So Called Experts/Scientists

AIBU to feel sick of the BBC having so-called experts and scientists on the TV and Radio giving unchallenged advice and opinions about COVID without any balance. OK, so they might have spent decade studying virology, respiratory medicine, ITU or epidemiology but where is Nigel Lawson to reprise his climate change heroics and challenge so-called experts and 'conventional' thinking with his innate expertise and the research he's done himself. He might have been a politician but he didn't let that stop him from challenging so-called experts. We need his like again. Perhaps they could talk about how, surprisingly, vinegar can cure Covid or any of the other things that the Daily Fail tend to say, coffee cures Covid. And causes it too. Or it's all the fault of vaccines?

I can't work out if you're looking for false hope or are just very very confused.

Also, why the need for 'so called'? What do you think it takes to be an expert, if not decades of specialist study and research?

I think you only need to look at the US President's almost-instant mastery of a range of subjects to realise it does not take decades to secure real expertise in something. Just look at his recent insight about Covid. He's also not afraid to change his opinion when circumstances change. Almost Churchillian.

I agree OP I thought we’d got rid of experts in 2016! Where are tv personalities telling us it will all be fine because of British pluck etc!

Coffee cures and causes it? Huh?

You're right OP - they should have you on the news rather than the experts.

RHTawney, spot on. Look what decades of listening to experts achieved. We need Dunkirk spirit. Let's all build respirators.

I'd not seen that Tawney but if recent years have taught the UK anything, it's that the number of social media followers a celebrity has is a key element in how much someone should be listened to. I've not checked but I'd expect Caprice has many more followers than some so-called Dr hence we should all listen to and respect Caprice's expertise on a range of subjects.

This. The BBC have completely failed to report that the Labour Party caused the Coronavirus, but my mate Phil from down the pub swears this is true.

If you are going to have the Chief Scientific Advisor on telly you should give equal weight to Jeremy Clarkson's opinion on what the UK should do.

I'm just sad that it appears Caprice was 'mocked' for trying to help. Either 'fake news' by the media or just a reminder of how unkind some people can be.

Nice to see channel 5 are doing balanced reporting. The left-wing-biased BBC only report facts.

Zilla

Don’t you realise that if you listen to celebs singing Imagine on loop for 3 hours it creates a force field around you that stops CV - TRUFACT

What does that Whitty bloke with his research into Epidemiology know anyway.

My friend swears eating raw garlic 3 times a day works - it certainly guarantees social distancing.

Wasn't it Gove who said he was sick of experts? Thank god we have Trump who has a feeling, just a feeling, that we're going to be alright.

And all those so called experts (and netflix) saying this was foreseen, well that's just ridiculous!

Jeremy Clarkson, Lord Lawson, what other voices of reason should we be insisting join the fourth lecturn on the PM's daily briefings, Don Quixote?

I hope we've not had daily briefings on Saturday and Sunday so the PM is having the weekend off. We can't risk exhaustion from seven day working causing an absence of Churchillian leadership in the days to come.

For those that have missed it the OP is obviously taking the piss.
She comparing this to the EU referendum when the BBC would have some Nobel prize winning economist on saying how and why Brexit would damage the economy and some know nothing Tory backbencher replying "no it won't".

I suppose we can compare this a bit to the reports today that Dominic Cummings championing 'herd immunity' to minimise economic damage and 'if some pensioners die, so what'.

I've been surprised at the invisibility of Gove, Ludo. Hope he and his wife are OK.

My heart was warmed by the efforts celebrities and social media are bringing to the good fight. Where would we be without them, Chazs?

How long until celebrities are broadcasting from ITU (presumably with better PPE than the nurses and doctors have been given so the UK doesn't risk losing any national treasures) like Emma Willis who practically became a midwife.

If you want to listen to real experts in virology OP you need to get yourself down to Wetherspoon's, it's full of them.
Very talented lot, Wetherspoons customers, they were all trade experts last year.

They’ll probably wheel out Farage who will bleat on about the squillions he would have put into the NHS so people will only get good British viruses not viruses that don’t meet the points based criteria.

For those that have missed it the OP is obviously taking the piss.

Does anyone else miss the days when this didn't need explaining on MN?

I'm waiting for someone to swan in and declare the OP offensive. They will doubtless explain that it can't be a joke because they don't find it funny.
