When do you honestly think it will happen? And when do you want it to happen?!

With respect, I think leave for teachers is the least of our worries at the moment. If they have to work through their summer holidays to keep NHS staff at work, then so be it.

It's not like many teachers are doing much as it is anyway.

Oaktree55 · 01/04/2020 17:39

September then back 1/3 off 2/3 till vaccine which realistically is Autumn 2021. Don’t count on much schooling till a vaccine.

Jadey16 · 01/04/2020 17:40

I think September. I hope they don’t cancel the summer holidays, it’s not like the kids have been out doing the fun things they would usually do in summer, like visit the beach, see friends etc

CallmeAngelina · 01/04/2020 17:41

As a teacher, I REALLY want to get back after May half term, for so many reasons (not least of which is how much more difficult it is to teach/set work remotely), but I don't actually hold out much hope.

Vynalbob · 01/04/2020 17:46

Think Jan 2021,,,,,Hope September 2020

Lives matter - - - - broadband should be universally accessible

Lianepl · 01/04/2020 17:47

It will be September at the very earliest. They will not cancel the summer holiday: teachers are still teaching at the moment.

Matildasmum13 · 01/04/2020 17:48

All teachers at my school are working. It’s actually harder online, in some ways.

My own 3. children have to register and contribute to every lesson and teachers are still planning and marking all the work, having meetings etc...

I’ve heard September is the aim. Too dangerous health wise before, and too dangerous economy wise to risk staying off longer than September.

teachpaint · 01/04/2020 17:49

The unions would be up in arms if summer hols were cancelled somehow.

Would it be possible for the govt to pass legislation to cancel them? Either way I think many of my colleagues would strike.

I’m hoping we go back as soon as is safe, ideally no later than after May half term. I miss the kids, esp my exam classes and tutor group! But we also need to get them back on track asap, especially if we’re headed for another winter peak, resulting in more school closures.

On that note, does anyone think we’ll close down again in winter? I hope this is all over soon.

rachaelclaire1 · 01/04/2020 17:49

Not until September or possible October half term

MyWitzEnd · 01/04/2020 17:51

@bewareoftheblob not true. We are salaried for 12 months. School can ask us to work in August. Wouldnt go down well though!

CharlotteLouiseOwen · 01/04/2020 17:52

Initially I thought in June after the Whit half-term. I wouldn't plan for it to be before September.

refraction · 01/04/2020 17:55

bewareoftheblob not true. We are salaried for 12 months. School can ask us to work in August. Wouldnt go down well though!

We aren't, its just divided that way.

Jogonandshutup · 01/04/2020 17:56

Do you really think that teachers are having a ‘holiday’ right now StormyClouds they’d rather be at work and have a proper ‘jolly’ during the Easter and Summer holidays. It would be so cruel to make them go back to work July/August when they have been under lockdown too.

Usernamerequired · 01/04/2020 17:58

Most likely to be September. Exams like GCSEs and A-Levels aren’t even being held so schools won’t be open for them

Poliann · 01/04/2020 17:59

I think September.

MaterEstIratus · 01/04/2020 18:01

@Makeitgoaway - Most teachers aren't working full time atm.

Aren’t we? I’m doing it wrong then. What with rewriting and setting lessons, supporting students online, marking, writing reports in lieu of parents evenings, using supposed “gain time” for planning next years GCSE SOW I’m doing more hours than I would at school. I’m not counting the primary teaching on the side for my own children.

exaltedwombat · 01/04/2020 18:01

When restrictions are lifted, we have to get the economy going again. Children to the fields for a month or two. Maybe a few openings for chimney sweeps?

Wheresthebeach · 01/04/2020 18:02

Email today from school saying they are planning for Sept.

DBML · 01/04/2020 18:06

I’d quit before I worked through Jul/Aug.

I’m happy to give up my Easter hols and May half-term to support the NHS. I’m happy to work additional weekends at the moment. I’m happy to work these three extra weeks/days unpaid, because it’s for the greater good...but if the country is starting to get back together enough that schools could reopen in the summer hols, they can sod off.

I’m knackered! Teaching remotely is a nightmare. An absolute nightmare. I’d rather be in school any day of the week. I miss my students. I’m worried for some of my students. I want a chat and a cuppa with my colleagues. But, I also need my hard earned, unpaid summer holiday.

Fwiw I am hoping for a return around the May half-term. I’d love to be back at least for the last 7 weeks of school.

Sierra259 · 01/04/2020 18:08

I also think realistically September, though I think it would be nice for them to get 2-3 weeks in before the summer holidays. Bit pointless from a learning pov, but just to touch base with normality somwhat before the long summer holiday. Not overly hopeful though!

mylifestory · 01/04/2020 18:08

I dont get all this talk of teachers not being happy if they have to work in the summer hols etc, think of the nhs and what they are doing for everyone. teachers chippingmin for the country like them wdnt really be a big ask

dorey69 · 01/04/2020 18:10

At least till June I think. This virus won’t just disappear unfortunately

teachpaint · 01/04/2020 18:12

@mylifestory
But won’t the NHS workers get their time back, we won’t.

Look, personally I would happily come in over summer, but I don’t have little children who need me attending to them, my DH will be working, as will all my non-teacher friends, plus it doesn’t look like I’ll be going abroad this summer! So I would be fine with it. But it isn’t fair on those teachers with dependents etc. It’s just not.

Plus the unions wouldn’t allow it, it’s not up to individuals. It is about what is fair and right for the profession

1forsorrow · 01/04/2020 18:15

nhs are getting paid for their working hours, well that is what I have been told by someone in the nhs. Apparently some are getting alot of money and quite right too. I don't think anyone has offered the teachers any money for giving up easter holidays.

DBML · 01/04/2020 18:15

@mylifestory

It would be a huge ask!

  1. NHS workers are being paid for all of the time they work. Teachers are already working additional days during the holidays and some on weekends for FREE!
  1. NHS workers when this is all over, can apply for their leave that was missed. Teachers would have to just give up another 6 weeks for FREE with no chance of getting that time back.

I’m working my ass off atm. But, because I’m not in school, people think I’m sat at home having a jolly. Do you really think the councils would just send us home fully paid to do nothing? My workload right now is frankly ridiculous.
