Could this be the end of the Royal family?

I don't mean if they die of the virus...

But there's nothing like a lockdown to really highlight inequality. I saw an article yesterday about Kate + William "isolating" at Anmer Hall, having done a photoshoot where they pretend to be on the telephone and writing ("working").

I think if people are going to have to spend months at home, in small flats with kids, still going out to work or trying to WFH, queueing for supermarkets with empty shelves......that could definitely breed some discontent. Or if people catch it and have to be treated in makeshift hospitals, not getting an ambulance until they're struggling to breathe, while the RF can be whisked away to a private hospital for treatment. I've already seen a lot of comments along the lines of "why don't they offer up their many palaces to be used as hospitals, rather than doing newspaper articles".

Opinions?

If I were one of those who genuinely merited their award I would be pretty upset at human dregs like Savile being granted the same.

HappyHammy · 01/04/2020 13:40

Its time for them to help the country instead of sitting on their backsides. They could ask their many "servants" to sew scrubs from sheets,donate food, offer their vehicles to essential staff, offer rooms to essential staff, get back to flying helicopters which Fergie is also qualified to do. I imagine they have a supply of emergency medical and bio equipment which others could use.

Livingtothefull · 01/04/2020 13:43

I agree that supporters of the Monarchy are living in the past. They ascribe benign and generous motives to the Royal Family when all the evidence suggests the opposite. All the evidence indicates that they are far better at collecting money from us than giving anything back.

BTW if royal patronage of charities was so invaluable, then you would expect this nation to be the most generous charity donors in the world - but we rank below other countries such as the US and Ireland (both republics). Still it makes a change from the equally flimsy 'Monarchy is good for tourism' which evidently no longer applies.

Wolfgirrl · 01/04/2020 13:49

Does anyone else think the news about William wanting to join air ambulance again are just a bit of lip service? That the masses will think by reading this he has actually DONE it and he can go back to putting his feet up?

I really cant see another article in a week showing him jumping in a helicopter with his uniform on.

And it also puts paid to the protests on here that his licence has lapsed, etc..

Livingtothefull · 01/04/2020 14:04

That could very well be the case that the news about William 'wanting' to get back to air ambulance work was purely to fob us off.

I think that a lot of what passes for news about RF members consists of snapshots and snippets designed to give the public the general impression they are 'busy'; hence the photoshoot in the original op showing them supposedly 'at work'.

Lifeisabeach09 · 01/04/2020 14:05

@Mamamia456, comparing, nah. The PM does far more for his tax-funded income. Grin

Mamamia456 · 01/04/2020 14:14

Wolfgirrl - You've made a lot of assumptions about people there.

Mamamia456 · 01/04/2020 14:15

Lifesabeach - Actually I do think that Boris is doing a good job given the circumstances.

Wolfgirrl · 01/04/2020 14:19

@mamamia465

Yes I have. Do you think I will be proved wrong?

Mamamia456 · 01/04/2020 14:35

Wolfgirrl - I wasn't talking about the royal family.

eddiemairswife · 01/04/2020 14:37

The trouble with these long threads is that people tend to get into arguments, and also repeat what many others have said before.

With each child having its own nanny, I can't help wondering if, when they quarrel or fight, the nannies get involved and take 'their' child's side.

Wolfgirrl · 01/04/2020 14:39

@Mamamia456 what then?

Wolfgirrl · 01/04/2020 14:41

PC has just released a short speech, so I guess that's his work over for another few weeks.

Guess what? No offer of help in any form other than 'my heart goes out to you' blah blah.

Another bit of PR rubbish to see them through the pandemic. Maybe If we are very good subjects we will get a video of Camilla clapping..?

quiteathome · 01/04/2020 15:22

They really don't have a clue. Most of us have to worry about whether we will have jobs and can pay the mortgage after this.

I find it incredibly insulting to all of us that they can nob around pretending to work and care whilst not having to worry about whether they will lose their homes, jobs and livlihoods once the pandemic is over.

