If you are facing no financial impact

Then what do you plan to do afterwards to help. I have just been discussing this with a few friends, some are in a position where they will get full time pay for the foreseeable and face almost no impact whilst others are on the brink of financial disaster.

My general plan is to make a point of using as many small local businesses as I can. Give extra to food banks. I'm sure there is more I can do. Anyone have any ideas

I was listening to the news and teh numbers of people who have volunteered to help the NHS etc.
What would happen, after this has passed, if they asked people with savings of, say over 200,000 to donate a thousand to the Government's Corona recovery scheme. And people with over a million to donate 5,000.
Would people do it?
Well I would as I can afford to and there must be lots like me.

Hiding this thread as quite honestly, I’m so envious of those who won’t have any financial difficulties as a result of this. My business is screwed and it’s highly likely I could lose my home, so seeing this thread just makes me feel even worse. Sorry if that sounds bad - it’s just the way I feel.

Tish008 · 26/03/2020 08:15

I will be supporting family who are financially affected.

I already use local business

HolidayLetter · 26/03/2020 08:15

I would certainly appreciate it if people decided to go on self-catering holidays in the UK, once this is over. At the moment, things are looking bad for my family.

Jigsawpuzzle · 26/03/2020 08:17

We are retired and house paid for, DS is key worker in food 🥘 production.Steady household income. DH does pensioner hour but also buys locally as our village has quite a few shops. We have given items to neighbours, food banks.

lubeybooby · 26/03/2020 08:18

I'm not financially impacted thank goodness but not a massive earner either. I'm still playing my cleaner even though she can't come and have always donated money rather than food to local food bank so have stepped that up a little. Don't think I can do much more than that really.

Frangipanini · 26/03/2020 08:18

I think higher earners with no impact should be taxed higher for a period of time to help shoulder the burden between us all.

Youngatheart00 · 26/03/2020 08:18

We will definitely be paying much higher taxes for a very long time. Especially higher rate.

I already give to 4 charities monthly by DD and have made several ad-hoc donations to local charities which are impacted by the current circumstances. I’ve also ordered gifts for both sets of god kids to help them stay occupied whilst they are stuck indoors.

When this is all over....I’m not sure too much will change. I’ve always been generous with my money, I don’t have my own children so it feels right to help others when I can.

I think what I might change is being more generous with my time and remain involved with community efforts. All those vulnerable / lonely people aren’t going to disappear when we are through this.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 26/03/2020 08:18

We aren't financially affected but I'm a mental health nurse continuing to work full time in the NHS on an acute in patient unit so my daily life remains the same with added stress.

I feel I'm doing my bit by still getting up and going to work each day, fighting every day to keep the virus away from our vulnerable patients.

mochajoes · 26/03/2020 08:18

It would be great if the 0.1% could bail us out

MetallicPaints · 26/03/2020 08:20

Once I am able to, I would like to volunteer at our local foodbank. I can't do this right now as I have work and childcare, but when schools are back I work part time and would like to use some of my free time to help.
I will definitely be using local businesses more, our local Greengrocers and Butchers have been fantastic at adapting to this crisis and have gone above and beyond to keep serving their customers.

8by8 · 26/03/2020 08:20

We’d booked an electrician, bathroom fitter and decorator for this month. We’ve cancelled them, but paid for their time anyway and they’ll do the work later in the year. Means we’re only spending what we’d already budgeted, and they get to spread out their financial losses and still have some income this month.

RJnomore1 · 26/03/2020 08:20

I’m practically working double hours for my LA to set up and manage our response, I genuinely have no capacity to do anything else to help. I get salaried btw so I’m not complaining but it’s not for any financial reward, it’s to be able to sleep at night knowing I’ve done all I can.

Porcupineinwaiting · 26/03/2020 08:22

@Doyouthinktheysaurus you are doing your bit.

Randomschoolworker19 · 26/03/2020 08:22

As a TA (still in school) I may not be feeling any financial hardship, well no more than usual but I was hardly raking in loads even at the best of times. 15k is hardly a lot to live on after all so I will be carrying on as usual.

gingersausage · 26/03/2020 08:23

And I I suspected it would be, my post has been completely ignored. Oh the irony 🙄.

