We are going to be like Italy

Just like Italy we will be in a few weeks. The park is packed with children!! Weddings are still going ahead with hundreds of people, no one cares. There will be high risk people at the weddings because their mentality is we are not on lockdown so we will continue as normal.

Unfortunately I know a lot of people who are not taking the virus seriously and mock those that do, really pissing me off

I think even Rishi thinks this government is frighteningly offhand about it. You can see the way he gets a kind of rictus "oh ffs what is he saying now" look on his face.
I think things would have been different (slightly) had it been someone with less ego than Boris.

Angryrant55 · 21/03/2020 13:24

Buzzfeed - 'A lockdown at least in part reminiscent of what has happened in Italy and France is still being considered at the top of government if the situation worsens in the weeks ahead, despite Downing Street denying that it would happen. “This will be the hardest decision he will ever make,” a source said of the PM.'

VanGoghsDog · 21/03/2020 13:25

Sorry, we are going to be worse than Italy, we are on a higher projectors, we put measures in place too late and we have fewer ICU and general hospital beds.

2 weeks ago here in Ireland there were people mocking those that had prepared for the virus and said it would be coming with big consequences. those same people have gone very quiet now!

Northernsoullover · 21/03/2020 13:29

My friend (a real first hand one) posted a picture of group PT taking place in the park this morning. People have no common sense.

whatashower · 21/03/2020 13:31

RedLentil
I just dont buy blaming Boris for government messaging much as I am not a fan and not a Tory. Government has to balance guidance and language with civil unrest. People are capable of talking to each other and it really is not about doing things until you are absolutely banned from doing them. They have been clued up enough to buy freezers ffs, and shopping till they dropped. But you are right NHS underfunding is coming home to roost.

LottieBees19 · 21/03/2020 13:32

We will be much worse than Italy. Italy has double the ICU beds.
12 per 100,000 v 6 per 100,000
They didn’t have 90 percent occupancy at the beginning of the chris.
Only the fittest will be treated.
So Please please heed the advice re social, distancing !!!

Mumpower123 · 21/03/2020 13:35

Holy shit! What goes through people's heads? Oh that's there country, it won't happen to us!? Or just think oh we will be alright , there's no cases near me? I have had double pneumonia and it is not good. You are basically drowning . I do not want to catch this bastard . I've got two kids and their dad already died of bronculiarpneumonia. Can't spell it but you know what I mean. I'm terrified of leaving my kids alone.

Helpmechangemymindsetplease · 21/03/2020 13:37

'A lockdown at least in part reminiscent of what has happened in Italy and France is still being considered at the top of government if the situation worsens in the weeks ahead, despite Downing Street denying that it would happen. “This will be the hardest decision he will ever make,” a source said of the PM.'

Why in the coming weeks though, why not now? Why wait for the infection to spread further and for more people to die?

I don’t understand why lockdown is such a difficult decision either. Other countries have managed it. Something about our libertarian tradition that Boris was on about, but I would rather less people died.

VanGoghsDog · 21/03/2020 13:37

It's at times like this (not that there are many "times like this") you realise the point of a prime minister.

And ours is probably the worst we could have had in this situation.

Where are the grown ups!?

FreakStar · 21/03/2020 13:38

Does anyone know if Italy completely closed their schools- or whether they were open for 'key workers' like British schools? I'm scared that with the number of children still coming to school next week it won't be enough to slow the spread significantly.

Angryrant55 · 21/03/2020 13:39

Harry Cole - 'Just drove past Hyde Park on way to no10 presser. It’s rammed with people. Lots huddled in groups. Ffs. This is why we are not allowed nice things.'

FreakStar · 21/03/2020 13:40

Fuck tradition- this life and death!

VanGoghsDog · 21/03/2020 13:42

A family member of mine truly believes that since we voted to leave the EU we won't be as badly affected as Italy. I just don't have the words to argue with them.

Atleastthedoglovesme · 21/03/2020 13:43

I work in a library - we closed our doors at 5pm on Friday.

We have been busy ALL WEEK, mostly with elderly borrowers. Literally hundreds of them.

Some of them even stocking up with children's books as they will be looking after their grandchildren from next week onwards!

Children and families were also coming in, I saw people who were poorly and coughing. None of them gave a damn. Mums meeting up and bringing children in after school, a few grandparents with children too.

We ran out of hand sanitizer, hand wash etc days ago and yet we were expected to stay open. I was coughed on and one man even was spitting on me when he spoke - I feel I have been put in danger all so people could get books.

Some people were annoyed to hear we were closing our doors! Although most understood.

I was so shocked to see people's attitude, especially those elderly.

TheCanterburyWhales · 21/03/2020 13:44

Freak- all schools from nursery to university closed by govt order (also state and private) from 4th March.

VanGoghsDog · 21/03/2020 13:44

It would be nice if they defined key workers too. I work for a bank and all we've heard is "some bank workers" so we don't know if it applies to us at all (we're not a retail bank) and, if so, which workers?

YappityYapYap · 21/03/2020 13:45

Restaurants have had to close so I can't see how venues are able to still provide seating catering?

TheCanterburyWhales · 21/03/2020 13:46

Then for 4 days the buildings were open for admin staff and for teachers to remove their stuff, but you had to ring first. Then with the lockdown on 10th they have been totally closed since.

vitaminC · 21/03/2020 13:51

@FreakStar French schools and nurseries are accepting children of all healthcare workers, on presentation of their professional licence.
All other children are being taught online.
Mine are teens, so it doesn't apply, but they are loosely following their regular timetable via Twitch and other applications and submitting their homework via the school's extranet.
Schools have loaned computers to families without one.

IpanemaGallina · 21/03/2020 13:51

Reading some of the above, I really can’t understand people’s mentality at the moment but then I’m asthmatic and know from experience how frightening it is to be short of breath.

Derbygerbil · 21/03/2020 13:52

Downing Street is still considering a partial lockdown of London in the coming weeks.

“In the coming weeks” Hmm

We don’t have “weeks” ffs.

Seventyone72seventy3 · 21/03/2020 13:53

Freak- all schools from nursery to university closed by govt order (also state and private) from 4th March.

Several large areas were closed before this - Emilia Romagna where I am closed on 24th February along with Lombardy and Veneto I think (although all the days seem the same now!)
