When do you honestly think it will happen? And when do you want it to happen?!

Cornish you are not going to rally other teachers around your cause because your Headteacher isn’t delivering enough to justify fees.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 02/04/2020 13:47

Lostmyshityear9 totally agree.

After my family, the kids l teach are my priority. But my family are first.
I’m a committed, dedicated teacher. But my family are first.
I don’t want to go back until the virus has died down an awful lot, because my family are first.

So there you are. I don’t want my daughter to be motherless. No matter how much l care for my students (and l do) my family are first.

And as l teach older students who can articulate what’s happening, they are seriously fed up about exams, but they are more scared for their parents and siblings as their family comes first.

So Cornish, it would appear that only you prioritise your students over your family. What do you not understand? Deaths rising, social distancing? Terrifying virus?

Boris hasn’t put his hand in his pocket for no reason. But even he recognises the importance of saving lives.

Glad l don’t work with you. Our SMT have been amazing and are following Union and government advice to the T.

Can only think you have the gift of immortality

Onceateacher · 02/04/2020 13:49

@Glaceon thank you for the light relief! Grin

refraction · 02/04/2020 14:06

Cornish I am cringing for you.

How embarrassing.

SpokeTooSoon · 02/04/2020 14:11

I think cornish is spot on actually. I do wonder about the people adamantly staying September when other countries are looking to restart schools much sooner. I think anyone who cares about children, their education and well-being is hoping desperately for a much earlier reopening.

SmileEachDay · 02/04/2020 14:12

Cornish

I think you’re being deliberately goady.

You work in the private sector. That removes your right to the moral high horse.

You don’t care about kids. You care about the children of the select few who can afford private education.

You don’t give a stuff about the hundreds of thousands of other kids, otherwise you’d work with them.

DBML · 02/04/2020 14:14

@spoketoosoon

I think there’s been a misunderstanding on this thread.

No one is hoping for September. We’d all love to go back sooner if it’s safe to do so.

The only argument is that teaching staff feel it’s unreasonable for teachers to be requested to work through their summer holidays (unpaid) to make up for lost time. So, no, we would not be happy to start back at school say, beginning of August.

So, if we manage 7 weeks before the summer holiday I’ll be thrilled. But if not, it would have to wait until September.

Bewareoftheblob · 02/04/2020 14:22

I am lost for words, and acutely aware that we are not all like you, thank heavens, some of us actually care, but honestly I can't think why you are even employed to do such an important job in the first place.

Thank God for @cornishdreams1, the Mother Theresa of teachers Grin Grin

CallmeAngelina · 02/04/2020 14:22

What DBML said.
This was not actually a thread for teachers specifically, so quite a lot of the posters saying they think (not wish) for September will be parents, not necessarily school staff.
And anyway, what people may or may not be "hoping for" is largely irrelevant, as it will be decided by Government and we teachers, as happened before when we closed, will find out on the news at the same time as everybody else.
And we will rise to the challenge of the inevitable short notice in a similar way.

CouldBeOuting · 02/04/2020 14:32

^This a hundred times over

I am also hoping that I don’t catch the virus and bring it home to my husband and son (daughter is staying in her uni lodgings as she is safer away from me as I am high risk for bringing it home).

I am now working the same hours as all my colleagues. Whether we are usually full time or part time we are all doing the same rota. This means we will all be working over Easter “holiday”, some of us in the bank holidays.

We are doing it for our children (who are very important to us) and our colleagues. My school is amazing and we are FAMILY.

Also, don't forget that one of the main reasons schools were closed to children in the first place was to protect them and the wider community, not to give teachers an extended holiday.
There seems to be an assumption here (and in the wider world) that education establishments have shut up shop, and that we should therefore not mind in the least foregoing our unpaid holidays that can't be recouped at a later point.
Teachers and education providers are STILL AT WORK! So too are students (or at least, they should be!).

YumMum007 · 02/04/2020 14:48

Seriously?! Try and chill everyone. Don't take it all so seriously.

Know this is going to sound bad but I hope they don't reopen until September. I dread the school run with my 3 every morning. Don't get me wrong, they make their own breakfast and get dressed without prompting (aged 4, 5, and 7) but we're always late because I struggle to get out of bed myself. No real reason, just love my sleep. I've run out of excuses for the late book. A few missed months won't hurt them.

refraction · 02/04/2020 14:57

Obviously! But just because people say when it's safe to do so they will go back does not mean they are a disgrace to teaching.Hmm

HarrySnotter · 02/04/2020 15:08

@cornishdreams1 I'm so disappointed in your last post.

Are you a teacher at all?

parry45 · 02/04/2020 15:09

I agree with @cinammonbuns. I am a teacher, but am home with a vulnerable child.

JassyRadlett · 02/04/2020 15:48

I don’t know, I like my sleep and the extra 30 minutes in bed these days is definitely an upside.

But I also really like having a job and financial security and paying the mortgage. With no school and more importantly no nursery I can’t see my (kind, understanding) employers being happy with the current arrangements until September, particularly if business starts ramping up again.

Me not being able to pay the mortgage or put food on the table will hurt my kids quite a lot actually.

But yeah, you’re right. Everyone should just chill about these things. No big deal.

Aubrystrawberry · 02/04/2020 15:48

@YumMum007

You are basing that on not being arsed yourself though!

The one thing every child will be missing out on that's an issue is socialising! It's ok for a few weeks but a few months. I'm already feeling lonely and it's only been 14 days!! My 5 year old has done loads of things. Planting seeds. Watching Tele. Doing work sheets. Playing outside. Playing on the tablet. Water. Late nights. Colouring. Music. Toys. Arts and crafts. She wants to go back to school now. She's bored and fed up at home. She's wanting food every five minutes because she's bored. She likes being with her teachers and friends. I am so worried about how we will feel in another week or two.

bemusedmoose · 02/04/2020 15:50

Personally I think September. I'm happy to keep kids home as long as needed so I'm in no rush. I work in a school and really miss what I do but I would rather everyone is safe and well.

Not sure where to start with this.
If that’s how you feel about school then why send them at all? Homeschool them permanently. Then you can sleep as long as you want, and teachers/pupils won’t be disrupted hi your children turning up late every day.

I also work in a school and we currently have no idea. Wouldn't surprise me if it's September but I'm hoping after May half term. That way children will be able to transition to new classes/schools and get a bit of normality back before the summer holidays (let's hope that we can get out and about over summer). I think if it's September, so many will really struggle after 6 months at home, even with all the super activities parents and teachers are sorting for them.

Delatron · 02/04/2020 16:31

I’m also worried about the discrepancies between schools at to what they are providing.

Some are doing a full timetable of online lessons. We just get a sheet of activities that look like it’s been put together in 10 minutes. No marking/ no email contact with teacher. This is supposed to be an outstanding school.

I’m doing what I can but some children (those with parents that work full time too) will suffer more than others.

zorroinlondon · 02/04/2020 16:33

At this rate i doubt it very much!

Rosebel · 02/04/2020 16:36

The death rate is rising so rapidly though and we haven't even but the peak yet. There's no way any school or the government can make a decision until that happens and I'm sure the predicated peak isn't until May. So if that's true they could technically go back in June but if the peak hits later will it be worth going to school for a week or two?
