They're still open aren't they?

Doubt it, not essential (plus hoping not selfishly as live on one lol)

StarShapedWindow · 23/03/2020 20:43

Yes, but possibly not from tomorrow. It’s not essential work.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 23/03/2020 20:45

Its not clear though is it

I'm currently living on a building site & the builders were out in force today. Will see if they turn up tomorrow. I'm guessing not.

MeanwhileAtNumber98 · 23/03/2020 20:48

My dh works on a site, he assumes he's not going any more.

crazybutkind · 23/03/2020 20:48

I am waiting to hear about this aswell. My husband is an electrician and it's not been clear

Piggywaspushed · 23/03/2020 20:51

Building site opposite me : literally 50 builders there today. I bet they will be there again tomorrow. To get some shops built which no one will be moving into for months and months.

MakeLemonade · 23/03/2020 20:53

I have no kitchen and three young children. I really hope they’ll let my builders come and at least get me to a point that I can cook.

Frouby · 23/03/2020 21:00

I dunno, we in construction industry and not heard not to go. Said non essential shops and businesses but didn't say non essential businesses.

There are rumours of split shifts on our sites.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 23/03/2020 21:05

Theres a big difference between essential build maintenance and stuff that can be done in a week or month or year.

Nicola Sturgeon explicitly closed them i think. But nothing clear from Boris

Kinda depends on how long you can get stock too? What happens to that end of the chain? Agree it is not that clear but sure time will make it so

StarShapedWindow · 23/03/2020 21:17

We’ve just received an email to say the site will be open. I’m really unhappy about it. It came with a lovely paragraph about others taking over from anyone who doesn’t turn up.

Piggywaspushed · 23/03/2020 21:21

It's covered by the 'only travel to get to work if you have to' ie interpreted as 'I cannot work on a building site from home'

I cannot think of many places that observe social distancing and handwashing less than a building site.

Jojo19834 · 23/03/2020 21:24

@StarShapedWindow that is a rubbish thing to do and say. Not sure how it is an essential service as someone else pointed out.

Jojo19834 · 23/03/2020 21:24

@StarShapedWindow I mean the email not your post!

Hazelnutlatteplease · 23/03/2020 21:24

only travel to get to work if you have to' ie interpreted as 'I cannot work on a building site from home'

Yes thats how i interpreted it. They've fucked over any non essential building workers.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/03/2020 21:26

But building sites are rarely essential. Obviously they would be if they were building a hospital but not house building, leisure etc.

It's not clear - only go to work if you can't work from home and it's essential work would suggest that the site should close but many building site workers will be self employed or freelancers who have been ignored in the provisions for protecting incomes so many will be working until explicitly told not to.

NothingIsWrong · 23/03/2020 21:27

I have 7 active sites. Only one of them is essential work because we see doing serious structural remedial works to an unstable building. I am assuming this one will continue and the other 6 will stop work once the current work is at a stage where that is possible. You can't always just walk off a site

StarShapedWindow · 23/03/2020 21:39

Thanks Jojo - I think we’re just going to tell them that there is no build more important than lives.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 23/03/2020 21:40

Mines just messaged me to tell me hes in tomorrow. Its a fucking joke. Hes not even involved in the fabric of a building

OP posts:
wellthatsjustgreat · 23/03/2020 21:58

I think they need to finalise what they intend to do to support the self-employed before they halt construction. I expect to hear an announcement on both at the same time. No actual evidence of this those, just my opinion.

wellthatsjustgreat · 23/03/2020 21:59

Though....not those Confused

Hotcuppatea · 23/03/2020 22:01

The announcement wasn't, don't go to work unless it's essentiial. It was don't go to work if you can do your job from home.

It was carefully worded and I think building sites will be open.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 23/03/2020 22:03

Thats exactly right @Hotcuppatea protects big business while throwing individuals and nhs to the wolves

MurrayTheMonk · 23/03/2020 22:04

DPs shut down from tomorrow
