Till June at least unless we get testing sorted out and cross infection in hospital stamped out

OnTheMoors · 30/03/2020 19:35

I think our government have a clear plan of action but are just giving us week by week information

Babyroobs · 30/03/2020 19:52

Beijing - Where on earth is the money coming from right now. 90k new Universal credit claims in the past week or so, the cost must be phenomenal. Is anyone still working normally apart from supermarket workers and key workers ? I am kind of muddling along doing what we can but fear I wont have a job in a few months.

We're borrowing it and also essentially printing it through Quantitative Easing, which could cause inflation.

From my basic understanding of economics - in 2008 QE money didn't cause overall inflation, because it didn't make it's way straight to the general public - it was given to banks so they'd be more willing to lend. That plus low interest rates caused the ridiculous rise in house prices. So it's not just "magic money tree", there will be repercussion in the form of inflation and also mega austerity to pay back the spiralling debt.

I've been furloughed so am getting 80% to sit on my arse. While that's all very nice, nothing comes for free - we will be paying for this afterwards, I just don't know by what means. More taxes? NHS sold off? 0 investment in anything?

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 30/03/2020 20:20

Depends what you mean by lockdown? If you mean the way it is at the moment, movement fully restricted then I'd say 3 to 6 weeks. I dont think the government can afford to pay 80% of peoples wages for much longer and the economy would never recover, as things are it will struggle. I think the social distancing and periods of on and off lockdown will continue for at least 6 months, maybe until a vaccine is produced.

Luckystar777 · 31/03/2020 02:10

I think until July but what's the point.. all the stores etc will have lost too much and closed down and there will be nothing to do. The world is going to be very different. It's hell.

Luckystar777 · 31/03/2020 02:12

Government can't afford, eh? The money is mostly numbers typed on a frickin' screen. Money doesn't even exist!

Luckystar777 · 31/03/2020 02:14

Borrowing it? Lol, uh huh, borrowing numbers typed on a screen. Good one. No wonder they laugh at us, call us useless eaters, a herd etc etc etc. Jeez. Wake up.

Luckystar777 · 31/03/2020 02:16

NHS is fucked. :(

DioneTheDiabolist · 31/03/2020 02:28

I have lived through past curfews and lockdowns (in a time of proper, murdery, awful, violence). It will last as long as people will tolerate it. Then we will move to covert meetings. Not great, but better than Glastonbury.Smile

You get used to things quick.

At the end of it, the economy learns and adapts.🤷‍♀️

Blizzardwhizard · 31/03/2020 03:02

6 months fully

Leobynature · 31/03/2020 05:15

I think in total it will take 12 weeks before all restrictions are removed. But in those 12 weeks restrictions will be lifted and relaxed.

Verily1 · 31/03/2020 05:20

12-14 weeks

SummersMahoosiveClipOnFringe · 31/03/2020 05:54

6 weeks max except for the shielded group.

Carlislemumof4 · 31/03/2020 09:47

It's hard to see how schools could start back even in September but perhaps they'll look to get primaries back at least where children will mainly live very local to the school, not sure about secondary before Christmas. Online learning until then? GCSEs and A levels could be assessed on coursework and smaller tests throughout the year.

Universities online learning all next academic year with national and international travel restrictions still in place until a widespread vaccination programme is possible (hopefully Autumn 2021).
