How will you be interpreting ‘one form of exercise a day?’

For me it will be a bike ride - keeps you at a safe distance from others.

Will not be doing any particularly dangerous form of cycling - no mountain biking or anything crazy before people start!

One dog walk per day for me, one for dh. Dcs to accompany one or other us where possible.

We have two dogs, one who is young and walks well. The other is old and can’t walk far. Old dog will no longer be taken on walks, but can still spend time in the garden.

megletthesecond · 23/03/2020 22:42

A run. There's a quiet wide path near my house and I've already practiced a 5k.
5 very dull, but safe loops.
I can see well ahead and if anyone joins the path I can easily avoid them. Far more than 2m away.

Bunnybigears · 23/03/2020 22:42

So the dog needs three walks. He wont wee or poo in the back yard and we are straight on to the street at the front. DH will walk him in the morning, I will walk him in the afternoon with the kids as part of 'P.E.' but someone will have to walk him again in the evening, therefore that person has 2 periods of outside exercise. I hope that will be allowed

Flaxmeadow · 23/03/2020 22:44

where is the walking dog on lead advice coming from please

Apart from the law. It can also come from other people you encounter.

If someone, anyone, asks you to put your dog on a lead then you must comply. This is nothing to do with recent events, it's been that way for a while

Amazed at how many dog owners dont understand

IDSNeighbour · 23/03/2020 22:45

If it's true that you can walk with one non household member then I can feel the tiniest bit of light opening up in this nightmare.

But I don't think it is true. Those of us who live alone have just been sentenced to months of total and complete loneliness while households of 6 can all merrily set off and walk their dog/fly their kites/ride their bikes in a big group together.

I don't know how to get through this.

FuckOffCorona · 23/03/2020 22:46

I run three times per week so will be keeping up with that. On the remaining 4 days per week I’ll try and get out for a walk.

CorianderLord · 23/03/2020 22:49

A walk round the park probably, I have to work at home so don't have time for much else before it gets dark (start at 7) I'll skip on my terrace likely for actual exercise and do yoga.

Kintsugi16 · 23/03/2020 22:52

I will do the usual 30 miles on my bike

maddy68 · 23/03/2020 22:56

Taking the dog for a walk

HasaDigaEebowai · 23/03/2020 22:58

I’m sure half the people insisting on their right to walk don’t usually walk on a daily basis. I walk the dog every day and certainly don’t usually see hoards of walkers. All that is going to happen is that within days there will be no right to go out to exercise because people have once again taken the piss.

UYScuti · 23/03/2020 23:01

maybe more people will get into a regular exercise habit, that's a good thing isnt it!
Of course we need to stick to the guidelines during the outbreak but over the longer term people might use this as a springboard for positive changes?

EmmaC78 · 23/03/2020 23:03

HasaDiga I agree. I normally run three times a week and normally bump into one or two other runners or walkers. I think paths will be mobbed from tomorrow.

UYScuti · 23/03/2020 23:03

really, I cant see people actually complying?

YgritteSnow · 23/03/2020 23:04

I will walk the dog in the morning. Ds in the afternoon. Ddog will have to make do with the garden in between times.

YahBasic · 23/03/2020 23:06

We’ve been following the rules of lockdown for about a week now.

We walk for between 30-60 mins in an evening. We’ve also got a spin bike and do yoga at home.

Flaxmeadow · 23/03/2020 23:16

Dog owners rarely do comply with the law in my experience

The law is called something like 'on direction' or something like that. It was brought in/or an addition to the dangerous dogs acts.

If someone believes that a dog might show aggression or is worried about a dog not on a lead, then they can tell the dog walker to put the dog on a lead there and then. But you just get no reply or sometimes even abuse

Shock Just how often are you instructing people to put their dogs on leads then?

PickAChew · 23/03/2020 23:24

Well today, I walked to the retail park then dh picked me up with our shopping, sith Ds2 in the back.

Afyer lunch, I too Ds2 for a wee walk, after lunch. Dh went for a walk, after he had finished his wfh, giving up on taking Ds2 with him.

I envisage giving up on the bit in the middle and insisting dh walks with Ds2.

PickAChew · 23/03/2020 23:26

And dog walkers have been the biggest barrier to social distancing. Crowds of them with all their dogs sniffing each others arses.

DropZoneOne · 23/03/2020 23:28

Walk around our village. DD can come with me or DH, but I'm going to avoid going all 3 of us because that does nothing for my mental health Grin

PickAChew · 23/03/2020 23:30

And I agree that my regular walking routes have already been much busier. Some used to be so quiet that I walked fast through fear. Now some parts are so busy that I walk fast through fear.

Toothsil · 23/03/2020 23:32

A walk with DD. We live in the country and never meet anyone where we walk. How will they police how many times a day people do their exercise?

PinkandOrange · 23/03/2020 23:33

I imagine he means you can go out for what one ‘unit’ of exercise means for you. So for some people that will be a walk around the block, for some a 5 mile run and for some a 30 mile bike ride. That seems sensible.

Scrowy · 23/03/2020 23:33

Can't answer for Flaxmeadow but I'm a farmer and I ask people a lot. Always politely, always with an explanation why it is important.

The most common response is passive aggressive embarrassed huffiness. They put the dog on the lead for a microsecond until they think they are out of sight and then let it off again.

Then there are the people who swear at you and tell you to fuck off. I like those ones because weirdly they usually do stick the dog on a lead and flounce off and don't come back.

The worst are the ones who you think look nice and reasonable and who think they are reasonable. They never are. You ask them to put 'Ruby' (It's always an anthropomorphised name) on a lead and it's like having a conversation with a toddler. Why. I don't want to. You can't make me.

DP and I are actually slightly cheered by tonight's news. We might have a peaceful lambing time for a change.

Straycatstrut · 23/03/2020 23:34

Single mum of a 7yo and 3yo and 6m springer spaniel who needs a hell of a lot of exercise. She normally gets 2-3 big walks a day (huge open countryside and hills here) when the boys are at school... but now it'll have to be one Sad and it's a struggle just doing that. 3yo had a nasty fall today and wouldn't walk any further, he just flung himself on the ground in floods, so we had to go home after 10 minutes. He was in tears, I was in tears carrying him home and holding the pulling dog at the same time ,whilst 7yo was stamping and moaning. I just wanted to scream for help but obviously no one can help.

So jealous of people with another adult meaning you can swap and get some time to yourself out in then open by yourselves. I'd do anything for that!
