Essential Shopping (lighthearted, I hope!!)

I need to go food shopping today, but as the advice is for 'essentials' only, can I pick up say a packet of chocolate biscuits while I'm in the supermarket? Or would this be breaking the actual law, according to some people?

Maybe I should just stick with dry crackers and water?

Why do you need to buy water...don’t you know tap water is perfectly lovely! 🤢

Biscuits are essentials if you ask me, along with a bottle of vodka, waffles and Nutella! (That’s what I bought yesterday along with my essentials)!

Deux · 26/03/2020 09:44

Stop listening to the bilge that other people are spouting. Of course you can buy chocolate, wine, fancy bath foam. You can buy anything that’s for sale in the supermarket.

If it was illegal supermarkets wouldn’t be allowed to sell it.

slipperywhensparticus · 26/03/2020 09:46

I got slated when I said of course we might still need to buy clothing everyone screaming clothing was not essential and we should use whatever we had at home my son needed pants tesco sells pants I bought pants

Deux · 26/03/2020 09:47

When I go later I intend to buy flowers and a magazine.

Cremebrule · 26/03/2020 09:52

I suspect most parents of young children have been going mad buying crafty things. I certainly have. Places like hobby craft have been stripped of paper. I’ve seen someone on here moan at people for using amazon for non-essential purchases. Children need entertaining, they’ll also need shoes and clothes as they grow.

LuckyAmy1986 · 26/03/2020 10:23

@MrsWhites what's wrong with tap water? Or were you being sarcastic?!

Deux · 26/03/2020 10:33

OP never said she was going to buy water. She may have dry crackers at home. She did say she was being light hearted. Maybe the tiger came for tea and drank all the water in the tap.

TheReelSlimShady · 26/03/2020 10:34

I find it curious that off licences have been added to the list of shops that need to open.

To many of us wine is a big essential in these dark times... Wine

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 26/03/2020 10:37

The gov don't want people getting alcohol withdrawal and having fits which may need hospitals attention.

I read that South Africa are in a 3-week lockdown. For he duration of this, they are not allowed to sell alcohol or cigarettes.

I don’t smoke or drink but WTAF???

Jamonit · 26/03/2020 10:55

@MrsWhites - When I said 'water' I of course meant the slimy green stuff in the water butt, which we will of course be drinking and washing in (once a week whether we need it or not) to keep within the spirit of the MN moral overseers. But it will mean walking up the garden, which I am a bit dubious about. Will that count as my 'fresh air and exercise' for the day?

I'm also stressing about whether I should drive to the supermarket. I might run out of petrol or have an accident - for the first time in over 30 years of driving....

Confusing times.

I shopped early this morning to make sure I got mince and some chicken. Completely forgot I wouldn't be able to buy wine as it was before 10am. Now, to go back for that would be non essential.

Actually, looked like the wine aisles were very poorly sticked.

TheGirlWhoLived · 26/03/2020 11:05

I’m debating about buying a switch game. We will need to do a food shop in the week, and the kids do want the animal crossing game... but do I add it to the food shop or buy it from amazon! I don’t really want the judgement of the lady having to walk To get my game in it’s new packaging!

Pipandmum · 26/03/2020 11:05

My teenage son is at home full time for the first time in months - my meal calculation has gone out the window! I thought we had enough for a week to ten days, but nope, I'll have to go out tomorrow (after five days).
I'm off alcohol for Lent so at least won't be buying any, but my daughter announced she's still expecting an Easter egg hunt so that's back on the list.

Pipandmum · 26/03/2020 11:07

@TheGirlWhoLived my daughter just bought a switch game but through her Switch - nothing physical.

usernotfound0000 · 26/03/2020 11:15

I'm not planning on going to the supermarket just for 'luxuries' but man, I can't wait until I need to go buy more milk and bread because I will definitely be stocking up on the things that are getting us through this! I'll also be buying Easter eggs because I wasn't organised to get any before this and the Easter bunny will still be visiting our house.

usernotfound0000 · 26/03/2020 11:16

Oh and my emergency Hobbycraft order just arrived and I've got some craft kits coming from Amazon today.

TheGirlWhoLived · 26/03/2020 11:23

Oh that’s a good idea @Pipandmum ! I never thought of a digital copy

BarbaraofSeville · 26/03/2020 11:41

Or would this be breaking the actual law, according to some people

If you have any food in your house, you don't need to go out, it's not essential Wink.

Once you've eaten that out of date Christmas pudding lurking at the back of the cupboard and the mysterious tub of unidentified brown in the freezer, then you can have your chocolate biscuits, but until then, listen to Boris and Stay at Home.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 26/03/2020 11:46

If you are doing a shop anyway for food (veg, tins, actually food) of course you can buy what the fuck you like, chocolate and wine included.

What they want to stop is people nipping out for just a bar of chocolate if you see what I mean

jay55 · 26/03/2020 11:50

I bought cream eclairs today, if it was breaking the law it was bloody worth it.

WaterIsWide · 26/03/2020 11:53

In a crisis, make sure you have black peppercorns for your peppermill. Of course, I didn't just buy any black peppercorns I purchased Marks and Spencer black peppercorns.

So, I'm sorted.

Any one else ?

Tartyflette · 26/03/2020 11:55

what's wrong with tap water?
Our tap water tastes disgusting, the smell of chlorine (which has been much worse recently...) means it's hard to even put in your mouth. And if you can manage to get past the chlorine it tastes stale too, not very clean and just horrible. You run the tap and the smell of chlorine hits you right away.
I have just ordered a filter jug but it won't arrive for a while.

Tartyflette · 26/03/2020 11:56

Sorry, not very lighthearted. I don't like buying bottled water but the stuff coming put of the tap is getting worse!
