@Coquohvan

Believe what you want to believe. I was citing an article in the Lancet, which includes information from the WHO. Worldometers is just a random tracking site.

I don’t even know what you mean by “China’s numbers listed absurdly low”. If you mean their overall cases, sure, probably. But their definitions of mild/moderate, severe, and critical seem clear.

Somelady · 31/03/2020 20:24

Is anyone wearing glasses/ goggles outside?

MarshaBradyo · 31/03/2020 20:28

I wear glasses anyway, but I’m kind of glad I do.

I just had a thought I hope Boris Johnson is actually not too ill. Not sure if I’ve missed any news on how he is.

Freshairimportanttoo · 31/03/2020 20:30

We've had the wrong stragety from the the very start which was total inertia.

Phe is negligent.

No ppe, constant cross contamination.... Go into hospital clear... Your gonna catch it... Gross negligence all round.. Normally id expect staff to strike but what can you do?

SansaSnark · 31/03/2020 20:32

@somelady only because I need them to see. I think unless you are in an at risk group, or you touch your eyes as a habit there's probably not much benefit.

SansaSnark · 31/03/2020 20:33

After all of this is over, there needs to be an inquiry into the PHE/government response to all of this.

IMO, their first mistake was telling schools it was fine to have students/teachers who'd been on Italian ski trips back in.

A 13-year-old boy has died in a London hospital after testing positive for the coronavirus, Sky News are reporting.

Ismail Mohamed Abdulwahab died at Kings College Hospital on Monday.

In a statement, Kings College Hospital told Sky News: "Sadly, a 13-year old boy who tested positive for COVID-19 has passed away, and our thoughts and condolences are with the family at this time.

"The death has been referred to the coroner and no further comment will be made."

An appeal on a GoFundMe page, set up by Madinah College, said: "It is with great sadness to announce that the younger brother of one of our teachers at Madinah College has sadly passed away this morning (Monday 30 March 2020) due to being infected with COVID-19.

"Ismail was only 13 years old without any pre-existing health conditions and sadly he died without any family members close by due to the highly infectious nature of COVID-19."

I was shocked schools were allowed to go. I need milk and am scared to go to the shop.

MarshaBradyo · 31/03/2020 20:40

That is so sad about the 13 year old boy, no underlying conditions must be extremely rare. Poor family Sad

Somelady · 31/03/2020 20:43

This is how things were before antibiotics

SabineSchmetterling · 31/03/2020 20:45

The thought of a 13 year old dying alone, without his parents by his side, is utterly horrifying. I can’t even imagine how traumatic that would be for his poor parents. Sad

Newbeginnings2 · 31/03/2020 20:46

That is terrible, how can they not let the parents be with him at that time, is that also due to lack of PPE?

MarshaBradyo · 31/03/2020 20:46

Oh no he might not have been alone Sad I couldn’t bear that

MarshaBradyo · 31/03/2020 20:47

Oh I missed that part argh

This was from today for who was asking about Boris. He's not looking well but then if he's not resting I'm not surprised. His age, gender and BMI puts him at risk of a longer recovery.

SansaSnark · 31/03/2020 20:53

A 13yo boy dying from this alone is incredibly tragic. This is my fear if schools go back too soon. The death rate for 11-19yos is about 0.1% from Chinese figures. That's 2 kids at every large secondary, and that would be heartbreaking for school communities.

But this is what would have happened if it was allowed to run through the population with no measures.

Delatron · 31/03/2020 20:54

Agree the biggest mistake the government made initially was not asking every single person who came back from north Italy after half term to self quarantine for 14 days. It was only ‘if they displayed symptoms’. Knowing full well there is up to a 14 day incubation period and that you can infect before you show symptoms.

That surgeon who went straight back to work in the hospital and then later found out he had the virus. After performing many operations. We were so lapse.

MarshaBradyo · 31/03/2020 20:55

I cannot see people accepting schools back before it’s safer. For teachers and students.

We put up with the lag stopping which was mayhem in the end with staff absence but it’s another thing to make people go back.

MarshaBradyo · 31/03/2020 20:55

I don’t know why we were so lax. It wasn’t a hard measure back then.

EmeraldShamrock · 31/03/2020 20:56

@defthand 😢 Poor boy. This is a nightmare. I assumed the DC would be safe.

MarshaBradyo · 31/03/2020 20:56

Making me feel stressed just knowing it happened.

Aragog · 31/03/2020 20:57

I'm surprised he didn't have someone with him. FIL is dying. Even before his CV test came back negative MIL had been told they'd be able to arrange for her to visit if it became imminent.
Unless they just couldn't get there in time or others in the family had symptoms. Visiting on most wards have been stopped and, where it is available, it's an hour maximum a day. But there are exemptions.

SansaSnark · 31/03/2020 20:59

@Delatron There were schools local to me with ski-trips that went to Northern Italy. Initially, the advice for everyone was "stay home" and within about two days that was reversed with no real explanation (apologies if you know this already). I think it may have been to do with staffing numbers in schools. Many schools had international trips go ahead after half term. They were incredibly lax with tightening up the travel advice about Italy as well.

@MarshaBradyo I have seen threads here today that want schools to go back as soon as possible "because the economy won't cope with schools being closed until September" and "there's no risk to children". Unfortunately some people really still haven't got their heads around this yet. I am worried that if there is too much public pressure, schools will be made to re-open early and there will be deaths as a result.

Coquohvan · 31/03/2020 20:59

@defthand
I don’t even know what you mean by “China’s numbers listed absurdly low”. If you mean their overall cases, sure, probably. But their definitions of mild/moderate, severe, and critical seem clear.

Now your being silly, every country is shown as their total cases, they are then broken down into sections. Therefore I say again, I do not believe China’s numbers They are absurdly low.
Surely you can understand that.

MarshaBradyo · 31/03/2020 21:00

Me too Sansa. I worry it will be too soon not late.
