Why don’t we hear about how many people have survived Coronavirus? Surely there are for more survivors than deaths, why isn’t this reported in the news?

Conspiracy theorists like rrg1 give public sector bodies way too much credit. A choice between ridiculously well-organised groups out there expertly taking over the world, or an ordinary virus, and guess which one they always pick.

The NHS are seeing this new disease wiping out unprecedented numbers of people. It's here. Get over it.

Oxyiz · 02/04/2020 08:27

I don't know how to link OP but I've just bumped another thread for you too

Gin96 · 02/04/2020 08:32

Thank you 😊

Whilst it's good to hear the 'good news' stories, I think it's best not to push them too hard. If people think "oh it's not so bad" we run the risk of them not taking adequate precautions to help stop the spread.

So, whilst there's no need to be all gloom and doom, we shouldn't start spreading good news stories.

Gin96 · 02/04/2020 08:40

I personally do know someone who is 36, in good health and ended up in intensive care with coronvirus, luckily he survived, so I don’t think this virus doesn’t exist, I also don’t think our government would do lockdown without good reason but we also must stay positive and we will come out the other side, the good news is the majority of us will only have mild symptoms, hopefully lockdown won’t go on forever and there is light at the end of the tunnel.

OP posts:
Gin96 · 02/04/2020 08:42

Yes we should spread good news stories, how ridiculous to say that 😡 How do you expect people to keep going without hope. I don’t think everyone are going to run outside and have a party. We all know someone in our family who are vulnerable.

OP posts:
booboo24 · 02/04/2020 09:04

I completely agree Gin96, a bit of balance is needed, certainly for people like me who suffer with generalised anxiety, my heart rate is through the roof constantly at the moment and I need these little glimmers of hope to get me through!!! I'm not about to jump in my car and go and hug my mum, I'm working full time from home now and making sure my 2 daughters (12 & 18) are getting through their school/Uni work, but I for one need to hear a bit of good news every now and again

Gin96 · 02/04/2020 09:12

@booboo24 exactly, why would anyone not want to spread good news stories as well 🤷‍♀️

OP posts:
Oxyiz · 02/04/2020 09:21

But that is probably why news agencies aren't pushing the message too hard. Some people WOULD say "oh so it's just a cold/flu" and ignore it, and be at risk.

ToTheDoctors · 02/04/2020 09:24

The Worldometer foe recovered in U.K. is definitely not accurate. It has been on 135 for over a week, I know for certain 16 were discharged from a U.K. hospital on Monday.

Gin96 · 02/04/2020 09:28

Well I for one need to hear good news, so much negatively on here, the vast majority of us will have mild symptoms, that is good news but my husband is high risk, high blood pressure, heart murmur, he had a stroke 10 years ago, asthma, he would probably not survive, the scary thing is, is not being able to have a proper funeral, my mum and Dad are 79. I also need to hear life will go back to normal, not now but in the not so distant future, so yes it gives me hope.

I think, and hope, that I’m a ‘survivor’. Started feeling unwell almost 2 weeks ago. Gradually got worse and on my worst day I felt like I was on some sort of drugs/drunk. Couldn’t get out of bed at all and was in and out of consciousness all day. This is a very common symptom as a lot of people have even been hallucinating. I had an awful dry cough, chest pains and had to sleep with a fan on to help me breathe. No temp though. I also had this horrible feeling in my throat and glands. Overall it’s honestly something I’ve never felt before. Not like a normal cold and when you think about where it comes from it makes you feel quite ‘icky’. I’ve never had a cough like that without lots of green/yellow mucus and it resulting in a bad chest infection.

IMO it was definitely the virus as I never get colds at this time of year. I honestly really hope so so that I now have immunity and can concentrate on my baby. There will be plenty of others like me. You just have to remain positiveSmileFlowers

Gin96 · 02/04/2020 09:36

Yes we do and the immunity test hopefully will be coming out soon, i’m looking forward to life returning to normal 😊

Gin96 · 02/04/2020 09:37

So recovery is probably a lot higher than reported?

OP posts:
Oxyiz · 02/04/2020 09:50

Recovery is definitely higher than reported. The stats you're seeing are just of the formally tested. That's why there's such such variation in country survival rates, along with different ways of reporting deaths.

PeterWeg · 02/04/2020 10:00

"80% are mild."
By that its means no hospitalisation. It still can be extremely bad.

On the other hand it can be a very mild cold.

Gin96 · 02/04/2020 10:05

@Oxyiz that is good news, I was beginning to loose hope on mumsnet and was going to leave, with all the negative posts that seemed to suggest all of us are high risk. I feel so much better reading this thread and the other one booboo linked, yet you still have people coming on here saying you shouldn’t highlight good news stories, why would people want do that 🤷‍♀️

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 02/04/2020 10:09

"so from the link 95% of infected people will have mild conditions, is that correct?"

gin6 No, not from what we've seen so far in Italy, Spain, France, China ....

WHO report :

https://www.who.int/docs/default-source/coronaviruse/who-china-joint-mission-on-covid-19-final-report.pdf

Page 12 - 13 says:
80% mild/moderate disease
with about half being mild and half being "moderate"

where Moderate is defined as 'has pneumonia' but not bad enough for hospital

So COVID statistics breakdown from that:

40% mild
40% pneumonia - staying at home
13.8% severe disease - hospital, need oxygen
6.1% critical - need ICU or will v probably die

BigChocFrenzy · 02/04/2020 10:10

That still means that the majority of even old people with comorbidities will survive CV
so noone is dooooomed !

Gin96 · 02/04/2020 10:12

I’m going ignore negative posts and focus on the positive ones from now on 😊

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 02/04/2020 10:13

The real problem is the prospect of too many people needing hospital at the same time,
as in Italy

Flattening the curve - measures like lockdown - is trying to avoid this happening in the UK too

Oxyiz · 02/04/2020 10:13

Because people do silly things and you can't always rely on everyone to be sensible.

The fear is that if everyone generally thinks it's mostly fine they'll start to ignore the rules and go out more. That will raise the number of seriously sick people, even if most of them are okay in the end.

The NHS will be overwhelmed and a lot of people will die - both from COVID and everything else.

At the moment keeping everyone inside and keeping that level of fear means fewer car crashes, fewer drunks in A and E etc, and it's all helping the NHS to cope.

Also its worth remembering that "mild symptoms" can be full-blown pneumonia, which can have long lasting effects on your body even if you survive. Unfortunately we still don't know for sure what the long term effects are of this virus, or if it affects longer term survival.

rrg1 · 02/04/2020 11:06

Totally the contrary. Take time to study the plans for us. Global governance is all mapped out here in these documents from the World Economic forum:

intelligence.weforum.org/topics/a1G0X000006O6EHUA0?tab=publications

It's a good starting point if you are interested in what is really happening, and what is going to happen, unless things change.
