So far I’ve thought of:

Drug addicts that normally shop lift to get money, what will they do?

People living a double life, they’ll have to choose one family to isolate with.

Err that’s all I can think of, but surely there’s more?

Yes more home cooking.
Drug dealers will do all home deliveries.
Very little nits and reduction in STDs.
Less taking things for granted. People's mindset will change.
May build mental heath resilience in some kids and teenagers.
Flowering of creativity such as song writing, drawing, writing, etc. I expect to read some seriously good books by current unknowns written during this time.
Population less fit.

Justanotherlurker · 22/03/2020 22:10

Nothing, we are a globalised economy, it will take, at most couple of months after it's over for us to return to normal, massive street parties, travel under the guise of a bucket list, companies wanting to make sure they can survive the global recession.

123456kent · 22/03/2020 22:10

I think the baby debate is interesting and i’ve been wondering a lot about that (trying to distract myself from mental breakdown).
People aren’t going to be having one night stands with no contraception and ending up pregnant. They are stuck in a house with partner and presumably continued access to contraception, and i think surely lots of people will say no way do I want to be pregnant now (trust me, it’s shit). 9 months after things look better there will be a boom.
I think the school year in 4 years time will have less pupils and in 21 years time we’ll have fewer grads leaving uni - a gap in the employment market.
This coming from someone with absolutely no expertise in this!
But finding that interesting

BillieEilish · 22/03/2020 22:11

a couple of months? methinks not.

Surly · 22/03/2020 22:12

I said that about the nits and babies in 9 months a week ago.
Was also randomly wondering about the people who have lip plumpers Grin, they'll have to live with deflated lips for a while.
I'll have to live with pire white (not grey) roots for a while Sad

BettyIsMyFavouriteSquirrel · 22/03/2020 22:16

I think spending on non-essentials will go down massively while people try to build savings, the same way people who were starved during the war spent the rest of their lives making sure there was always too much food in their houses.

DownyBuds · 22/03/2020 22:22

I was thinking today what a strain this is going to put on some families. Keep hearing so many stories on here of dhs who just sound awful.

Sparklingbrook · 22/03/2020 22:23

I have wondered about people who have medical conditions that mean they have to self isolate as they have received a letter but have never revealed they have had or have that condition to their family.

People who have had to postpone their weddings. How many will not actually marry in the end.

userxx · 22/03/2020 22:24

it will take, at most couple of months after it's over for us to return to normal

Do you really think that? I think a recession is unlikely, a depression on the other hand......

Squirrel away every penny you have. This is going to be life changing for the majority of us.

SageRosemary · 22/03/2020 22:26

I predict headscarves will make a comeback!

TheReelSlimShady · 22/03/2020 22:27

I wonder if dating will become much harder. The acid test for pairing up will become 'could i isolate with this person for 3 months' ?

I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing by the way, and maybe it will make people consider their relationships a bit more, but equally it's hard enough being a 40 something singleton as it is!

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 22/03/2020 22:29

Everyone will grow their hair long whether by choice or not!

Ha, I have clippers Grin I hate long hair.

TheReelSlimShady · 22/03/2020 22:30

I also think we are going to see an lot of god awful self penned novels bursting onto the like of the Kindle store.

Oh and probably a lot of self help 'here's how I made it through the coronapocalypse' shite as well.

When we all know wine is the only answer to that Grin

NoName33 · 22/03/2020 22:30

I can't help but worry for people with eating disorders in this time. As a long term bulimic I am really really struggling with having food in the house...but also trying to avoid going for my daily shop like I would do normally.

I am very much someone who needs to keep myself busy to stop me slipping into my behaviour so really really worried for myself and others should we go into full lockdown. With these food shortages too I am massively struggling with the guilt of bingeing but its not something I can just switch off sadly :(

alloutoffucks · 22/03/2020 22:30

Agree about alcohol dependency rising. I am aware of more day drinking already amongst those I know.
Less people wanting to watch zombie/disaster films series and more call for escapist and feel good stuff.
Reduction in unwanted pets as most breeding will stop.
Reduction in things going to landfill when non essential shops close.
Lots of shops/chains will never reopen. Retail on high streets will never recover.
Once all over a boom in travel, pubs and restaurants.
Willingness to accept more state interference

eaglejulesk · 22/03/2020 22:31

I would love to think that people will adopt a simpler lifestyle, buy less stuff they don't need, travel less, use recyclable options. Connect with their neighbours, help each other.

However, I know that even if they do, it won't last and things will return to normal quite quickly and the world will end up in the same old mess.

NotStayingIn · 22/03/2020 22:32

More people might nearly burn their house down.

(Noooo of course I’m not talking from experience... I meant to put that plastic bowl on the stove and slowly burn it...)

OhTheRoses · 22/03/2020 22:34

Hopefully pubs might close at 11pm again.
More virtual conversations
Wake up call re gratuitous spending as people can't spend and see the result
More flexible working and modernised health service
Higher rates of taxation to pay for the Rishi's promises
Less testing in schools - because not testing was positive

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 22/03/2020 22:35

I think a&e might see a rise in accidents caused by DIY or gardening injuries.

But I suppose they'll see a drop in sports related injuries...

UnrulySalvia · 22/03/2020 22:35

NoName33 you really have my sympathy. Living with an eating disorder is difficult at the best of times let alone when your usual strategies for controlling it have gone up in smoke. Flowers

RhubarbTea · 22/03/2020 22:37

I think the most noticeable thing (although this is really sad and a bit of a downer) is that many many medical processionals with be left with lifelong PTSD and mental health issues after what they are about to see, have to deal with, and the choices they are going to have to make. It will fuck a lot of people up.
I feel really concerned by that. Sad

Coronahomeschoolhell · 22/03/2020 22:38

I think sociologists and epidemiologists (looking at other things, not just corona) will have a field day after. As a scientist this is like one gigantic (tragic) experiment that no ethics committee would ever allow.

Effect on civil liberties - so many countries bringing in measures that could easily be used for nefarious purposes.

But I've also wondered about bigamists and people having affairs having to explain why they are not at 'home', also real hair colour, lifelong obsessions with hand soap so that in 40 years time my DGC are asking granny why there's a massive cupboard devoted to hand soap, sanitiser, loo roll and pasta. Oh and fratricide rates.

Captaindobbin · 22/03/2020 22:40

Decrease in fussy eaters. If the shops don’t have what you like you’ll just have to eat what there is.

Sparklingbrook · 22/03/2020 22:40

Whether in future years any exam results/qualifications from 2020 will be met with raised eyebrows by employers as not being the real picture.