Whatwedontknow · 26/03/2020 08:23

Hmmm this thread has a feeling of virtuousness by handouts.

I will be saving for the impact of the job cuts, which may well affect me and DP, and recession that will inevitably follow.

I already support local business and work with families in crisis who nobody usually gives a second thought to.

FlockofGulls · 26/03/2020 08:24

When things have been cancelled because of closures - theatre tickets etc - I have donated the cost rather than take the offered refund.

I am still paying for gym and personal trainer and cleaner.

On my (now weekly) shopping time, I am buying 2 of things I buy and extra dry things, to put in the food bank collection bins - but I always do that anyway.

I'll be using local independent coffee shops etc when we get to the other side.

Whatwedontknow · 26/03/2020 08:24

@gingersausage I hear you and agree

MooPointCowsOpinion · 26/03/2020 08:24

I’m still paying my cleaner, childminder and dog sitter. Neither mine nor my husband’s wage will be affected. I’m also buying local, from cafes and restaurants who are doing take away food and from the butchers too. I’ll never go to the big companies who have tried to stop paying employees like weatherspoons again!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 26/03/2020 08:24

Just on the subject of being ok financially or not. I think there are very few who WON’T be financially impacted by this. Apart from the already super rich or already comfortably retired. They may be able to pay their bills now but who knows how things will pan out economically when this critical period is over?

I know we are extremely lucky not to be financially impacted by this for now. I realise many many others are not so fortunate and are having thrbmost worrying times of their lives. But this really will impact everyone. both DH and I work in the public sector, me in a school, and everyone knows full well that they were already really struggling with funding. I am support staff, not a teacher, so I am really worried about my job in any future restructuring with extremely restricted finances. I had hoped to go part time within 10 years as I have some investments which should have enabled me to do that. But they’ve lost so much money it will probably take many years to recover so that’s looking very unlikely. And if I lose my job altogether then our lifestyle will change drastically. No spare money to put into the leisure, hospitality or travel industries, which are the ones that will have been decimated at the end of this and that will NEED the money.

I am really worried for our economy when this is all over, and particularly for our kids’ generation. Things were already bad for them in terms of housing and job prospects.

My one hope is that the country will turn more socialist again. And raise taxes. There is too much money sitting with the very rich, and crises like this just highlight it. Of course, there is always the risk that we will get through this and everyone sees Boris as a national hero, and votes him in again. Hmm

LaneBoy · 26/03/2020 08:24

I’m not financially impacted, however that is only because DH and I are already unable to work much (I lost my job through illness about 4 years ago, DH’s health suddenly deteriorated early 2019 and he had to stop work too, other than a few WFH hours that he can still do during the pandemic) - so we are already settled on universal credit and luckily in a lovely secure HA house too. (It’s felt a bit odd lately to say that I’m actually really grateful for our existing health issues meaning we are safer!)

So we can’t really directly help in a big financial way and I hope it’s still ok to post as your thread has made me think. I’m definitely far more aware of small businesses now and will be prioritising them in everything, not just occasionally (eg I’m more aware around Christmas usually). Everything just seems so precarious for people. :( I will be arranging a therapy session soon for example, when I otherwise might hang on a little longer (especially as I’m nervous about doing this online rather than in person, I may have just “got by” without it) - my psychologist is a huge asset to her field and does not deserve to go under when she’s paying out for her office still.

HoffiCoffi13 · 26/03/2020 08:26

We are currently affected, although DH works in banking and long term could be facing redundancy.
Like others I’m continuing to pay for all the activities we usually pay for like piano lessons, ballet classes, swimming lessons. Upping our food bank donation (when we can get food!). Buckling up for higher tax rates. Sent some money to SIL in Spain who has lost her business over this and is struggling to pay her mortgage.

LaneBoy · 26/03/2020 08:26

I agree curly I also meant to say that we may still not be ok in the future, even though we are secure now, as the long term cuts required will have an impact for sure

Mrskeats · 26/03/2020 08:26

I am using my local small businesses as much as possible. Definitely will not use big companies that are not treating their staff well.
Paid a handyman even though he can't come now-he can do the work later. Donated to foodbank.
