Lockdown is not the answer

We have a vulnerable family member and have been isolating for 9 days. This is unsustainable. It will drive us mad.

Whilst it was just the vulnerable we could cope as we could still go out to walk. We have no garden.

If the crazy want to carry on mixing. Let them. The vulnerable can hide if they choose.

Test like South Korea and isolate the pockets of disease.

We should not be allowing governments to use this as a way to take away our freedom.

@Dongdingdong he has some very valid points actually and let's be honest, this whole thing hasn't been handled well from the off. I actually don't know how lockdown is meant to work in some situations - I'm carer for my disabled mother so am I still allowed to go in to her if lockdown actually happens? it's not my job so where do I stand with that?

ShanghaiDiva · 22/03/2020 10:49

If you want to see what happens after the lockdown phase, look at what is happening in China now and how they are managing the process to minimise a second wave.

Miljea · 22/03/2020 10:51

Anyway, all this is now academic, isn't it?

I personally read the article with interest, rather than with a closed mind; and I am of the opinion that the colossal economic fall out of our course of action will dwarf the human cost of this.

Mysocalledlifexx · 22/03/2020 10:52

Lock down has to happen, yeah we may go crazy for months but im all for it to save peoples lives. Scary times just have to deal with it the best we can.

AutumnRose1 · 22/03/2020 10:53

And people keep saying “look at Italy.”

I think the death rate from a pandemic would be literally a 1000 times higher than this.

I still find the calmest among us are those with underlying health conditions, just an observation. Maybe we’re more used to the fear and pneumonia etc

I think a massive expansion of palliative care would have been better, I’d volunteer and certainly will if we get to that stage.

Duchessofblandings · 22/03/2020 10:53

Well if Peter Hitchens says so, it must be true 😂😂😂

mrshoho · 22/03/2020 10:53

@twosoups1972 That is our plan though. These measures will suppress the virus spread to give the NHS some chance of dealing with the car crash heading its way. The measures are to control the waves so we my have 6 months of distancing followed by a period where it spreads and then we start all over. It is depressing but the reality. It is the only way our hospitals can possibly deal with and it's still going to be horrendous.

AutumnRose1 · 22/03/2020 10:54

Miljea “ I am of the opinion that the colossal economic fall out of our course of action will dwarf the human cost of this.”

Yes. Death from starvation or homelessness etc is coming for millions.

mrshoho · 22/03/2020 10:56

and all hope's are to create a successful vaccine as well as successful treatment with approved existing drugs.

littlebitwooway · 22/03/2020 10:57

That article misses key points. There is no immunity like with flu. Also what is he actually proposing we do?

Babybel90 · 22/03/2020 10:57

I’m so sick of hearing people complain about self-isolating like they’re being imprisoned and tortured.

I’ve got HG and I haven’t left my house for 6 weeks, for two of those weeks I didn’t leave my bed and I’ve been vomiting at least 5 or 6 times a day, I can’t eat anything much or drink much, I can manage to get in the bath and brush my teeth maybe once every 4-5 days. It’s horrible, it’s like being tortured.

So I really think I’d be quite glad to feel well but have to stay in the house, eat what I fancy, read some books and watch some TV.

ShanghaiDiva · 22/03/2020 10:59

Exactly.
When did sitting about watching the tv and playing on the x box become so tough..?

BananaChocolateLump · 22/03/2020 11:00

Yes it fucking is. You are stupid.

willdoitinaminute · 22/03/2020 11:02

I’m afraid I am beginning to think that survival of the fittest is the way this is going to pan out. Fittest of body or fittest of brain.
I’m afraid the hard of thinking and the terminally stupid are not going to fair well.
The government now have access to phone gps details (apparently anonymous) this is how they are monitoring public compliance with social distancing.

LangClegsInSpace · 22/03/2020 11:03

Three weeks ago this would have been feasible. Not now.

FizzyGreenWater · 22/03/2020 11:04

Yes it IS the answer.

AutumnRose1 · 22/03/2020 11:05

Shanghai “ When did sitting about watching the tv and playing on the x box become so tough..?”

It’s about ruining the economy forever. Who wants to survive and find themselves queuing for government rations? Those people can self isolate.

I always said, if something like this happens, I can’t start again money wise, I’ll have to kill myself. Many of us will. I’ll take quality of life over quantity any day.

LoveFameTragedy · 22/03/2020 11:05

Lockdown will be shit, but considerably less shit than being dead.

AutumnRose1 · 22/03/2020 11:06

“ but considerably less shit than being dead.”

I’m SO JEALOUS of dad being dead. I’ve been saying that since he died. No more troubles.

Hamlet recitation, anyone?

RedToothBrush · 22/03/2020 11:06

If there is no lockdown there will be no hospitals for anything.

It's not about the idiots killing themselves off, it's about how someone who is undergoing cancer treatment can't as there no staff or only infected staff. It's about how if you injure yourself whilst doing the cooking there is no A and E because your finger hanging off isn't serious enough. It's about how if you have an elderly relative who falls at home, they due lying on the floor because there are no ambulances left to get to them.

It's about the complete overload of the system to in effect there is no healthcare for anyone for any other reason than covid-19.

We are already on track for this.

Havanananana · 22/03/2020 11:07

Lockdown is the only answer. Too many people in the UK have simply not understood what is happening and why it is important to keep contact with other people to a minimum. The newspapers this morning are full of photos of people congregating in the Lake District and at the coast and stories of people partying at home all night with friends.

Look at this morning's statistics, which are also available in the Sunday papers:

Germany is in almost total lockdown - much stricter than in the UK. It has a population of over 80 million - about 25% larger than that of the UK. Confirmed cases 18,610 (because they are testing as many as possible showing symptoms rather than waiting for them to be admitted to hospital) but deaths only 55.

UK - Confirmed cases only 5,027. Deaths 234. 54 in the last 24 hours, which is just about the same number as the total deaths in Germany.

The UK is testing people too late and has introduced the lockdown too late. While most people are getting the message, a significant number seem to believe that they are invincible, and by continuing to ignore the restrictions are putting everyone else at risk.

Thinkinghappythoughts · 22/03/2020 11:08

The OP is right testing is the way to go. Testing allows identification of cases, leading to isolation of the infectious, allowing the rest of the population to carry on with everyday activities that support the economy.

Short-sightedness and a blanket one-size-fits-all strategy will work for a while, but its going to cause big problems in the long run.

But if large-scale testing isn't possible (or can't be organised properly - not the same thing!), then lockdown is all that is left.

AutumnRose1 · 22/03/2020 11:08

Anyway, if this gets beaten back, Mother Nature will be back soon with something much worse. The earth cannot sustain this level of overpopulation. It had to fight back.

nellodee · 22/03/2020 11:09

People still do not understand.

If we do not lockdown we will have tens of thousands of people dying PER DAY. Maybe even into 6 figures.

LOCK DOWN NOW!

RedToothBrush · 22/03/2020 11:10

Also if we don't lock down we potentially have an issue with imports as travel to the uk is restricted by other countries. We import most of our food. We also don't have enough workers to harvest our domestic crops.
