For those asking about bed capacity and surge, my hospital has 'surged' into a second critical care, although this is only 2 more patients than usual. We could have accommodated these on the existing unit except we are segregating covid and non covid. We have had a number of Covid patients die and none have been well enough to discharge. People like me I'm sure will be happy to talk about their settings on an anonymous forum. Things are not that bad yet but they are expected to get very severe with the peak happening in two weeks.

Summer holidays for private school dc can go on for 8 weeks.
This won't harm anyone's brain except those vulnerable dc who suffer at home which will be horrendous.

But general normal loving family homes where dc have access to stimulation will be absolutely fine! To be honest I'd worry more if my dc couldn't cope with this... It's just a summer holiday with work!

School sent letter out that all dc are in the very same boat and all teachers will be going back over the curriculum... No worries!

One dc has been put on the sen register, recently. We are not stressing, eeking out flash cards here and there, little bits of doodle maths, reading... History projects... Little bits here and there...

But it's what I've always done... In fact my dc seem to come on more when I can do ten mins a day with them in summer...

I'm very happy schools closed, I wish they had closed much earlier and I hope they only open when it's very very safe.

Social aspect is tricky... Esp for younger ones..

Re: nightingale, I wonder how it will be heated? Looks really cold!

Also, what about the staff milling around in there, anyone could have it.. Spreading it, touching beds etc...

Katie2017 · 01/04/2020 22:20

On Sky news they just showed photos of some of the poor souls lost to this and I noticed they had a photo of the 21 year old woman who later turned out not to be from Covid? Is there an update on her and she is confirmed now as having had it or did Sky just make an error there?

MurrayTheMonk · 01/04/2020 22:24

One of my staff just found out-when he was on shift with me-that his Aunt died-of covid-on her own in hospital this evening. She wasn't that old-late 40's he said and had just had a bit of light asthma.
It's too awful for words.

HeIenaDove · 01/04/2020 22:26

I've been saying for WEEKS AND WEEKS that testing is the way to beat this virus". Now has he really

The fucking gaslighting fuckwit.

TwentyViginti · 01/04/2020 22:36

The Guardian online has put up the front pages of tomorrow's papers. Headlines even in the pro Tory ones are far from complimentary about the Government and the testing fiasco.

The fucking gaslighting fuckwit
Yes.

Freshairimportanttoo · 01/04/2020 22:38

Maybe Boris has been saying it but his science modelers have said there is not evidence for it.

Somelady · 01/04/2020 22:39

I agree with that that teaching your own child rather than them being in class is much more effective. I think the reason they spend so much time at school is because of them being in a group and also for child care

FannyCann · 01/04/2020 22:46

More Cheltenham Festival infections including Andrew Parker Bowles.

Camilla Parker Bowles's ex-husband has coronavirus

Is there a shelf life for samples taken? I mean before their able to get tested due to testing/lad backlogs.

Random18 · 01/04/2020 23:03

Can I ask possibly a silly question about NHS testing (if it ever happens properly).

What will the criteria be for testing.

They mention testing workers which they should be doing. And if they are symptomatic then fine. That's a worthwhile thing to do.

But if your child is sick for instance, would it still be the NHS worker that is tested?

Or would they test the child to see if its CV?

Just thinking back to my time with preschool children. We would have been self isolating every single week as my youngest had a temperature every other week.

FannyCann · 01/04/2020 23:23

It's not a silly question Random18 I don't understand it either. If they test people who have symptoms then they will know if they definitely have it and be able to plan for their return to work. Bearing in mind the course of the illness seems to be very variable and unpredictable. Many people on threads here for instance report feeling better after about a week before having a sudden relapse feeling much worse, and then having an extended post viral period of feeling very tired and generally nowhere near fit to return to working at full pelt. So they will know the person is genuinely off sick with the virus. But they'll just have to wait and see as regards return to work.
People who are self isolating with, say a family member who is unwell can be tested and found to be clear, and therefore able to return to work. Except their family member is still unwell and potentially a source of infection. I think the family member will be tested as well. So if they are positive surely the Screen negative NHS worker will still have to stay at home for the necessary period of time.

I think they'll end up having to repeatedly screen staff who test negative as they will continue to be exposed to it and need another test won't they?

StarbucksSmarterSister · 02/04/2020 01:22

I've been saying for WEEKS AND WEEKS that testing is the way to beat this virus". Now has he really

Someone (can't remember who) said "Boris waits to see which way the crowd is going then pushes his way to the front and shouts 'everyone follow me' '". I'd say this is a good example of that.

Somelady · 02/04/2020 02:22

Persistent infection. Another good reason not to have let it spread.

Noideareally2 · 02/04/2020 06:00

I will admit I am struggling with home schooling my 6 year old.all she wants to do is watch cartoons, and as I'm working she does get hours of them.. dare I say most days? I think I need to cut it back. I feel guilty. She has no other adults or children to interact with so it's hard. She does have toys, books etc. We have one smallish room, and a garden. She is safe, but I don't want her childhood to be just staring at a screen.

woodencoffeetable · 02/04/2020 06:15

noidea
my dc get their school lessons via an app. which means they spend 4 hours a day staring at the screen.
plus they talk to their friends vial video app as well. plus they play games on a console.
it can't be helped sometimes...

we try to break it up - 10 min of exercise between lessons, half an hour walk at lunchtime, a bit of rope skipping in the evening.

boldlygoingsomewhere · 02/04/2020 06:51

noidea, it’s similar for us. One 6 year old in a small house with small garden. We’ve been spending a couple of hours a day on ‘school’ stuff - reading, maths, spellings, writing. The topic related work is quite open-ended and creative anyway so she’s happy to do that in the afternoon. There has been a fair amount of Lego model building!
I’m not worrying too much about the tv viewing as I do think she needs the downtime. The situation has been playing on her mind and curling up on the sofa with a Disney film is no bad thing.

MarshaBradyo · 02/04/2020 07:43

Lots of criticism in MSM papers re tests and govt in general.

I’ve now been shielding for 14 days (with my family) does this mean we’re probably going to be ok now if we’ve passed the 14 day point without symptoms

Have you actually had it?

Problem is that if one family member has it on day 1, and passes it to family member two who has a long incubation period of say 10 days and then they pass it to next family member who has a long incubation period of tens days you aren't clear by 14 days.

This is one of the reasons you still get more cases after lockdown.

It's also true that this 14 day thing is lulling people into a false sense of security as they think they are clear, drive to grandma's and bingo she gets it. Last night they were reporting an uptick in travel and I wonder if this is what's happening...

So no after 14 days I'd still be steering well clear of those particularly vulnerable.

AliciaWhiskers · 02/04/2020 08:02

@Random18 they would test the person with symptoms. If it’s not CV then the others don’t need to self isolate. I’m an nhs worker and this was emailed yesterday.

TheCanterburyWhales · 02/04/2020 08:03

Lessons are tough. We have now been doing video lessons since lockdown began. I didn't think initially it was hard 4 hours a morning in video conference with my classes (DD doing the same in another room) but it's the intensity of it. For everyone. It takes much longer to do everything, both for the kids working on screen and us marking on screen.
The sooner it finishes....
