self isolation is different to social distancing

self isolation you enter when you or anyone in your family develop a cough or a high temp or you/family member are in a vulnerable group

social distancing is what we should be doing as a minimum all the time. ie. minimise going out.

All those people self-isolating at the drop of a hat you are causing the problem. For self isolation, you WILL need to stockpile food etc because you want to eliminate going out for 14 days.... But if we all self-isolate then we are all going to need to stockpile which is what everyone has just done last week. ie. why the government didn't mandate it in the first place... cause of crazy people.

We are in week 2 of this and we need to have the stamina to get through to month 18. You are not going to do this by self isolating for all that time.

So, people self-isolating and therefore stockpiling are annoying me... AIBU?

partyforone surely it defeats the purpose of stockpiling(since January ffs ) if every time you use something from your stash you run out to replace it. the point of a stash is that you use it.

If there was justice in the world hoarders would have a burst pipe leaking over the toilet paper, mice would have nibbled the pasta and cereal boxes, and their tins of tomatoes would have blown. Enjoy your hoard.

playthestation · 22/03/2020 10:09

I shall just leave this here, for the hard of thinking.

People uneccessarily self-isolating are annoying me AIBU
tulipsrus · 22/03/2020 10:09

No yabvu
If everyone just stayed indoors no-one would get it and we'd be through this a lot quicker

I've been in for a week and intend to stay in this week, I haven't stockpiled anything, just normal shop. You don't need that much stuff

WhereverIMayRoam · 22/03/2020 10:09

I know you’re talking about the UK @Alialialiali. What I pointed out was that you demonstrated yesterday that you didn’t understand the difference between isolating, distancing and lockdown. Judging by your ranting on this thread you’re as ignorant today as you were yesterday.

pennylane83 · 22/03/2020 10:09

Are we going to have to 14 day self isolate over and over again every time we have a cough, sniffle, bit of a temperature until a time when the government tells us we no loner need to. How many times are workplaces going to pay you for self isolating for 14 days.

Alialialiali · 22/03/2020 10:09

@MitziK
It'll mean that they're less likely to be out over the next few days because they'll have their two weeks' worth of stuff already, making it more likely things will be back in the shops sooner.
lol, yes. I went out to get bits and bobs last night. It was serene. It's the old people I worry about though.

ghostyslovesheets · 22/03/2020 10:10

I haven’t stockpiled I’ve just purchased what we needed - I have delivery slots for the next two weeks as I book ahead and always have - after that I can’t book

You seem confused about things

RHTawneyonabus · 22/03/2020 10:10

I’m going to keep off Mumsnet for a while now, people are angry because others are self isolating‘unnecessarily’, because people are panic buying, because they don’t believe they are key workers and sending their kids to school, because they can’t control their teenagers, because they saw them in the street or in the shop. Etc etc etc

Piggywaspushed · 22/03/2020 10:11

FFS you cannot go out with a mask on if your are self isolating. You cannot go out at all. I am going to report this thread OP.

Stronger76 · 22/03/2020 10:12

You'd be surprised how many previously self-isolating students tried to come into school on Friday - it wasn't me who was ill/it's my brother with a cough/I had tonsillitis not coronavirus/I just want to see my friends etc. And parents at my kid's school making excuses for little Johnny to go in as 'we've only self-isolated as a precaution' but now it's his last day somehow there's no risk?

Morons.

Aesopfable · 22/03/2020 10:13

The sooner EVERYONE does it the faster this will be over.

But that is not true is it? If we wanted it to be over quickly we would just have carried on as normal. Lots of people would get it, lots of people would die, but it would be over quicker.

MinkowskisButterfly · 22/03/2020 10:13

Even in self-isolation you can go out if absolutely neccessary just take precautions. You can't expect the entire nation to have 2 weeks worth of goods stockpiled for the next 18 months can you?

@Alialialiali seems like YOU are confused, in self isolation you CANNOT go out even for two minutes. You stay in your house/flat and you DO NOT leave. You request help if you need something, help from friends, via social media, even corner shops are saying contact them and they will deliver.

Yesterday we had 233 deaths in the uk. Two weeks yesterday Italy has 233 deaths. I would much rather people were overly cautious rather than be dicks. We can't stop what is now coming (I refer you again back to italy), we have already created what will come in the following weeks but if we start now then maybe we can limit some of the devastation.

