If CV turns out to be less deadly than flu...

do you think you will still feel the restrictions were worth it?

Just asking out of curiosity really.

But it isn't. So its a stupid question. Mortality rate in italy is running at circa 10% according to the news this morning.

Rate in general is circa 4.7%

TheDailyCarbuncle · 30/03/2020 14:12

No it's not. The mortality rate is based off the number of people tested, no the number of people actually infected. It is entirely possible that flu is 5-10 times more deadly than CV.

OP posts:
esjee · 30/03/2020 14:12

It's definitely not less deadly than flu. Not a single report or statistic anywhere suggests thst.

TheDailyCarbuncle · 30/03/2020 14:13

Bear in mind that anywhere between 200,000 and 650,000 people die of flu worldwide each year.

Which it wont! 50% of thise who develop lung problems and require ventilating will die

TheDailyCarbuncle · 30/03/2020 14:14

Plenty of reports and statistics suggest it. Germany is reporting a 0.1% fatality rate, which is about the same as flu, but that's based on incomplete testing.

NuffSaidSam · 30/03/2020 14:14

Well, no.

If it turned out all the figures were wrong and actually loads of people weren't dying and the NHS wasn't at risk of being overwhelmed....then the current measures would be unnecessary.

Hindsight is 20/20 and all that.

esjee · 30/03/2020 14:14

Oh not this bollocks again. Is there sny point in having the same silly debates. Believe what uou wsnt, but put us out of our misery and do it offlime.

It actually isn't. The 2 are not comparable, there is no vaccine, no immunity to COVID-19, and we know sod all about it.

PertEllaTitsahoy · 30/03/2020 14:15

If the restrictions prevent loads of people dying would it have been worth it..?

Umm.... yes.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 30/03/2020 14:15

We are in no way in a position yet to acurately calculate the mortality rate. how many ventilators have we needed for flu in the last ten years?

TheDailyCarbuncle · 30/03/2020 14:16

23,000 people have died of flu in America this year so far in the flu season.

OP posts:
starlightgazers · 30/03/2020 14:16

The WHO say the death rate is 3.4%

I've a feeling that will rise though given the rates seen in Italy and Spain.

tegucigalpa13 · 30/03/2020 14:17

Most vulnerable people never get flu because they receive a vaccination against it. Most other people have a degree of immunity against influenza viruses which offers some protection. Nevertheless 1000s die every year.

There is no vaccine against Covid 19. And no-one has any degree of immunity against corona viruses (except maybe those who had Sars/swine flu). So even if the number of deaths per 1000 infected is the same as seasonal flu, there are going to be millions more who get the virus. So overall death rates will be much much higher. So it will not turn out to be less deadly than flu.

esjee · 30/03/2020 14:17

I think repetitive nonsense threads should be closed. This debate sowing discontent with no factual basis isn't required 10 times per day.

TheDailyCarbuncle · 30/03/2020 14:17

The death rate is based on number of people tested not number of people infected

FlibbertyGiblets · 30/03/2020 14:18

I won't be upset or offended if the figures turn out so.

HTH

I find it impossible to look at Spain and Italy and think, oh ffs it’s just the flu everyone needs to calm down, tbh.
I also find it impossible to see reports of front line staff dying from it and think ‘well, eggs gonna be on everyone’s face when they realise it was nowt to worry about!’
But who knows, maybe in a few months it will seems like the biggest, global over reaction if all time.

Discussing facts and figures is not 'sowing discontent' @esjee. You are free to leave the thread.

Source?

TheDailyCarbuncle · 30/03/2020 14:19

No @EmAndes, I'm repeating what the WHO have said.

Marieo · 30/03/2020 14:20

This argument is stupid. We have vaccinations for flu, and because they have been around for ages and due to the nature of them, most of us have a level of immunity to it; and yes still lots of people die annually. Now imagine if we didn't have vaccines or any immunity etc, of course the numbers will be higher and we would want to do what we can until there is a vaccine etc. Pandemics like Spanish flu weren't great either.
