If you are facing no financial impact

Then what do you plan to do afterwards to help. I have just been discussing this with a few friends, some are in a position where they will get full time pay for the foreseeable and face almost no impact whilst others are on the brink of financial disaster.

My general plan is to make a point of using as many small local businesses as I can. Give extra to food banks. I'm sure there is more I can do. Anyone have any ideas

My DH works in the (small) charity sector. They have very limited reserves but they provide a vital (specialist) service for many vulnerable people and their families. So far the Government has not announced any support for small charities, many of whom will be needed more than ever during/after this is all over. The staff will be furloughed as much of what they do requires face to face interaction and the people they help are all in the 12 week isolation category. So whilst the big charities with massive reserves will be OK, the small guys will need the public's help more than ever as their income from fundraising has dried up. So anyone who can help smaller charities please do so.

On a personal level we use local businesses a lot anyway (rural area) so that will continue but we are also continuing our membership to our gym which is a family business and whom without the support of its members is unlikely to survive this.

Nquartz · 26/03/2020 08:28

I'm going to be using as many local businesses delivering at the moment as we can, I've transferred a money donation to the local food bank because I won't be making my usual food donations, donated to a local homeless charity.

Might offer to work in front line role for my company because my job is definitely not essential but I'm scared to go outside so not sure if I could bring myself to do it. DD might have had CV which means we might have, if I knew for definite I had then I'd definitely do it

PegasusReturns · 26/03/2020 08:29

Still paying cleaner/gardener/dog walker etc

I’m continuing to buy from independent food shops/restaurants for takeaway.

NotGenerationAlpha · 26/03/2020 08:30

I'm paying my childminder full fee. Also making donations. But I don't know how long our full pay will last. I mean both DH and my work are still trading, but no one can last forever with the economy going this way.

ItsMe1985 · 26/03/2020 08:30

"It's interesting seeing people suddenly give a shit about how pitiful benefit rates are. All of a sudden "nobody could possibly live on £94 a week" despite the fact unemployed/disabled people and carers have been doing exactly that for years."

Unemployed/disabled people get help with their rent and council tax...I get none of this. So NO I couldn't live on £94 a week.

feelingverylazytoday · 26/03/2020 08:31

gingersausage I read it, thanks Smile

Scruffyoak · 26/03/2020 08:35

Husband still being paid as he worked from home but we were on the brink anyway so apart from shopping local not much else I can do.

Pinkdelight3 · 26/03/2020 08:37

@StrictlyAFemaleFemale what's dk?

Owlandthepussycatwenttosea · 26/03/2020 08:40

Public sector workers claiming 'I'll pay more tax', so will those of us who eventually start being paid again, despite having a massive gap with no income at all.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 26/03/2020 08:44

I am paying all the people I normally employ regularly their normal money even though I cannot use any of them and also making sure my friends are all doing the same. We are supporting as many local businesses as we can. Also have ‘adopted’ several elderly neighbours and adding their shopping needs to our orders. Can see am going to be supporting my working kids who are all losing their jobs. Can also see am going to be paying much higher taxes for ever. But know none of this is enough.

This thread has encouraged me to donate to a food-bank and a local volunteer service - easy to make a substantial donation especially as there is so much we are not spending money on right now.

gingersausage · 26/03/2020 08:45

@ItsMe1985 they don’t get help with their mortgage though. Or their council tax if one half of the couple works a minimum wage job. Please don’t class the disabled or carers as “unemployed”. We are NOT talking about the “won’t work” sector here (a vanishingly small proportion of the benefits budget). This is EXACTLY what I meant in my post earlier on; it only took 80 posts for the sneering to start 🤦‍♀️.

suggestionsplease1 · 26/03/2020 08:47

I have told my tenant that May's rent can be written off altogether, and that for as long as they are only going to be given 80% of their wage I only expect 80% rent, and only paid when they receive it and are in a position to.

I have donated to a local food bank and to a homeless charity.

I am still paying my dog walker - but we have agreed that those walks can be taken at a later date, so I can't say that I'm paying for no service - I'm just recognising that the next little while will be immediately quite difficult and I want to help cushion that, and will take one walk a week in credit in the future.

snowyforest · 26/03/2020 08:48

Many people will have received no support during this time but will be hit with higher taxes once this is all over.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 26/03/2020 08:48

Great thread.
We're retired so no income impact, in fact we are saving money by not being able to travel/ go out etc.
Once restrictions are lifted, we will continue to buy local (we always have but will make a more conscious decision only to buy from supermarkets the things we can't buy locally.
We've discussed asking a guy who's done various jobs on the house to do jobs we could manage ourselves (if he wants them).
I have a cut n blow every 6 weeks, hardly ever just have a blow wave but will book into hairdressers for blow waves when I'm going out.
We eat out once a week usually, and have coffee if we're out shopping. Will increase that, checking with our favourite establishments when their quiet times are.
We know a few families who are badly affected for a variety of reasons, thinking through how best we help them without offending e.g. some we could work for a few hours a week without being paid.
And will read this thread thoroughly for other ideas.

highlandcoo · 26/03/2020 08:50

What would happen, after this has passed, if they asked people with savings of, say over 200,000 to donate a thousand to the Government's Corona recovery scheme. And people with over a million to donate 5,000.
Would people do it?
Well I would as I can afford to and there must be lots like me

I agree

everythingisginandroses · 26/03/2020 08:51

@Pinkdelight3 - Denmark (I'm guessing).

snowyforest · 26/03/2020 08:53

@highlandcoo seems a decent idea, would it be instead of higher tax though?

Marmite27 · 26/03/2020 08:56

@Itsnotthatcomplicated

You must live near me. I don’t think that particular butchers will survive.

Buy local. We have a play gym party booked for DC2, don’t think it will go ahead, people are hounding them for the return of their deposit, I’ve told them to keep ours. The kids love it, I’d much rather they can open back up.

Our Aldi has been fab, so I’ll be switching to them.

Fleurchamp · 26/03/2020 08:56

Our easter holiday was cancelled and we are getting a refund from the tour operator. I would gladly donate the money to a coronavirus recovery fund, if those that could, did, I am sure we would all benefit in the long term.
It does annoy me that the Richard Bransons of this world are looking for bailouts. Unnecessary- we are all going to be poorer, some to the point that they cannot sustain themselves, it's hardly likely that they will not be able to feed themselves.
And don't get me started on the Royal Family....
I do think this will lead to radical change (or at least I hope it will).

TheWordmeister · 26/03/2020 08:57

I had already made the switch to local delis for as much of the food shopping as I could.

I was happy to keep paying for the gym, but Nuffield have frozen payments of their own volition.

Bouncingbomb · 26/03/2020 08:59

I will pay everyone I usually do. I will also give any money I can spare to my close friends who are self employed because whatever they give the self employed is unlikely to be enough.

TheStuffedPenguin · 26/03/2020 08:59

No one is not being financially impacted by this but I agree with the spirit of your post .

Kannet · 26/03/2020 09:02

Of course we will feel some financial impact in the long run. We all will. I just mean here and now.

It's also not a sneery thread, or looking for claps on the back.

We are still impacted but not financially right now.

I thought this could be a positive thread

OP posts:
Reginabambina · 26/03/2020 09:04

We’re going to continue as usual (we normally just scrape by once we’ve paid tax, debts and, necessary outgoings).

Reginabambina · 26/03/2020 09:06

@TheStuffedPenguin a lot of people are making more than enough money out of this to compensate for temporary dip in income/drop in asset values.
