Stricter lockdown coming?

What might a stricter lockdown look like? Will we get to a point where we can't go out to exercise at all? Or is it more likely we'll only be able to go shopping once a week?

OP posts:

Tellit- I know, it's weird. I think it's still possible of course as a self employed person after a couple of weeks of lockdown he may already be at breaking point poor bloke.
The govt sanctioned money last night which can be applied for online from the 31st so things are moving to help the really desperate.

TheCanterburyWhales · 29/03/2020 20:28

Meant to add, not means tested or anything, just a payment for all self- employed or what we call co.co.co contracts which the govt have said will be paid by 15/4.

bigchris · 29/03/2020 20:47

There's postal workers ie royal mail delivering Boris mail, and then there are Amazon delivering dvds, books , hair dye etc Grin

AnyFucker · 29/03/2020 20:50

We had a warning of stricter measures at the press conference today

So I reckon stricter lockdown in 5-7 days

ragged · 29/03/2020 21:09

How does super strict measures work if you've volunteered to be part of the NHS army that might drive folk to medical appointments or fetch their medications? Confused

Fruit picking is looking good, too.

SmileyClare · 29/03/2020 21:17

TheCanterburyWhales please could you elaborate on the grant announced last night for self employed that can be applied for this month? I can't find any information online.
Is that through Universal Credit? I'm currently in an online queue of hundreds of thousands trying to claim.

I thought self employed had to wait to be contacted by HMRC in June?

TheCanterburyWhales · 29/03/2020 21:29

Sorry, I'm in Italy, it's the provisions the Italian govt announced last night for the self-employed and those who have been temporarily laid off.

SmileyClare · 29/03/2020 21:44

My mistake Canterbury Blush That sounds like a very efficient system. Apply by the end of this month and receive it 2 weeks later. I suppose because it's not means tested.

Thanks for replying.

TheCanterburyWhales · 29/03/2020 21:47

It's amazing all of us too tbh! Italian bureaucracy not being known for its speed and efficiency!

LuluJakey1 · 29/03/2020 22:05

How does super strict measures work if you've volunteered to be part of the NHS army that might drive folk to medical appointments or fetch their medications?

My bet is 95% of the people who volunteered will never hear another thing about it.

If they can't organise an already recruited, trained and regimented army to deliver PPE efficiently, the chances of them being able to use 750,000 unorganised, untrained, unassessed volunteers that they know nothing about to do things that have no systems in place yet are zilch.

housemdwaswrong · 29/03/2020 22:24

@StormyClouds your past is really weird. The vulnerable people are staying at home with no outside contact. This is for their health. The restrictions are for you. I'm at home, I don't give a toss whether you're doing a daily marathon, makes no difference to me. How can you misunderstand this so badly?

housemdwaswrong · 29/03/2020 22:27

@chocolateisavegetable - I'm not sure what this will look like but in some other countries they've shut shops alltogether and people have to carry paperwork with them when they leave the house.

When you say will these stricter measures include going food shopping 'only' once a week, do you mean once a month instead? I struggle to see how anyone really needs to go food shopping more than once a week during a global pandemic or more unless they have a medical reason and a very very specialised diet. We haven't been food shopping for 3 1/2 weeks and living off tinned and frozen food which is fine. Desperate times call for compromise

StormyClouds · 29/03/2020 23:48

@housemdwaswrong

What I am saying is that there has to be a balance between protecting the vulnerable and the effects that a lockdown has on the economy, on mental heath and on society.

Clearly, we don't want a situation where we have large numbers of older and vulnerable people dying. However, we have to get to a position where these groups are shielded at home for 3-6 months and everyone else is able to resume life.

We cannot have a situation where this lockdown goes on for 6 months, as that will set the economy back 20 years, and cause more deaths from depression and job losses.

As my 81 year old DM puts it, it is not fair for the youngsters today to have their lives destroyed to extend those of the elderly. Yes, I am aware that there are younger victims- but the average age of deaths in Italy is 79.5.

CandiceSucksCandy · 29/03/2020 23:53

I'm seeing a stricter lockdown as all unnecessary shopping will cease, as will our exercise allowance. So things like ASOS, Boohoo, anything not food or health related will all be stopped and the post limited.

Nos123 · 29/03/2020 23:55

shopping once a week? Great. What will happen to those of us who are broke/can’t drive and are having a hard time because of all the stockpiling? Some of us can’t afford the expensive stuff left over so go without and try again the next day. We don’t always have the money to buy a week’s worth of food in one go 😤

Nos123 · 30/03/2020 00:00

@LittleMrsMama

You’re living in a bubble if you struggle to see why some of us wouldn’t cope with a once a week shop. Once a month?? Some of us don’t survive on our initial wage and rely on benefits coming in later in the month to top us up.

Nos123 · 30/03/2020 00:02

I would have no electric if I bought a months worth of food in one go.

The ignorance of the privileged, bashing everyone with different needs to themselves, makes me so angry.

stophuggingme · 30/03/2020 00:13

They need to roll out testing on a mass scale and to find out how many have already had it.

UYScuti · 30/03/2020 00:24

I wonder if over the long-term we will deal with these types of situations by issuing everyone with protective suits that they have to wear when there's a contagion risk around?

UYScuti · 30/03/2020 00:28

I don't drive, my nearest supermarket is a mile away so everything that I eat I have to to be able to carry in my backpack comfortably.
Three chips a week works fine but if I only had to go out once a week I'd have to carry an awful lot of stuff🙁
mind you I could take my shopping trolley couldn't I 🤔
🙂👍

Isla727 · 30/03/2020 00:35

@StormyClouds- Coronavirus also kills healthy 30 and 40 somethings with no pre-existing conditions. Many of those with 'very at risk' pre-existing conditions are 20, 30, 40 year olds with severe asthma who have decades of normal life to live.

StormyClouds · 30/03/2020 01:49

@Isla727

It kills 20 year olds in very small numbers, yes. But the average age of the deaths in Italy is 79.5

Ereshkigalangcleg · 30/03/2020 01:52

Average in which way? Median? Mean? Do you have the breakdown of all deaths in Italy, or a link to the figures? I'd really like to read how they are complied or what the source is. Don't worry if in Italian, I can read it.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 30/03/2020 01:53
