Our human rights have been taken away

Soph7777 · 29/03/2020 23:40

I know it's for a good cause.

I know it's to save lives.

But our basic human rights have been taken from under us, in the short space of a week.

I find this part most of all the scariest.

I'm really struggling mentally with government control to this extent.

How long can this last before people lose their minds and rebel?

Fa - 'you can't do a thing about the death toll'

This is wrong. We are helping reduce the death toll by staying at home.

Yesterdayforgotten · 30/03/2020 13:00

Unfortunately that is the case, they make me so mad Angry

grindergirl · 30/03/2020 13:04

Interesting how debate and questioning about human rights gets stifled by all the nanny-knows-best types on here. No doubt it's a response to their own fears. But those who don't picture future possibilities and subsequent government responses will be ill-prepared if worse comes to worst. For example, shouldn't there be public debate on who gets the last ventilators and thus has a chance to the right to life? I do agree with the lockdown, but that shouldn't stop us thinking about all aspects of human rights and how fragile they are. I have little faith in governments of any stripe. I too live in Ireland and our govt were so concerned about the damage to the economy and tourism, they allowed dozens of flights in from Italy despite knowing how bad the situation already was over there. No testing at the airport either. They certainly weren't thinking about the well-being of the many earlier this month. Now they confine us to only walking within 2 kms of our homes. In my case, that would mean trudging round an estate or going into town. The vast acres of a Forest Park are only 4 kms from my home. But going there is now off-limits. 2 kms is an arbitrary figure plucked from thin air and the reasoning behind it should be questioned rather than meekly accepted

How does someone look like they've been to see their boyfriend?

I think I've got to go out later to collect a prescription, it was due on Friday but fortunately I have a few days spare, they promised it would be here this morning but no sign. I wonder if anyone will be curtain twitching as the packet of tablets will be in my pocket so it will look like I haven't been out for anything essential. I hope no one thinks I've been out to see my (imaginary) boyfriend, particularly my husband.

Freshairimportanttoo · 30/03/2020 13:06

Sunshine I agree
I'm very happy to be in lock down but I feel everything has been to little too late.

We should be looking to pandemic expertise teams from Taiwan and South Korea, Singapore and their responses.

Be swifter at the start, don't wait and encourage it to take hold. Close airports, schools, business, much sooner. Track and trace instantly with help of phone data. Much more effort to pin things down.

Short and swift.
Our slow, trundling response is what are are now paying for.

cornishdreams1 · 30/03/2020 13:07

Every day that we stay at home, we are reducing the death toll. Every single day is making a difference. It is buying time for the new hospitals to be finished, the ventilators to arrive, for the current patients to get better and go home, and to keep our hospitals from overflowing with very sick and dying. Every day that we manage this, we are step closer to getting some proper control over the spread, and a day closer to a revised version of normality.

Every single day we stay at home we keep ourselves safe, our children safe and those that are really at risk. This is a colossal sacrifice of freedom, but it is worthwhile if only to ensure that everyone gets the care they need and deserve when it is their turn, to give each and every one of us the chance of survival.

Or we could cancel the lockdown and die in the streets, in the supermarkets and on trollies in hospital corridors.

Freshairimportanttoo · 30/03/2020 13:09

I can't see how any economy moves have been made by letting flights from Italy in, not quarantining families who went skiing because of course now, what's happening is a billion times worse for the economy

Marmite17 · 30/03/2020 13:09

This thread has made me really angry. The Op IS following all the rules, finding it difficult and looking on here for support. She is describing feelings not actions and there are 27 pages of mostly negative/ accusing comments to make her feel worse
It is easy to be sanctimonious if your situation hasn't changed too much and you have the important things :a supportive family/friends.
I don't know the Ops situation. but would bet she feels much worse now.
Disgusted by the mob mentality some people have shown. Shame on you. We should be supporting each other not all piling in to drag one person down.

Frangipanini · 30/03/2020 13:10

I think that the person with the least HR right now are those who are being denied ventilators, or those in hospital being denied basic human contact or empathy as people have to attend to them in full PPE gear. Those who cannot see or kiss their loved ones goodbye or may be denied a funeral with anyone there to pay their respects. All those lying in hospital worrying if they are gong to die alone.

All things we could stop happening if we all wound our neck in about our HR being denied not being able to go out for our 2nd walk.

Freshairimportanttoo · 30/03/2020 13:11

Cornish, families to sensibly get fresh air and get out is part of keeping everyone well.

