When do you honestly think it will happen? And when do you want it to happen?!

Teachers are are still working, why on earth should the holidays be shortened !!!!!

DrMadelineMaxwell · 01/04/2020 18:52

Not sure I already said this on this thread, but most of the modelling, along with the advice for the more vulnerable to shield has been based on 12 weeks ish.
Which could suggest, depending on the surge and flattening of the number of cases, that we could well see schools opening in late June/July for a few weeks.

Then close for the summer break.

This would allow for another smaller surge to build up before the break over the summer to naturally shut schools again. Schools can account for 1/3rd of transmissions of disease, so although kids are not affected usually as much, they are a vector of disease transmission.

This is a long term game they are playing, over the next year and beyond.

The surge is greater in the South of Wales, for example but is less and later in the North. So they may well relax measures in different places rather than a blanket closure/social distancing etc in the future months.

Rachel1874 · 01/04/2020 18:54

After summer holidays.

refraction · 01/04/2020 18:54

They don't know. It suggests May or September.

We need to test.

@allanaw929 teachers don't have annual leave to cancel in that way. We are working for nothing over the Easter break, but asking people to work for nothing for six weeks is not really going to happen. We aren't asking doctors and nurses to work for nothing for six weeks, they're being paid. If the government pay me for an extra six weeks of the year then I will work as best I can. This is really unlikely to happen though.

Hopefulmama34 · 01/04/2020 18:55

I think early-mid June but at the very latest September.

refraction · 01/04/2020 18:57

Beets that would be a heck of a long term.

They just cope with the Sep- Dec as it is.

paulaer · 01/04/2020 18:58

I’m a secondary school teacher and we are open for vulnerable/key worker students. We haven’t been given any information regarding opening again but the thinking is ASAP, maybe phased or certain year groups in certain days. This is speculation of course, personally I’m thinking June rather than September, but that’s just based on gut feeling

HoffiCoffi13 · 01/04/2020 18:59

My children are still working. Their teachers are still working. Why on earth would the summer holidays be cancelled? Everyone will need a break.

amispeakingenglish · 01/04/2020 18:59

JustOneSquareofDarkChocolate
Police offices, nurses and doctors in my area (SE London) have had their annual leave cancelled. And they are “contractually entitled” to that too - they are just accepting that this is a national crisis.

You forget they are free to rebook at any time of year, but teachers can only have the school holiday. It's also a lot of extra work for teachers right now, not every child has internet/computer at home so hard copies of all the lessons have to be prepared too. Lots of lessons have had to re done so can be delivered.

Mila1404 · 01/04/2020 19:01

I am chair of governors for a school and we are being told to plan for autumn term at earliest. So SEP term, sorry x

Burratorchildhood · 01/04/2020 19:02

I’m responding to a post from earlier in the thread so sorry if this isn’t as relevant anymore, but I wanted to respond about children coming back to school in August and also about the teachers ‘sucking it up’. I’m a teacher and I have a holiday booked for August and I dearly hope my family and I can still go on it!? Who knows. Also I’m currently home schooling my own 2 children along with planning and marking all the online work my class is handing in online. Teachers are still working even though children are not at school. Just like all the working parents on here, muddling through just like everyone else. we are are not currently kicking back with a G & T (though that would be nice). I am finding it super tough having my kids at home all day, every day. I expect we all are. Please can we not teacher bash and tell teachers to ‘suck it up’. Suck what up? We were forced to close. And when we’re told we can open again we will. End of. X

earnshaw47 · 01/04/2020 19:05

the schools will prob re-open just before the long summer holiday begin so they will be off another six weeks

CallmeAngelina · 01/04/2020 19:12

Have you read any of the fucking thread, earnshaw?
Or did you just think you'd waltz in here at the end and try to be clever?

Loopey007 · 01/04/2020 19:14

Teachers are working from home and looking after vulnerable and key workers children so don’t get to excited about things going back to normal in June.

Onceateacher · 01/04/2020 19:17

If the schools reopen before the summer, is that an end to social distancing then? Because if children are at school, they will not stay at home when the holidays start, they will go out and meet up in groups.

FlossyChick · 01/04/2020 19:18

Teacher here- working 14 hour days- and most of weekend researching, prepping, modifying work schemes, creating modified resources, putting work online, addressing/trying to sort pastoral issues remotely, contacting non compliant students and parents, marking, giving feedback, re/ marking, creating extension work, marking.
Please don’t assume I am on ‘holiday’.
Also have my own three children at home, who are all doing their own school/uni work. Covering for unwell colleagues at the same time.
I know lots of people working at home- they are working- teachers are also working!

JCSAR · 01/04/2020 19:19

I’m thinking September but I’m hoping it’s before. Selfishly I love having my boy at home and am enjoying the extra time with him so much. However I feel so sorry for him and all the children in the same position. He adores school and it feels like he’s missing out on so much. He’s only 5 and so it’s not so much about the learning but just seeing his friends and teachers, it makes me feel so sad. I hope they get to go back and have a few weeks enjoying end of year things before the summer holidays.

Onceateacher · 01/04/2020 19:20

To be fair Flossy, working 14 hour days is not sustainable and you are not doing any favours for your colleagues who cannot do that for various reasons. It also makes you susceptible to getting ill.

Legoandloldolls · 01/04/2020 19:22

I thought September since they closed. I have already got this years uniform in the charity shop bag.

Palaver1 · 01/04/2020 19:27

Anything within reason and if it means no long summer break then thats what it is.
The police force are used to this their annual leave being pulled.
We have to do what we have to do.its a sacrife that if its called for will have to be made.

I hope its not a return in September it will be a nightmare to get pupils settled.

sorrelli · 01/04/2020 19:34

Does anyone think they’ll open nurseries first? I’ve heard this but not sure.

Eeyoresstickhouse · 01/04/2020 19:36

We had a meeting at work today and January was our plan B! We are hoping for September but have been told to have plans that are movable to January! This is in HE.

maureen17 · 01/04/2020 19:39

september

Bewareoftheblob · 01/04/2020 19:39

Apologies @MyWitzEnd, what's not true?
