars are a staple in our house. The reason for this is because DH takes huge dizzy turns which only large doses of sugar can sort out, so he will eat one or two then be ok usually. Oddly, tests negative for diabetes though and doctors refuse to test for anything else that might cause it as apparently eating a few bars of chocolate at a time, every few days is fine..I agree the chclate is fine. I do not agree that the underlying problem should be ignored though, it might be something easily fixed..(easier fixed than stuffing 2 marsbars in yur mouth anyway!)

Some would see me with marsbars and tut. I don't particularly care, but policing others shopping habits (or the newer version 'my neighbour has taken the dog out TWICE today, should I report her?!) is getting a bit much really. Can tell people are getting very bored..

naughtycat · 02/04/2020 03:37

I'm feeling really happy. Only just going to bed now. I've drank some lovely wine, while eating (far to many) MarsBars, while gazing at my beautiful new house plant and my fresh flowers. Looking forward to my crunchy nut cornflakes and Lidl orange juice in the morning.

In peace with no other humans bugging me
SmileSmile

I will pray for all those fighting for their rights in Lidl, Aldi, and Sainsbury's tomorrow.

We're not on lockdown where I am but meant to be practising social distancing. Most aren't bothering so I'm being extra careful and staying indoors as much as possible.

Like you, not meeting with people kind of just doesn't bother me. I'd love to get out in this nice weather but apart from that, I'm not too bothered.

Apolloanddaphne · 02/04/2020 04:55

I had a horrible trip to the supermarket yesterday too. There is no space in the aisles of out supermarket to properly keep the required distance even though they were limiting the numbers in store. It was very stressful.

I made sure that as well as essentials I bought wine, biscuits, crisps and ingredients to make rocky road because I think that this lockdown doesn't need to be a penance. We are not in prison for doing wrong and are allowed to have nice things to eat and drink to get us through.

Enjoy your crunchy nut cornflakes OP. I bought Frosties and plan to have them with banana and ice cold milk for breakfast today.

naughtycat · 02/04/2020 05:04

Yes you are right. We are not in penance. I was horrified and upset when I realised what's going on in the world. But the best thing we can do is follow the rules and look after our own mental health so as not to add to the casualties.

Im really glad I got my plant from Lidl, but I think I'm going to try to stick to the small local shops from now on though!

@naughtycat hope you’re feeling better. Ignore that idiot. Hope the rest of your week is better x

mathanxiety · 02/04/2020 05:24

People keep saying that is humans are sociable animals and we are not designed for isolation.

There's a difference between 'social animals' and 'sociable individuals', and I suspect you found it in living, breathing technicolour, in Lidl of all places.

Last time I went out I bought chocolate chips for baking cookies with and popcorn for DD in my nearest Aldi, which was eerily deserted. The only reason I didn't buy any wine was the three bottles I already have, left over from my birthday and Christmas.

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 02/04/2020 05:55

Went to a smallish supermarket yesterday (first shopping trip since last week). People were mostly being good, although quite a few who seem to think '2 feet' is roughly the same as '2 metres'. But the thing that got me was the elderly woman who parked her fat ass in the exit to conduct a conversation with a friend. When I asked her to move (twice) she nudged over a couple of inches. No way was she going to stop her conversation for the sake of health. In retrospect, I wish I'd made a real fuss and told them to get out of the way completely. Guess I need to learn to be far less polite.

EmpressMcSchnozzle · 02/04/2020 06:01

Yep. Hell is (most) other people, in my world. When this is finally over I'm hoping for even longer social distancing distances. One major reason I wanted us to move to Scotland (unlikely to happen ever, at this rate) is due to the lower population density. (I gather it's rammed with rich folk in camper vans right now, or it was, and that goes for Northumberland too, England's least densely populated county all year round, not just outside summer. Hasn't been much fun in coastal Somerset either, though they all appear to have vanished now. People out for walks today were being sensible, apart from one MAMIL who seemed to think the speed limit at the local nature reserve was 50mph and the rest of us were IN HIS WAY.)

Actually, if they can extend that social distancing thing to driving behaviour that will also be a GOOD THING.

We've ventured out to the supermarkets twice since Lockdown2020! The Movie (soon to be a best selling multiplayer game) began, and while the first time wasn't too bad (it was early in the morning, ish, after the NHS/vulnerable hour), the second time started off okay and by the end I was seriously thinking about making a crinoline with the dodgy old sewing machine we have in the Shed of Wonders. You know, sort of Scarlett O'Hara's dress at the start of Gone With The Wind, only made with a fabric more suited to British climes.

And on both times we bought food for the cats. One time we even bought cat milk. And chocolate. And wine. As well as bread and (shock horror) the 3 little microwaveable puddings we were allowed. While we still can. Reckon the time when we're all having to subsist on water, oatmeal, and "raw yeller cornmeal" might come soon enough. Shall we join you in the stocks, OP?!

(We also bought seeds. Which I've been intending to do for months. You know, just in case.)

SarahInAccounts · 02/04/2020 06:17

The joy police are here again.

The government has no problem with people buying non-essentials. Shops are allowed to sell everything they normally sell.

Cherrysherbet · 02/04/2020 06:20

I work in a supermarket. I am sick of people being nasty to each other about the 2m distance.
Some people think it’s their god given right to have ‘their’ space. Well, it’s not. We are all doing our best to function in this new world. You can only be mindful, and try your best.
I am not bothered by customers buying treats/non essentials, as what is ‘essential’ to one, may not be to another. What does annoy me is seeing the same shoppers every day! It doesn’t matter what you buy, just don’t come too often.

Op, you sound lovely and you did nothing wrong. I hope this time passes for you without further nastiness from other shoppers (I’ve witnessed plenty of it over the past few weeks) Stay safe ❤️

misscockerspaniel · 02/04/2020 06:26

Hope you enjoyed your mars bars and wine. Here are some more flowers for you Flowers

chomalungma · 02/04/2020 06:27

This situation is certainly showing some posters for who they are.

Shoot me @WorraLiberty

DS and I were out for a walk and on the way back, we brought some crumpets. Was that ok?

These are hard times - and just seeing another person helps. Hearing another person's voice.

To everyone out there - take care

Drivemybluecar · 02/04/2020 06:30

Op. I had this as well. The lady screamed at anyone coming anywhere near here. The aisle were small so everyone was staying as far apart as the could. I walked passed her looking at the aisle the other side and she went out of control.

You buy what you want when u go to the shops. Ignore the other zealous people on here. I bought ice cream on my shop the other day. Oh the horror

daisypond · 02/04/2020 06:30

basic necessities. If that was the actual case, the supermarket wouldn't stock anything other than flour, butter, milk, rice or pasta
The basic necessities are the stuff the supermarket doesn’t stock!
