Shopping/80 items

Is anyone else struggling with the 80 item only limit at Tesco’s. We are a family of 5 and I’m really struggling to keep it to 80, I wanted to do some cooking and baking this week but it’s just not worth me adding the ingredients into the basket when I have to stick to 80 so can’t do that. I know I’m lucky to have a online shop and there are bigger problems but I don’t know why the 80 applies to all costumers surely bigger households could have been allowed extra. Say 100? 80 Adds up really quickly and I haven’t even added my shower gels/washing powder etc which I have completely run out of. I can’t go out to get this stuff as dd is in the extremely vulnerable category and I’m a lone parent. It’s bad enough with the 3 item limit as I can’t even buy the kids Easter eggs to cheer them up as I’m only
Allowed 3.

Does not make sense at all, I am having same problem here. So now I need two deliveries instead of one and can’t find another slot for the foreseeable future. I bet it forced more people to look for slots, instead of ordering one delivery every few weeks or so..

It's a pain but the supermarkets don't have time to be quizzing everybody's family size to make exceptions so you've just got to make it work. Think of ways around things so that you're ordering less individual items , for example buying a four pack of bar soap rather than multiple bottles of shower gel and hand soaps. Get bigger packs of things and repeat meals so you're using less different ingredients. The Easter eggs shouldn't be a problem unless you've got more than three children all wanting exactly the same egg as you can have more than 3 Easter eggs just not more than 3 of any one item.

Exactly. It really isn’t hard to work out that bigger families will need more stuff, I may have to get someone to look after dd to allow me to go to the shops and get stuff (which isn’t allowed either!) but she’s not old enough to be left home alone and I can’t bring her. Half the shopping doesn’t even turn up anyway so even when you can only buy 80 you only get half of that anyway. My sisters Tesco shop cancelled on here yesterday an hour before it was due to be delivered.

I think 80 is pretty manageable really. And they won’t stop you buying four different Easter eggs, it’s only four of the same kind. So you can buy four different loaves of bread, just not four of the same kind. Buying multipacks of fruit and veg instead of loose is enough to get us under the 80 without other adjustments.

Oh I didn’t realise you could buy 3 different ones (atleast that’s something) I have 4 children. I have already tried to add multi packs instead but a lot of the time they are coming to more money than single items and I’m already spending a fortune as it is with all 4 kids at home all day and not really any deals any more or all the value range saying it’s out of stock.

I’m sure you can buy 3 Easter eggs, you just can’t buy 3 exactly the same

You have to be careful on loose stuff so instead of buying loose jacket potatoes you need to buy a bag to keep the numbers down

Agree. I have been getting shopping in for my parents too so trying to get messages for 7 people and 2 dogs. When one onion counts as one item but packs of onions are sold out...argh! 3 carrots will not a soup make, Mr Tesco!

It’s not fair at all
We average 150-200 items each time and this isn’t enough for a large family where there are disabilities and SN around food (asd and arfid) plus the need for extra cleaning supplies weekly

We’re also switching to getting fruit and veg delivered from a local farmshop, which will save lots of items. Might be worth a try?

I’ve looked at them but I couldn’t afford it tbh. They want £30 where I am and it doesn’t look like you get much, wouldnt last my family long anyway.

Ok I'm doing something wrong then as there are 4 of us normally do a weekly shop, this has made me realise I don't normally put more then about 50 items in the shopping basket on average a week. So I though the 80 limit was quite generous, DH made me fill it up. Can't get another shop for a while though.

I agree, it doesn't make sense and doesn't take into account the people, like me, who are also shopping for vulnerable parents.

I think a lot of people will v changing the supermarket they use after all of this is over.

I've had asthma for years and always use Sainsbury's when I'm too ill to get to the shops. Can I get a delivery? Can I fuck.

Well I suppose all families are different. My kids eat a lot!

I was using click and collect to get groceries for us and 2 elderly couples, which was tricky with the 'only 2 of everything' rule but I was managing to get everything for them and we could do one local top up each week. Now the 80 items rule has come in I can only get groceries for them and we have to do our main shopping in the store for our stuff.
I'm really disappointed in Tesco tbh.

I had to buy an extremely expensive bag of frozen chopped onions as I exceeded my 6 pieces of veg! Completely bonkers, 6 pieces of veg do not last a week in a family of four. Frozen has a separate limit of 6.

Tbf ive found Tesco’s the best out of a bad bunch, Sainsburys doesn’t even let you on unless vulnerable or elderly and my dd is extremely vulnerable but because it’s her and not me I can’t use them. I’ve tried to call them but can never get through.

Really? Family of 4 and I decided to go up to the 80 item maximum and also shopped a few bits for my Nan (12 items)
Got more than enough food (and some cleaning products) for the week

We are a family of 5 too and I've switched everything to multipacks or the biggest pack of anything I can get. When you take into account there are 4 loaves of bread and 4 cartons of milk on there for a start, that's a 10th of the allocation.
We are fortunate that we have two freezers so I can buy big packs of eg, sausages which are bigger than a pack of fresh.
Are you meal planning? I've planned everything and have just enough left to get some treats, Easter eggs and the biggest multi- pack of crisps etc I can get.

You could use the SMOL free trial for washing machine tabs, enough for 9 washes and you just pay postage, fits through letterbox.

I'm struggling with the 80 items because we couldn't get a slot for so long that we've completely used up all our stuff at home and now having to try and get two slots instead of just doing it all on one 🤷🏻‍♀️

I had a Tesco shop delivered last night. It had to serve both my family (4 of us) and my Dad (I dropped the shopping outside his door) and it was a really difficult task prioritising what to get with our 80 items (especially as they didn't have bunches of bananas available and instead I had to buy 5 individual ones for DF, which took up 5 items... bananas are very important to him ) and then 4 items weren't available.
I do understand why they've done it, but yeah, it's bloody difficult.

Why not look on amazon for things like shower gel, cleaning products etc? You should be able to get free delivery if you order enough

Also Superdrug deliver free on a £10 order if you have a loyalty card (can just register for a virtual one online). So can use that for shower gel, toiletries, etc.