I'm personally all for lock down but we should have done this when Italy kicked off straight after half term and we would be a damn site safer had we got a grip of things then than sloppily letting things slide out of control.

Yesterdayforgotten · 30/03/2020 13:12

@1forsorrow because this neighbour has form for it; the boyfriend was staying with her only going home the night of the lockdown, they weren't practicing social distancing and since the lockdown there have been other instances too. Oh and this person is young and healthy and I know some things can be hidden but no prescription in hand. Curtain twitching is happening yes as i was cleaning the inside of my windows as lets face it not much else to do if we wish to actually follow the government advice!

1forsorrow · 30/03/2020 13:12

I think the people in hospital now probably got sick before the lockdown, maybe cancelling the Cheltenham Festival or Crufts would have saved them.

Freshairimportanttoo · 30/03/2020 13:13

Because a second walk is neither here nor there and no amount of arguing will convince me that Mr Jones walking twice around the block, not seeing anyone will do bugger all to anyone in a negative way.

BigChocFrenzy · 30/03/2020 13:13

"Once people get that 120000 people can't control 66m people the lockdown is over."

People aren't as stupid as you seem to think
Everyone knew from the start that control could only be voluntary and nearly all have consented to it

  • about 95% vs 3% acvording to the opinion polls
1forsorrow · 30/03/2020 13:14

So basically you have no idea if she has been to see her boyfriend, collect a prescription for her granny or anything else. Curtain twitching is a nasty habit.

Yesterdayforgotten · 30/03/2020 13:15

Oh and forsorrw her boyfriend isnt imaginary and dont think tablets would fit in pair of leggins but I could be wrong but personally I find that theory less likely in this situation considering all the facts.

EmpressoftheMundane · 30/03/2020 13:15

Agree completely sunshine.

The news media are just a conduit for government info. Not much investigation or analysis and not much debate.

1forsorrow · 30/03/2020 13:16

You really should volunteer to be judge jury and executioner Yesterday. You've really missed your vocation.

FaFoutis · 30/03/2020 13:16

People are staying at home. Most people just do it and get on with it. If you feel the need to go on about your efforts (what efforts really?) you should perhaps question that.

Agreed Marmite. Where are people in difficult situations going to go for support, kindness and sanity if the internet is full of nasty bastards?

cornishdreams1 · 30/03/2020 13:17

marmite that is unfair comment in the main, we have offered support and advice, pages and pages back, she has been guided to mental health help, voluntary or paid work. Lots of people have been very understanding, we ALL feel the pain of this.

However, we can not possibly agree with her sentiments that our human rights are more important than the lives of the people dying in our hospitals right now, when we have children on ventilators and thousands of lives are being lost.
Do you not see how very damaging it is if everyone agreed that the op was right?

Of course we need to keep people safe, and we do that by staying at home, if we are struggling we seek help.

If op feels bad then maybe she needs to look at the true suffering taking place, really, these self indulgent posts about human rights do not help anyone, least of all op.

1forsorrow · 30/03/2020 13:17

If all she's wearing is a pair of leggings I'm sure the police would be very interested.

Yesterdayforgotten · 30/03/2020 13:17

1forsorrow continue living in your little fantasy bubble, I know my own neighbours not you. If you want to think somebody is going to do those things when they are generally disrespectful during normal times than go ahead!

OchAyeThaNoo · 30/03/2020 13:17

Watched an old lady neighbour today who regularly meets up with another old lady who's family, in turn, regularly visits her (post lockdown), come out of her friends house and drive away together.

Their "rebellion" could kill them right now.
She has a lot of health conditions (which makes her very high risk) too but is perfectly able to get around and get her own shopping or use the local volunteers and shops who will deliver safely from a distance.
There are coronavirus cases in the village.

Some people need their human rights taken from them because they're fucking stupid. No wonder ol' Boris is having to send out personal letters. Apparently the tv media coverage, newspapers, social media and internet doesn't seem to be enough.

Yesterdayforgotten · 30/03/2020 13:18

1forsorrow why do you want to know what she is wearing? Do ou require a full description so you can try fit some tablets into a pocket somewhere?

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 30/03/2020 13:18

OP : I am following all the rules and I understand why they are in place, but I'm struggling with them and it's affecting my MH.

(Frothing, self righteous) PP's : you selfish, pathetic poor excuse of a human being. Put up and shut up!
