We have followed the rules. Not been out etc.

However I've just realised....

I touch any Post / Letters / Parcels /Shopping / Food etc. (Basically everything that comes into the home) and I've not been washing / wiping it down or washing my hands afterwards.

I've even signed for a couple of bits just this week with the hand held computer and pen thing.

I feel like such an idiot!!!

Don’t stress now, it’s done. The risk from mail is slim. I’m surprised you were asked to sign a hand held device, as far as I knew no company has used them for weeks. Just decline next time.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/04/2020 08:32

Well, you know now!

I'm really surprised the delivery people asked you to sign, they stopped doing that here weeks ago.

louise5754 · 01/04/2020 08:42

Royal Mail stand at the end of our drive and point to any parcels left on the step.

I've sighed for 2 Hermes parcels in the last two weeks. It did worry me as god knows where she has been.

I'm having a new freezer delivered today too. Not looking forward to that but the other one isn't working.

Needs must, with something like a freezer. Try to think ahead how to minimise contact.

It sounds like Hermes are not giving good advice to their people. Coincidentally just now DH said we're due a delivery from them and they won't allow a 'leave in porch' instruction, that they're still wanting a signal and would leave with a neighbour if we weren't in (which, of course, we will be even if we have to delay our walk). Pretty appalling.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/04/2020 08:50

Signature, obv, not 'signal'. Semaphore would be ideal.

MyEnormousTurnip · 01/04/2020 08:52

We had washing machine delivered yesterday. Delivery bloke was wearing gloves, stood back from the door, asked where I wanted it putting, wheeled it into the hall and left. No signing. I wiped down the packaging and left it til dh came home and we unwrapped and installed it.

dottiedodah · 01/04/2020 09:13

Amazon have been leaving parcels on the step ATM(just knocking and going to the end of the path) However Postman handed parcel to DD! Dont know whether they have been told this is OK or not!

louise5754 · 01/04/2020 09:15

@ErrolTheDragon

I had an email from Hermes advising me to add a safe place to minimise contact. I couldn't add my own so
I chose "Shed" she still knocked on the door and said she can't leave it in the Shed and it needed a signature.

OP posts:
Coldilox · 01/04/2020 09:16

You don’t need to wash your shopping or your post. You do need to wash your hands.

louise5754 · 01/04/2020 09:17

@MyEnormousTurnip DHL just called. They will leave it on the drive. It's an American style one so not exactly light.

I do understand but I'm not sure how I'll get it in.

OP posts:
louise5754 · 01/04/2020 09:18

@Coldilox I know it's common sense really however I have s couple of MH issues and I don't have a lot of that lol

HarrietThePi · 01/04/2020 09:20

On the Hermes site it does say "click here to arrange contactless delivery" or something. We have a delivery due from them so I was just looking at it but haven't done it yet. It's bad they're not doing it as a matter of course. Doesn't seem fair to their drivers at all and goes against the guidance completely, imagine how many deliveries they're doing per day. Funnily enough, in normal times Hermes are the ones who usually seem to chuck parcels at our door without checking if we're home and barely leaving the van.

Disco91 · 01/04/2020 12:15

I spoke to a DPD delivery driver (from afar obviously) the other day and he was very annoyed because head office told him he had to get a photo of people holding the package or leave it somewhere and get a photo. This was because people were claiming parcels hadn't been delivered when they had been because they were no longer insisting on signatures - people knew they could pull a fast one.

People are disgusting, were in a pandemic and they are making delivery drivers lives harder when they are already busy

Thighmageddon · 01/04/2020 12:20

Our Hermes delivery man is not asking for signatures at all. He leaves the parcel on the doorstep, rings the bell and walks back and signs himself.

DPD are taking pictures but not necessarily holding the item. They just take pics of the parcel and the front door being open from a distance.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 01/04/2020 12:25

most are not asking for sigs. As for the post, low risk, just unwrap/open, bin packaging and wash your hands. Easy

Theresnobslikeshowb · 01/04/2020 12:25

Our postman and any deliveries from Hermes, Parcel force etc, have all knocked on the door and left the parcel then walked to our gate, about 2.5 metres away. No signing from any of them.

thetemptationofchocolate · 01/04/2020 12:29

We had a parcel delivered by DPD the other day. DH opened the door & stood back, parcel was put in the open door, delivery man took a picture, and went away.

MagnoliaJustice · 01/04/2020 12:29

I've had a few deliveries that usually need signing for, but as others have said, the delivery person has left the package on the step, knocked at the door, then retreated to the gate.

Just wash your hands thoroughly.

GabsAlot · 01/04/2020 12:37

i havent washed my post or my shoping yet-so far so good

greathat · 01/04/2020 13:02

Dpd driver of dh's new desk needed a photo of front door open yesterday

DroppedBoxxedRuth · 01/04/2020 13:05

We've had a few deliveries and I just stand behind the screen door (in Aus) and ask for it to be left on our porch.

Haven't signed for anything and would refuse at this time.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow · 01/04/2020 13:09

I got hermes email about not needing to sign, yet their driver demanded signature last week... Well after the email.

You are not thick. You minimised the risk. You can never make it a 0%

Poppi89 · 01/04/2020 13:11

I haven't washed my post or shopping yet either I didn't realise it was a thing! I haven't become ill.
However, I don't come into contact with many people and I go shopping about every 1/2 weeks so I have low contact with people anyway. I have just increased my hand washing, only going out once a day, only shopping when I absolutely need to and not seeing anyone other than who lives in my home.
I don't think I will be doing anything more than this unless the government says to.

pickletickled · 01/04/2020 14:01

I had a bit of a panic the other day OP
I'd done an Amazon pantry order for some essentials and while doing it I remembered that I couldn't find sanitary towels the last time I was physically in a shop (the ones I can use had been panic bought!!)
So I found some on amazon and put them in with the other stuff.
At no point was I made aware that they weren't in the UK
I had delivery updates and wondered why I was to receive 2 deliveries... I opened the track your parcel page and it was for the sanitary towels..they were en route from frigging amazon in MADRID!!
My panic and paranoia began.
You'd have thought the delivery guy was leaving me a bomb the way I behaving.
I have cleaned the package thoroughly, bagged them up and now they're in 'quarantine' in a cupboard under my stairs for 2 weeks Hmm Hmm :)
OTT? yes! Irrational? Yes! bat shit crazy? also yes!
but I feel better for it :)

anotherlittlechicken · 01/04/2020 14:06

I am confused about the sign-for thing.

As far as I know, Royal Mail/The Post Office, and all delivery companies stopped it about 2 weeks back.