I think it is about time they disappeared, I can't see how royalty is at all relevent anymore.

MarshaBradyo · 01/04/2020 15:24

They are just PR fluff and this pandemic highlights that they are an anachronism.

I’d call it time but I think they’ll survive.

eggshellgreen · 01/04/2020 15:40

I think Harry helped seal the deal if it is. I don't really care but I do think it will be odd for U.K. to not have a royal family.

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 01/04/2020 18:17

I don’t recognise knighthoods. The whole idea is ludicrous. I’d admire anyone who refused one

It wasn't a knighthood obviously but I refused an OBE. I'm very proud of myself 😆

Lovely to hear Prince Charles donating such a big sum of his own money to help buy PPE for the NHS.....oh wait.....I must have dreamed that bit

UYScuti · 01/04/2020 18:26

maybe Charlie'll give the nurses a discount on his posh biscuits?

audreysview · 01/04/2020 18:37

How can Charkes be expected to help out. He’s only got just under £324 million. 🤔

Clavinova · 01/04/2020 18:39

Two threads!! Grin

Prince Charles has gone up in my estimation so much since these threads were started.

Another fan;

"His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales is the recipient of The GCC Global Leader of Change Award, 2017, for his outstanding contribution to global environmental preservation and protection and for his passionate vision for a better future for humanity."

"The inaugural GCC Global Leaders of Change Awards, established in 2015, recognised transformational business leadership in ethical and sustainable development, during the UN Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris in December 2015."

"Eco-Age recognised His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales’ leadership, both nationally and globally and his compassion for people and planet. Among the principal achievements Eco-Age highlighted were:"

"The establishment of ‘The Prince of Wales’s Charitable Foundation’ in 1979 and ‘The Prince’s Trust’, the UK’s largest youth charity, offering a beacon of hope and practical help to those disadvantaged and often forgotten in our societies."

"Changing the narrative internationally on the defining issues of our day such as rainforest preservation and protection, bio-diversity and wildlife preservation, stressing the importance of natural capital."

"The founding of ‘Business in the Community’, a group of not-for-profit organisations of which he is President, pushing the agenda on areas such as responsible business and enterprise, global sustainability and rural affairs."

"The launch of ‘The Campaign for Wool’ in 2010, to educate consumers on the benefits of wool internationally and help to support and grow the wool industry, in partnership with the world’s largest wool organisations and producers. His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales innate understanding that wool is completely natural, sustainable and recyclable, had until his intervention been mostly forgotten."

"Livia Firth, Founder and Creative Director of Eco-Age, said: “I am delighted we had an opportunity to recognise a statesman who has truly made a difference to many people’s lives through his work and given us insights to not just the issues, but solutions that can add value to people and planet. His establishment of the Prince’s Trust alone is formidable and I have huge respect for someone who is the highest example of what at Eco-Age we call an active citizen”.

MarshaBradyo · 01/04/2020 18:41

Charles did come out of The Crown well ;

Heygirlheyboy · 01/04/2020 20:23

Surely 'the children' don't have a nanny each?! As a non-English poster, I can say the Royal Family and its extravagances look absolutely crazy, irrelevant and tone deaf in the current climate. It is unjustifiable from the outside looking in, just why?

Clavinova · 01/04/2020 20:28

Heygirlheyboy

But you live in Ireland - the Irish head of state appears to cost more per capita than the royal family.

Heygirlheyboy · 01/04/2020 20:41

I would be very surprised Clavinova but the difference is his residence belongs to the state and he is there for the duration of his presidency only. He has got to his position by merit/the people's vote, he has earned his place and will leave once a new president is voted in. Can't you see the difference and how did you know I was in Ireland? Hmm He's adored here, and elsewhere, but the big thing is, no resentment for the utter luxury a family lives in through no merit of their own.

Heygirlheyboy · 01/04/2020 20:50

He also has regular gatherings in his residence, and takes a lower salary than entitled to. I think he's on around 200k per annum.. your Royals would sniff at that I'm sure!
