Shopping/80 items

Is anyone else struggling with the 80 item only limit at Tesco’s. We are a family of 5 and I’m really struggling to keep it to 80, I wanted to do some cooking and baking this week but it’s just not worth me adding the ingredients into the basket when I have to stick to 80 so can’t do that. I know I’m lucky to have a online shop and there are bigger problems but I don’t know why the 80 applies to all costumers surely bigger households could have been allowed extra. Say 100? 80 Adds up really quickly and I haven’t even added my shower gels/washing powder etc which I have completely run out of. I can’t go out to get this stuff as dd is in the extremely vulnerable category and I’m a lone parent. It’s bad enough with the 3 item limit as I can’t even buy the kids Easter eggs to cheer them up as I’m only
Allowed 3.

For those saying it doesn't make sense I think the problem was that people were putting in huge orders which filled the delivery vans which meant other people didn't get their shopping at all. In that respect it does make sense as at least everybody on the list gets a decent amount of shopping rather than some people getting hundreds of items and others getting none. The vans can't just keeping going back to the shops to top up and there's a limit to how much they can fit in. No it doesn't take into account those with loads of children, those shopping for others, those with sensory needs around food, those shopping fortnightly etc etc but these are testing times and they've come up with a system to try to get food to the most amount of people possible. 80 items won't just have been pulled from a hat, it must be a fairly average amount for an internet shop. Those whose needs fall outside of that just need to try to make do as best they can. It's not ideal but nor is this whole situation.

Oh god I can’t afford amazon prices I’ve looked on there and things are so much more money, also Superdrug’s is a good idea but I have zero shower gel so I cant wait a week for delivery. I can’t see why they’ve done it as I think it was because people are shopping for themselves plus 5 neighbours (as nice as that’s is) it’s the reason why the limits were put on

Were a family of 6 and 80 items doesn't work well for us either.

I haven't been to the shops for two weeks and this is the last slot I could get. My son is disabled and tbh its possibly last hassle to just go into the shop.

I'm watching how much we all eat and I'm only going go if im totally desperate. But I will buy whatever I can so I dont have to go more than once a week.

forrasee · 01/04/2020 16:12

If you're a family of 5 can one of the others not look after DD while you go to the shop?

PumpkinP · 01/04/2020 16:15

I’m a lone parent to 4.

I'm struggling with this as I'm shopping for us four, BF's parents and an older lady along the road.

bumpsadaisy11 · 01/04/2020 16:29

I feel your pain OP. We are a family of 5. But i am also getting shopping for my mum & dad (who are in isolation) & our eldest DS who lives on his own in his flat & is in isolation due to a serious health condition & having recently come out of hospital..
I had 160 items in my basket & literally had to halve it. Shopping was delivered this morning & then had to go to Sainsbury's to get the missing stuff.
We have our shopping delivered as one of our children has multiple Special Needs & 4 of the 5 of us have underlying health conditions.
We try to avoid going out wherever possible.

cinammonbuns · 01/04/2020 16:44

Superdrug often do same day click and collect

PumpkinP · 01/04/2020 17:21

I can’t go out to collect, unless I get someone to look after dd which like I said you’re not suppose to do that either

TheGreatWave · 01/04/2020 18:05

instead I had to buy 5 individual ones for DF, which took up 5 items..

Now that is completely ridiculous, surely they could have the system working out that that is in effect one item.

Going forwards though it may need to be that you buy the biggest size possible of something so you can alternate what you need to buy.

PumpkinP · 01/04/2020 19:02

Just tried to order from a local shop near me on deliveroo and they cancelled the order. So much for ordering from local corner shops! I don’t think they can keep up with the Demand

80 isn't manageable here either. Large family. Did have 125 items on my original list.
So because I've not got nearly enough for the week I shall have to go out shopping.
Luckily Waitrose is scrapping the limits on items so hopefully I'll be able to get all the rest that I need in one shop. And Tesco's won't get my custom until they follow suit.

MiddlesexGirl · 01/04/2020 19:05

And yes - 5 carrots is 5 items. Got a bag instead but that doesn't work for all items.

2ndAugust · 03/04/2020 11:20

I’m sorry I think you are being selfish. My elderly parents have been unable to get a delivery for weeks, if the limit helps them deliver to more people surely you can accomodate these limits.

emmathedilemma · 03/04/2020 11:26

I don't know how families are doing it. I did my parent's shop online for them and had to start juggling around item numbers or looking for multipacks to bring it in within the 80 item limit and that's was just for 2 people with no household stuff on the list other than a couple of items. It also doesn't make sense that if something like the 1kg bags of carrots are out of stock then you can only have 3 loose carrots!
I guess they've had to do it on a quick turnaround for IT purposes but some of it just doesn't make sense and really needs to be by volume or weight than individual items.

emmathedilemma · 03/04/2020 11:31

@2ndAugust I'm sure the item limit isn't going to free up more delivery slots, if anything it will take up more as people will need to shop more frequently. It was brought in to stop people panic buying as it's applied in store as well as online. It's the idiots who went and cleared the shelves 2 weeks ago who were selfish!!

Xanadu58 · 03/04/2020 11:37

There's apparently no limit at Asda . My DH has just started as a delivery driver there and says some deliveries are between 10 and 15 crates per house! Ridiculous. It's one extreme to the other !
