People uneccessarily self-isolating are annoying me AIBU

self isolation is different to social distancing

self isolation you enter when you or anyone in your family develop a cough or a high temp or you/family member are in a vulnerable group

social distancing is what we should be doing as a minimum all the time. ie. minimise going out.

All those people self-isolating at the drop of a hat you are causing the problem. For self isolation, you WILL need to stockpile food etc because you want to eliminate going out for 14 days.... But if we all self-isolate then we are all going to need to stockpile which is what everyone has just done last week. ie. why the government didn't mandate it in the first place... cause of crazy people.

We are in week 2 of this and we need to have the stamina to get through to month 18. You are not going to do this by self isolating for all that time.

So, people self-isolating and therefore stockpiling are annoying me... AIBU?

I usually buy in bulk and have been stocking up since january. This means that for the past two weeks, my shop has been only replacements for anything used, so myself and adult son can self isolate. In theory this should free up goods for those who can't store/afford food. Self isolation means we are unlikely to need hospital treatment, leaving resources for those who must work and are taking huge risks to help the sick.

Duchessofblandings · 22/03/2020 09:56

YAB completely U.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 22/03/2020 09:57

The government needs to introduce rationing

Xenia · 22/03/2020 09:57

However if you just distance as I am doing but might catch it you would then need 14 days of food supplies in the house and the state will not be bringing them to you so not surprisingly people have to stock up 14 days worth surely - in effect the state is telling them to (certainly all those without a family member nearby who could drop shopping at the door)

ImTheCaddy · 22/03/2020 09:57

Yes I sort of understand. I have a friend who is getting people to do her shopping etc for no reason.

However everyone who self isolates is one more person I don't have to come into contact when I'm out.

My boss is making us be in the office

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 22/03/2020 09:57

Planning to go to the shop maybe once a week (it's only a 2 minute walk) to get essentials.
Then you will be social-distancing. Self-isolating means you do not go out, even for food.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/03/2020 09:58

If you are self isolating because of symptoms, you CANNOT go out.

TheBananaInPyjamas · 22/03/2020 10:00

@NotEveryThingIsBlackandWhite

Yeah you're right, not full isolation yet!

Alialialiali · 22/03/2020 10:01

lol, and this was my entire point.
About 80% of us have gone out and bought AT LEAST 2 weeks worth of stuff (and possibly more if you're honest) and then are moaning that the shelves are empty not realising YOU caused the problem.

If I wake up with a temp, I either get someone to get me food or I get a delivery or I wear a mask and go out myself to stock up for 14 ACTUAL days of no going out. As it is you guys went out, cleared the shelves then booked up all the slots and the sad old grannies didn't even stand a chance.

Is this a joke?

For God's sake, how far does this have to get before people take it seriously?

You cannot be too cautious at a time like this. Nobody should be leaving their house at all unless it is absolutely essential, and those who still need to go into work should be taking stringent precautions. If anyone has even the slightest whiff of a cough of a temperature then they need to immediately self isolate.

WhereverIMayRoam · 22/03/2020 10:02

@Alialialiali yesterday you thought Ireland was on lockdown when actually we’re observing social distancing rules so you’re probably not the best person to explain all this Hmm.

Beesisabuzzin · 22/03/2020 10:03

You're being a dick. Government advice is stay home unless you have to make a necessary trip out for food, walk the dog, exercise.

FreakStar · 22/03/2020 10:03

You don't need to stockpile to last 14 days!

How much do these people eat? And don't most people do a weekly or fortnightly shop anyway?

hoxtonbabe · 22/03/2020 10:04

I started off being very good, sticking to only what I needed until I realised I couldn’t get what I needed unless I woke up at 6am, ready to wait in a queue for hours on end. I got the odd loo roll here and there so have about 3 packs of then 9 roll which will last 2-3 weeks, I stocked up from the local butcher who doesn’t appear to be running low on anything but he has long queues. I’m glad I did this because yesterday my DS2 and I woke up coughing. It could just be a minor standard cough and it only seems to be an issue in the morning, the rest of the day we are fine but I’m not taking any chances so we are self isolating now and had I not got all those bits beforehand I’d be stuffed.

I am isolated as it is, I’ve never been someone to want or have lots of friends and it is literally me, and my 2 sons, I have no one else to call on. We don’t all have a long list of friends or super friendly/ helpful neighbours ( mine downstairs are either vulnerable or so disgusting with their hygiene I wouldn’t ask them even if they were the last people on earth) so whilst I’ve not taken the mick and got 25 bags of pasta and case loads of beans ( in fact I have one packet of pasta and 2 tins of beans) I did add on a little bit extra here and there and that will now help us through what we as a family are facing now.

Alialialiali · 22/03/2020 10:05

@whereverimayroam
I'm not in Ireland... and presumably you're not in the uk. Probably we have different rules. I'm talking about the UK

OP YABU for posting this thread. If people feel they need to self isolate then they are free to do so.

Judging by how many people are refusing to self distance (see parks, beaches and out in the streets) unnecessarily close to others possibly passing the virus on unwittingly.

BertieBotts · 22/03/2020 10:05

Who are you talking to OP with your "YOU"?

If you've also bought 14 days worth of food then surely that is the same thing?

And how do you get a mask, anyway? AFAIK they are sold out, everywhere.

crustycrab · 22/03/2020 10:06

"If I wake up with a temp, I either get someone to get me food or I get a delivery or I wear a mask and go out myself to stock up for 14 ACTUAL days of no going out."

No you do not go out mask or no mask. What is so difficult to understand? How much food do you think you'll realistically need for 2 weeks? Not much. You do the sensible thing and make sure you have enough in now.

Thefaceofboe · 22/03/2020 10:06

They are different things but isolating is better than social distancing so don’t complain. The more people indoors the better

KittyJune · 22/03/2020 10:06

ALL SELF ISOLATING IS NECESSARY AT THIS TIME. People not self isolating are frankly not doing enough. YABVVVVVVVVVVVU.

pennylane83 · 22/03/2020 10:06

What if you've already self isolated for 14 days therefore of the assumption that you are now clear of symptoms - are you expected to continue to social distance for the next 12-18 months.

Orangeblossom78 · 22/03/2020 10:07

If they are taking online delivery slots from the vulnerable who really need them that is annoying.

Waitrose emailed to say please can people not in the groups consider coming into the shop and getting food to free up slots for the more vulnerable

Littlemissdaredevil · 22/03/2020 10:07

YABU

I am socially distancing because I am pregnant. My elderly inlaws are choosing self isolate and not go out at all. They haven’t stockpiled. The have family who can leave essentials on the doorstep.

What hacks me off is when random people tell me I must self isolate when they guidance says self isolation. I’m only going out it I have to.

MitziK · 22/03/2020 10:07

Nah, I'm fine with fewer people out and about all the time. It'll mean that they're less likely to be out over the next few days because they'll have their two weeks' worth of stuff already, making it more likely things will be back in the shops sooner.

Let them isolate.

sunshinesupermum · 22/03/2020 10:08

I am self isolating because OH has had the symptoms - we have some stock of food and essentials (not enough for two weeks though) and my next door neighbour has kindly offered to get anything we might need. Am glad I don't live in a remote area tbh.
