People angry at others exercising within the guidelines

Has anyone else seen such behaviour? All day I've seen posts commenting on people 'walking about' and absolute venom spouted at their 'selfish behaviour' as they should be staying at home Hmm I'm all for following government guidelines, but this is exactly what these people are doing! Stretching their legs or going for a run. I saw one woman who was foaming at the mouth as apparently she'd seen a cyclist go by - the sheer horror of it!! Am I missing something? I don't get it. Or is it just the (nobhead) mentality of my small town?

OP posts:
Winesalot · 25/03/2020 11:50

I just arrived home from my regular run and am surprised that there people who simply have no idea how to follow the guidielines out today.

I do my very best to keep the 2 metres as did the majority I past today. I, as did others waited for people to exit the narrow underpasses, I start overtaking well before two metres and give wide berth. But there is always one or two.

Today two people stood on opposite sides of the 2.5 m wide path (no space to go other side of them due to a fence or a river bank. They have a dog or two each. I have seen them do this before CV too but it has not been such an issue then, well except the let their dogs wrestle and fight in between them usually without seeing the need to allow others to get through. So, yes they have form.

Keeping my distance (and there were about 4 others coming the other way all keeping distance in single file ) I asked them to perhaps move to one side to talk so I did not have to go between (ie then be less than 1 metre between me and each of them) They both yelled what an idiot I was and went right off ranting at me. I told the guy he was an arse and he promptly told me even more aggressively that if I wasn’t a female he’d.... (I’d sprinted through them by this stage so I didn’t hear).

Delatron · 25/03/2020 11:52

Completely agree OP. I’ll listen to the official government advice rather than the idiots on here.

AvonBarksdale99 · 25/03/2020 11:53

I hold my breath when walking/running past people who won’t get out of the way. Not sure if it has any basis in science but it makes me feel better...

Winesalot · 25/03/2020 11:59

Actually, family groups are fine.

However, please have some situational awareness that if the path is about 3 m across, that you should keep an eye out (yes!! Behind you as well) and if people are coming drop to single file. I had to ask a family of five to do this .

Happy that you are in a group but when someone comes, just drop to single file for that time as the path will allow everyone to be the two metres in comfort.

missyB1 · 25/03/2020 12:01

Its that "Janet the coronavirus expert from facebook" mentality isn't it? Suddenly everyone knows better than the Government! Remember the chief medical office is involved in the decisions, he will have advised the going for a walk.
But hey ho if your second cousin twice removed is a nurse and says no one is ever allowed to step outside the house....

Winesalot · 25/03/2020 12:03

Sorry, to add. I also had to ask a few families of two or three to do this too as they were walking with two metres between them and this is not going to let someone else past. If you are out and keeping two metres between you and you want to talk (so single file won’t work for you), don’t use a busy path that is only 2.5-3 metres.

ilovecakeandwine · 25/03/2020 12:16

It was like yesterday being told off for doing a weekly shop should go no less than once a fortnight apparently don't remember BJ saying that . They forget that the shops have been bare the last week or so told not to stock up and be sensible .
I know someone who went for a run and a guy drove past shouting lockdown.
People on here saying you don't need to go for a walk because I may be tempted to go and visit a friend . I'll lock my front door shall I because I can't be trusted to not go and see anyone .

Siameasy · 25/03/2020 12:21

We all saw the same PM briefing yet I know people who think they are being watched individually and are under the impression that they are not allowed in the garden

teafourtoo · 25/03/2020 12:24

There are people are enjoying policing others even when they are conducting themselves sensibly within the rules as it's giving them a sense of authority!

OhMsBeliever · 25/03/2020 14:13

@AvonBarksdale99 @Itsnotthatcomplicated

I'm not going out multiple times a day with my hordes of teenagers. Yesterday I went out with 2. Today I'm not going out because I have my period and cba. 1 has gone out on his own for a walk.

The reason I don't want them out on their own is 1. One has SEN and can't go out on his own. 2. Idiots seeing a couple of teenagers out for a walk and deciding they're up to no good. 3. They're good kids, but I'd like to make sure they concentrate and remember social distancing if other people are around.

Being teenagers they're not actually that keen on going out in daylight and claim they will not need fresh air at all while off school. Hmm Should have panic bought a ton of Vitamin D. Grin

gingerbreadslice · 25/03/2020 14:30

I took mine to the field today with my husband we have three kids all together on our way we had a few bus drivers and cars given us despairing looks out the window it was strange.. no one else around us and we are allowed out as a family to get air?? Felt very very judged Shock

BigChocFrenzy · 25/03/2020 14:38

"I can see no wrong in driving to somewhere more open spaced and having a walk, run, whatever with or without children as long as they maintain distance from others."

@Lynda07 I thought that sounded sensible too

BUT, at least some police chiefs disagree - and they are doing the actual enforcing
No good us saying on MN we think it is sensible, if the police stop & fine people for this

e.g. Devon & Cornwall Police Chief Constable Shaun Sawyer was interviewed on the BBC TV regional news today.