CottonSock · 22/03/2020 10:13

Im annoyed that the Nhs have not started testing staff and their families who are self isolating. Putting the remainder under strain for many colds and coughs that are not cv.

StormBaby · 22/03/2020 10:14

You have the exact same attitude as the managers at work. I've been feeling "off" all week with a heavy chest but no firm symptoms and work have made me feel like I'm over reacting and scoffed at me. Friday i started to wheeze, now in bed with a fever and short of breath, feeling like death. Can hardly hold my phone. How many people have I infected? I should've told my work to get stuffed days ago.

stophuggingme · 22/03/2020 10:15

What if you wake up with the symptoms and have no food, nobody to get you any and there are no deliveries?
This could happen to a lot of people
Some degree of preparedness now appears to be vital although of course that doesn’t involve buying eighty five packs of toilet roll and thirty kilos of rice

JustMySize · 22/03/2020 10:16

I can understand those on low incomes not having enough food in their homes for a couple of weeks but I feel the majority of people would have things in their cupboards that would last them.

Even without this virus do people not think they need to plan ahead for emergencies, in winter for instance, when I was a child we used to be snowed in for more than a couple of weeks and we managed.

It wasn't called panic buying or stock piling, it was the sensible planning of our parents, which I am thankful to say was passed on to me, I always have some long-life milk at the back of the cupboard, tins of soup/veg/steak in gravy even. Yes we are running out of bread, you can live without that for a while. We are running our of eggs, that will be harder for us but we will manage.

So Alialialiali, in my opinion, you are being very unreasonable.

In my opinion those who are not essential workers should all self-isolate for the foreseeable.

hoxtonbabe · 22/03/2020 10:16

@pennylane83

I was thinking about this just this morning. If We’re back to normal after 14 days then we pick up another cough I suppose we have to go on full isolation mode again

x2boys · 22/03/2020 10:17

Problem is Orange you will get people deciding that shoppers are not in a vulnerable group just by appearance,my dh is considered vulnerable as he's just been diagnosed with Diabetes and has only just this week been prescribed medication ,but you wouldn't know to look at him,my ds2_is also vulnerable as he has learning disabilities

ZaZathecat · 22/03/2020 10:20

I suspect the people who are selfishly stockpiling are also the people selfishly continuing to go to pubs, cafes, gyms etc. as they want to take as much advantage as they can before a proper lockdown happens, then be drowning in pasta and bog rolls when it does.

Ariela · 22/03/2020 10:21

I think everyone should listen to this UK A&E doctor:

listen, and heed his advice

HoffiCoffi13 · 22/03/2020 10:21

If We’re back to normal after 14 days then we pick up another cough I suppose we have to go on full isolation mode again

Yes, you do. But hopefully the more people that are staying at home due to coughs, and the more people are washing their hands and keeping 2 meters apart, the less likely you are to pick up another cough when you go out.

Alialialiali · 22/03/2020 10:22

Maybe I am confused. Who knows? Here's the guidance. I'm just going through it more. The other day Boris said while self isolating if you really need to go out go out but take precautions.

I just can't see how you're supposed to carry 2 weeks worth of stuff all the time without clearing the shelves.

www.gov.uk/government/publications/covid-19-stay-at-home-guidance/stay-at-home-guidance-for-households-with-possible-coronavirus-covid-19-infection

I'm sure we can work this out without getting hysterical and rude...(a minority)

OP posts:
Imstillskanking · 22/03/2020 10:22

This bullshit is exactly why this virus has already spread to so many people.

STAY AT HOME. STOP SPREADING THE VIRUS

HoffiCoffi13 · 22/03/2020 10:24

I personally think the more people who self isolate the better. Spain, France and Italy have shown us that the social distancing measures are not enough.
Also, did you know that the government projections for numbers of infections/deaths with their current measures are based on the assumption that 50% of people will not comply? How awful that they have to assume that 50% of us will not do what is necessary to save other people’s lives.
So people going above and beyond are not the ones to be criticised, IMO.

LKLZ · 22/03/2020 10:24

This LBC interview with Dr Jack should be passed to everyone.
It made me cry.
We should all be indoors 100% expect for necessary journeys.
It is our job to save the NHS for those in it and who need it.
BJ should lock us down ASAP.
