When do you honestly think it will happen? And when do you want it to happen?!

" Not feasible, teachers are still working until Mid July (either in school or at home) and don't get paid for the holidays so there's no chance they'll rock up at school in August."

Teacher - those employed by the county councils - do get paid as they are salaried. They are still supporting learners from home at the moment - which is not actually an easy task.

I dont think they will reopen till at least May. As to what I would like - as soon as possible.

ThisMumisaMan · 01/04/2020 18:16

Not a cat in hell's chance of seeing normal school resuming this side of September, at most if restrictions are lifted there may be moving up days for those changing schools, but I really can't see the point in returning for what could be as little as 2 or 3 weeks, even at best estimates!

To those saying teachers can teach over summer because doctors and nurses have also had annual leave cancelled...

  1. NHS workers will be able to take the leave later, once things return to normal, teachers won't because when they do, students will also have to.

  2. Not all doctors and nurses have cancelled leave, I know several who've been told to carry on as normal and their leave will only be cancelled if necessary.

babybeets · 01/04/2020 18:18

Just a thought (I’m a teacher - so please don’t shout. It is just a passing thought) why don’t we just start holidays early (end of May) and then get them all back to school early? Start of August? As I say...just a thought!

Kathsmum · 01/04/2020 18:18

You start with the summer term planning maybe that’s already done then try to cut the following terms down? The main issue is the exam years have less time so even if years 5-6 9-12 were in that would be a good start?

DBML · 01/04/2020 18:19

@babybeets

Because if we’re back to normal enough to go back to school, I’m off on holiday.

Appuskidu · 01/04/2020 18:19

Someone’s just put a link on the staffroom board saying the summer holidays will not be cancelled in Wales. They won’t cancel them in England/Scotland but not Wales.

DBML · 01/04/2020 18:20

@Appuskidu

That doesn’t make any sense

Kathsmum · 01/04/2020 18:21

Also our contract is based on days taught so if you’re on a rota that could be staggered over the next few months? To equal the same number of days? Just thinking of different versions...

Sophiasky · 01/04/2020 18:22

My son is in Year 8 and he was due to have his options evening in a couple of weeks, to give him advice about what GCSEs he wants to pick to start in September when he goes into Year 9 - at his school, they start them in Year 9 (I think some schools start them in Year 10). His Head of Year told me that they won't just send the children out a form to fill in saying what they want to do, as it is an important decision to make, and that some children would need some help in deciding. However, I don't think that his school will be starting them in September now, as the school is not due to re-start until then. I think that they might start the GCSEs in Year 10 instead, or, failing that, perhaps after the Autumn term when the children have had time to discuss their possible GCSEs at school (and the teachers have had time to sort out the GCSE classes).

Kathsmum · 01/04/2020 18:23

Scottish system is totally different to England and Wales so they could do different but realistically England and Wales need to agree

Appuskidu · 01/04/2020 18:25

Sorry-it made sense to me.

Fabulousdahlink · 01/04/2020 18:28

Our school plans currently include being open every weekday from now til September for all staff, on a rota, including term time only paid support staff who dont get paid to work holidays and havent been asked to volunteer. Not negotiable.

We even plan to welcome other schools staff and children as their schools close due to sickness, exponentially increasing our exposure to the virus as the cohort keeps changing. We are scared.

I can tell you - we miss our students. We worry about our students. We worry about educational 'fall back', we want to see our friends and colleagues. We want it to be sorted and have some much deserved 'summer holidays' with our own children before September.

I can tell you

DBML · 01/04/2020 18:29

@Appuskidu

So wales won’t cancel the summer hols.

England and Scotland won’t cancel the holidays.

But Wales won’t.

How did this make sense to you? Sorry I imagine it sounds awful in text, I’m just trying to work it out?

Appuskidu · 01/04/2020 18:30

I meant that they won’t cancel them in England/Scotland if they aren’t going to cancel them in Wales.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 01/04/2020 18:31

Hello.
It was my link to the announcement made by the minister for education in a press conference today.

12 minutes in. No prevarication in the reply. Just a straight forward 'The 6 week summer break will go ahead as usual'.

DBML · 01/04/2020 18:32

@Appuskido

Got you. 😊

DrMadelineMaxwell · 01/04/2020 18:34

@Appuskidu Completely as an aside, it's now your fault that your username song is now going round in my head!

MollyMinniesMum · 01/04/2020 18:34

September... maybe....

alig99 · 01/04/2020 18:35

There should be no reason to wait until after the normal summer holiday period if everything has returned to normal by July. Surely restart of children’s education should the primary factor as they will have had 4 plus months off alongside the majority of teachers. Education, Education, Education not more time off.

tuffluv2000 · 01/04/2020 18:40

i'm hoping it will be beginning of June or there abouts, peak is due next week approx, then hopefully slowly decline all way through rest of April and May.

allanaw929 · 01/04/2020 18:41

@JustOneSquareofDarkChocolate I think you're right, hundreds of thousands of people have had their annual leave cancelled, even in pharmacies, labs etc etc etc, so teachers should just suck it up like everyone else. I'd give anything to be out at work, even during the crisis, so if it's safe to do so then they should work, I mean this is kids education we're talking about, it's not as if it's not important. And I don't have a child in school so I don't think I'm biased either.

Bellsandwhistle · 01/04/2020 18:43

Halloween. No way they will let them all back in in September. There will be a phased return once the government have got key workers and essential businesses back up and running which will be the priority.

CallmeAngelina · 01/04/2020 18:45

And as it's been explained time and again, allanaw929, those hundreds of thousands of people will be able to take that holiday at a later date. Teachers won't.
And teachers have been sucking it up - as evidenced by the fact that schools have cancelled the Easter holidays - my friend received her email today requiring her to be in school on Good Friday, for instance.

SmileEachDay · 01/04/2020 18:46

alongside the majority of teachers

Except we are teaching?

Aside from that: this whole situation is traumatising for many, many children. Do you not think that - rather than further disrupting what is normal for them - they will need the summer to regain some balance? Go on holiday with their families? Socialise with their friends? Why do you want to rush them back into school, at a time of year they have never been at school?

Freak8 · 01/04/2020 18:48

They have said school will more than likely open in September but not guaranteed. When I speak to the teachers I know they are all saying it wont be before September as far as they know