He was asked if it is OK to drive to somewhere else for daily exercise.

The Chief Constable replied:

“No. It is against the spirit. If you live near a beach or a moor, fine.”

He stated that if people exercise outside their home, they should not use the car to go somewhere else

GodolphianArabian · 25/03/2020 14:49

We've been going out for walks. My lot will either kill each other or destroy the house if we don't. I've decided to drive to a nearby common because it's crisscrossed with so many paths social distancing is easy - you see someone, you switch path - making for some zigzaggy walks. We made it more fun yesterday by pretending other people were zombies. Kids loved keeping an eye out for zombies and thought it was great fun! We'll carry on doing this until the rules change. It's good for all of us. I'm sure someone will say I'm taking a risk driving there and walking as we might have an accident. But if we don't burn off some of their energy they'll be dangerous in the house. You can easily break an arm tearing up and down stairs playing with your siblings. Not going out can be a risk too.

Deux · 25/03/2020 15:04

You find out what people are really like in times of crisis, the mask slips.

You also find out how many people put their own spin on the rules, or they’re just too thick, or they get their information second hand, such as fabricating that only key workers or essential workers should be going to work.

There was a post yesterday from someone asking how she could inform on people she thought were breaking the rules. The OP stated they lived in a detached house with a long drive and couldn’t actually see anyone from their home. Hmm

Another poster who said that she’d heard that for any car journeys you were supposed to log them with 101 giving your registration plate and journey details Hmm

What’s baffling is that others read this crap and believe it true. There’s no sources, no critical thinking, no ability to assess risk, poor self awareness. Just shows how many people would be happy with increased authoritarianism.

StormyClouds · 25/03/2020 15:17

@BigChocFrenzy

The police have neither the resources nor the inclination to stop every car to check where its occupants are going. Stop the bootlickery and use your brain.

Going for a walk in a quiet forest is far preferable to going down a busy street.

StormyClouds · 25/03/2020 15:20

A lot of the people on here are ecstatic that they finally get the chance to put their Stasi tendencies to use.

The SS would certainly have had no trouble recruiting neighbourhood spies from mumsnet. The bootlicking and calls for martial law are unreal.

Lifesavesocialdistance · 25/03/2020 15:24

The awful comment I've seen on our phone locals social media media have been Vile.. Even Clamouring for a car park to be shut... '' I wanna close it nahh'' which leads to vast open spaces where thousands could walk!

It's horrendous.
. So nasty.

People need to get out, get vitamins d... Increase lung capacity, stay mentally well enough to get through!

Lifesavesocialdistance · 25/03/2020 15:26

😁 Stormy!!

Yes!! From my point local area there would be enough to recruit stasi as well. All congratulating each other for verbally calling people out, taking photos of them....

It's insane.

2beautifulbabs · 25/03/2020 15:32

I had to go for a walk with my DS 3 and DD 1 and DH we had to get out for some fresh air and proper stretch of the legs as we have all been stuck in doors since Friday not because of self isolation but through choice it was only today that both our DCs got cranky we decided to take them for a walk so long as people are sensible and keep their distance from others I don't see what the issue is what's the other alternative we all go mad 🤷‍♀️

Applejaxx · 25/03/2020 15:46

A lot of the people on here are ecstatic that they finally get the chance to put their Stasi tendencies to use.

Yes! I bet they were right swotty teachers pets in school! When lockdown happened there were a few threads from concerned parents who shared custody. Some of the comments on them were vile. Absolutely no basic human decency or compassion, or indeed common sense. I'd argue that a child being denied access to a parent or vice versa could be highly detrimental to mental health or wellbeing.

I can hear my neighbours in their garden at the moment. How dare they go outside of their home..Wink

Deux · 25/03/2020 15:54

I used to wonder how on earth hitler and the like managed to get so many informants but it’s all here, even on Mumsnet, for all to see.

And it’s not just joe public. There’s a thread by a lone parent out for a walk around the block with their young child who has mobility issues. They were holding hands. A police officer bollocked her and told her she and her child should be 2m apart!

Lots of people over eager to over interpret the rules.

caringcarer · 25/03/2020 15:57

I am lucky as I have a large garden I can go out in to get fresh air and sunshine. Because I know many others don't have that resource I am choosing to stay at home and use my excercise bike on many days. The less of us out the better. Stay safe, stay in.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/03/2020 15:59

@StormyClouds Betting the police won't spot you is one alternative - to breaking any rule -
but risks being an expensive one

If you can't afford to spaff money on a fine, best to do as the police say,
even if they are probably wrong about the letter of the law

  • it is an on the spot fine if they choose
BigChocFrenzy · 25/03/2020 16:00

People have been fined heavily by police in other countries

I would assume it would happen here, especially if they want to make a few examples

Deux · 25/03/2020 16:03

Well one assumes an erroneously issued fine would be challenged.

As far as I’m aware it’s not been passed into legislation yet but is due to be today.

What’s the situation in Germany, BigChoc? I think the fine amount is £30 or £40 for UK
