Help worried about bleach spray on food

Hi I’m in a real state and don’t know what to do, the past couple of weeks I’ve been spraying any shopping with either dettol or domestos bleach spray, I’ve been spraying onto kitchen roll first then wiping over but I haven’t then rinsed them, my husband said his dinner earlier - carton of soup - smelt of bleach and he could taste it. I’m freaking out now, how dangerous is this? I stupidly thought it wouldn’t be able to pass through the packaging but my husband said the food definitely tastes of it.
Is this very harmful, I’m thinking to call 111.

He will be fine. Don't panic.

MiggyMoggyMoo · 24/03/2020 21:04

Calm down chicken, I'm sure it will be fine. Bleach smell gets right up your nose and can last for ages. As long as you haven't been pouring it in his soup, you'll be fine. It's an anxious time but try not to let it run away with you.

Take care

Bearbehind · 24/03/2020 21:04

FGS - 111 are not in a position to deal with people who’ve got a bit of bleach spray on their food

Bleach and Dettol are clearly not supposed to be used on food products

Clam down and use something milder if you must

CantCope8 · 24/03/2020 21:06

It’s just that it would have been a few items over the past week that’s all, and now he’s just told me that he noticed it before as well but didnt think to tell me.

I’m absolutely terrified.

OP, you really need to calm down

Bleach stinks, the smell makes me feel sick

You can’t have got enough on anything to poison anyone by wiping cartons

Just be a bit more sensible in future

RogueV · 24/03/2020 21:09

Erm in the nicest possible way do not spray bleach and dettol on food.

CantCope8 · 24/03/2020 21:10

Thank you for replies he is really worried, it is strong enough to penetrate through packaging isn’t it? And go into the food

You don't need to use bleach. Washing up liquid is perfectly adequate. Spraying toxic chemicals in your house is not ideal at any time, even less so on your food.

I know I’m pathetic, I have severe anxiety disorder and this virus has got the better of my mind. How bad do you think this is im so scared and angry at myself.

The bleach has tainted the food. It will do absolutely no harm at all and you have nothing to worry about. If the food is impossible to enjoy then you might have to waste it but that's all.

YangShanPo · 24/03/2020 21:16

Bleach isnt really poisonous it is harmful because it would damage and burn your gut, so the tiny amount that could get transferred onto your food from a dilute spray on the outside of the carton is not enough to do harm.

Bearbehind · 24/03/2020 21:16

OP, it really can’t be that bad if you’ve only wiped cartons

Just calm down and don’t do it going forwards

The smell is vile and would be noticeable even if of was on your hands from holding the carton

HasaDigaEebowai · 24/03/2020 21:18

It will be a tiny amount. It’s fine. You can purify water by putting bleach into it and then drink the water safely so you’re probably looking at a similar level on the food

endofthelinefinally · 24/03/2020 21:21

Don't spray bleach.
Dilute it in a bowl, wring out a cloth tightly and wipe things.
Inhaling bleach isn't good for anyone with a respiratory problem.

penisbeakers · 24/03/2020 21:22

🙄

nearlyfinished1moreyear · 24/03/2020 21:27

I wash my dishes with bleach, have done since I've been doing dishes. My mum and granny, aunties sister's all do the same. We rinse the dishes after, we've all survived Shock

StressoeZoe · 24/03/2020 21:30

Soap is better for this virus because it breaks down the membrane that holds it together. Wiping with soapy washing up liquid water would be better any way.

This. Trust me, I'm a chemist. Both bleach and soap destroy the virus but soap will probably work better on many surfaces.

Stop using bleach.

DartmoorChef · 24/03/2020 21:45

Stop. Calm down. Relax. Now.

Hes not been poisoned. Trust me if he had, he would be in pain and know about it.

A small amount of bleach diluted in soup may taint the taste but it will not have done any harm.

Trust me. Im a chef and i am certain of this.

CantCope8 · 24/03/2020 21:49

I’m so grateful for these replies thank you. I did call 111 and they are now getting a paramedic to call us back which has made me worry even more. Bear in mind this is a weeks worth of eating food that might have had bleach going through the packaging.

I’m normally intelligent I swear, I know soap destroys it and only use that to wash my hands and some other things just thought that bleach would be better. I don’t know why, I’m so angry.

OP posts:
IAmFleshIAmBone · 24/03/2020 21:53

It'll be fine, maybe just use some soap from now on, I've been washing my fruit and veg with green household soap Grin

DartmoorChef · 24/03/2020 21:55

Bear in mind this is a weeks worth of eating food that might have had bleach going through the packaging.

And if it had been going through, to any level that would be a danger, he would have noticed and tasted it. You would have been able to smell it.

Chance12 · 24/03/2020 21:55

You actually called 111?

What a waste of their time.

SugarSugarShimmy · 24/03/2020 21:57

You can’t phone 111 for something like this. We’re in the middle of a deadly pandemic. Paramedics have better things to do like saving people’s lives. Someone could die because they’re wasting time speaking to someone who’s soup smelled a bit of Dettol.

I know you have anxiety but please try and see the bigger picture here.
