been doing trips up and down the A30 the last few days delivering bits to vulnerable family members. I reckon I’ve seen probably over a thousand campers, caravans and cars loaded with luggage heading towards Cornwall, full of passengers. Very worried for my gran who lives there. Cornwall is full of old people and has one hospital which only just manages to keep up on a normal day. People running away to their second homes ought to be ashamed.

I live here and work in the main hospital.

If anyone is thinking about coming down then PLEASE DON'T!! If I can live 5 mins from the beach and keep my family indoors all weekend then you can do the same. The hospital cannot and will not cope with what covid-19 will do, don't make it worse than it already is.

Oxyiz · 22/03/2020 16:48

Fuck me, how in God's name are people so stupid? I don't understand. This isn't a vacation time.

PanamaPattie · 22/03/2020 16:50

I have family in Cornwall, so I too hope that Treliske treat locals as a matter of priority. There are only a handful of ICU beds in Cornwall. It couldn’t cope with 20 severe cases of the virus let alone hundreds. People are selfish and stupid. The supermarkets are empty and everywhere is shut. Go home.

hoodathunkit · 22/03/2020 16:50

8It's a shame the holiday parks weren't used to self isolate the vulnerable. Weeks ago the elderly and those with chronic health conditions could've been taken by coach with pre-prepared provisions delivered. Communal spaces like swimming pools and bars obviously should be shut but what a missed opportunity to protect all the vulnerable (whether from city or rural or in-between). Too late now. They could still use the empty holiday homes for women and children who need to flee DV.*

absolutely excellent idea

In fact, if they self isolated for 2-3 weeks in such a way that cross infection could be prevented there could feasibly be a self-contained community where people could socialise (post self isolation) within it even if to a limited degree - e.g. within discrete units of several people providing nobody went outside and supplies were brought in with care.

Just thinking aloud, but am impressed with your idea

Aesopfable · 22/03/2020 16:51

tryingtoprep we stayed in central London on holiday 18 months ago and were shocked to see how little other vehicles reacted to an ambulance with sirens. Here cars try and get out of the way to let them through but noone moved in London. We could only assume it was because they knew the ambulance wouldn’t be able to get through anyway as some cars had nowhere to go but I am not convinced.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 22/03/2020 16:52

We are a bit further up the M5 and we’ve heard the motorway all day. We only hear it when it’s really busy.

My MIL in is cornwall. We aren’t far away. Local beauty spots are rammed and have ice cream cans in car parks.

I can hear BBQ and garden parties all around me. We are staying in, but clearly not many are.

sunnie1992 · 22/03/2020 16:53

Sigh people are idiots.

I definitely would not be heading anywhere that had few ICU beds right now!

If you live in a city, stay there!

alloutoffucks · 22/03/2020 16:53

Vietnam have isolated anyone infectious within complexes. None of this - please stay in doors They have just enforced it.

TheMemoryLingers · 22/03/2020 16:54

Would you say that about migrants? Or adult children of rural dwellers who recently moved to London and other cities? How long should someone have been in an area before you think they're allowed treatment?

There's an obvious difference between someone moving to settle permanently in an area, and someone visiting on holiday at a time when we have been told not to travel.

tryingtoprep · 22/03/2020 16:54

Longwhiskers Of course people should stay put now. As they should have when the risk first started weeks ago. I want a lockdown and have wanted one for weeks. Things would never have got this bad had that hsppened. Unfortunately when people thought it was only Londoners and other urban areas at risk they didn't clamour for it. Glad you live in easy distance of hospitals. Lots and lots of poorer and more vulnerable Londoners don't drive and many especially in outer London have much longer journeys to a hospital. Previous governments should never ever have closed all the local hospitals. This is a UK wide issue. An increasing population and they closed hospitals! How stupid can you get.

Wannabangbang · 22/03/2020 16:54

Makes my bloody boil, this is why it spread so fast in other countries. People leaving for the untouched countryside😣

MinesaBottle · 22/03/2020 16:55

I wish these people would realize that there are real people in these areas with real lives that go on all year, the places don’t just spring to life when second homers rock up. The scenes from Skegness, Snowdonia and Whitstable yesterday were so appalling.

Aesopfable · 22/03/2020 16:55

Giving priority to locals in hospital is a ridiculous idea. And given the limitations of small hospitals I am surprised anyone in Cornwall thinks it a good idea as presumably they would have to queue behind Devon locals if they needed treatment at a bigger centre or if transferred due to lack of space.

Originalyellowbelly · 22/03/2020 16:56

When are people going to realise this is a pandemic, not a fucking holiday!

OrangeSamphire · 22/03/2020 16:57

In practice it wouldn't work like that though @Aesopfable, as when Cornish residents have to use Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, there is already a co-commissioning agreement in place between local authorities and CCGs.

MNnicknameforCVthreads · 22/03/2020 16:57

@hoodathunkit

I can’t believe that any such government dictate (about putting non-residents to the back of the medical queue) would be compatible with doctors ethical standards.

They need to close all holiday parks, campsites and make it illegal to travel to your second home. Pronto.

Hugglespuffed · 22/03/2020 16:58

I don't understand why campsites are even open? They should be forced shut just like restaurants and cafes. People need to take responsibility and not travel but equally I think campsites shouldn't be allowed to be open. Terrible.

It is like all the statuses I saw last week from pubs saying 'thanks to our loyal customers for supporting us during this time' when we were told not to go in them.

I'm appalled at the situation and think a lockdown should happen and sharpish.

StormzyinaTCup · 22/03/2020 16:59

Trying that’s completely irrelevant, it’s a freaking pandemic, you stay where you are and where I imagine you have registered with your GP and you use your area hospitals. You don’t jump in the car and travel 200 miles away. Once you do that I think you should forfeit your chance of expecting to be taken as a priority.

lemontreebird · 22/03/2020 16:59

@hoodathunkit
'It is hard enough for someone like me who has lived in a rural area for 2 years and whose family have lived here for generations. I have faced hostility since I moved here and things are unlikely to get better given the current situation.'

That's appalling. Do you mind me asking (roughly) what area you're in?

Noonzerras · 22/03/2020 17:00

Love webcams showing exactly how empty or full Cornish tourist spots are.

www.aspects-holidays.co.uk/webcams

Cornwall only has one A&E at Truro, but there are walk-in clinics at other hospitals all over Cornwall.

Noonzerras · 22/03/2020 17:00

‘Love webcams’ Grin obviously should be be live.

AlexaAmbidextra · 22/03/2020 17:02

Perhaps they have vulnerable family members who need to be out of the city.

Oh look. The Mumsnet apologist has arrived. There’s one on every thread. Seriously? You think that all these families have a vulnerable member? Of course they don’t. They’re just selfish fuckers who don’t give a shit about anyone else as long as they’re alright.

GrouchoMrx · 22/03/2020 17:02

I think the Daily Mail outrage at everyone flocking to Cornwall and others areas has acted as one giant advertising campaign for spending the lock down in Cornwall.

MowzersAsleep · 22/03/2020 17:03

Christ, the only fucker keeping a distance in the St.Ives webcam is the Seagull.

JamesNesbittsBrows · 22/03/2020 17:03
