Why are cases in Italy still rising when they have been on lockdown for 3 weeks?

Italy has been on lockdown for 23 days, from the 9th March. The number of new cases are starting to gradually reduce (thank goodness) but they are still rising. Yesterday there were 4053 new cases whilst their highest number of daily cases was 6557 cases on 21st March.

Surely during lockdown the only transmission that should occur for the majority of the cases is transmission within a family and occasionally transmission during rare trips to the supermarket or out for exercise? As well as hospital-acquired cases for both non-covid patients and medical staff.

Does that kind of transmission explain why there are still thousands of new cases each day or am I missing something?

Xiaoxiong,

I hope so, although even allowing Dow that reckoning it would be very unlikely we would be ‘unlocked’ until 3-5 weeks after the peak...so May earliest.

@liberoncolours No, I’m in London but my families and friends are in Seoul.

Their contact tracing is highly remarkable. For example, two cast members of the Phantom of the opera have been tested positive in the last couple of days (one American and one Canadian national), and the authority have contacted 8,578 audience members to encourage them to self isolate and visit one of the test centres should they have symptoms.

There had been 86 new confirmed cases in South Korea yesterday, 38 of which were from overseas. 20 of them were from Europe and 15 from the US. That is incredibly low considering the proximity/close relationship to China and the initial surge in Daegu region. I just wish we could turn back time and the British government took it as seriously Sad

Just chatting to my old friends in Lombardy & they are saying there are still people ignoring lockdown etc. They & the government are also very concerned that Easter is traditionally big family gatherings in the nearest bit of countryside for big picnics. They are very worried people's reaction going to do that anyway & it will increase cases massively ☹️
