Banning sake of alcohol

nicknackpaddy · 21/03/2020 08:23

I wonder if shops should voluntarily stop this or the government should ban it to help protect vulnerable children and adults from the expected rise in domestic violence cases.

One gin manufacturer is stopping production and making hand sanitizers instead, maybe others could do this too.

Yabu.
As bad as DV is. Yabu

lubeybooby · 21/03/2020 08:27

my ex didn't need a single drop of alcohol to do his jekyll and hyde thing

a ban on alcohol would cause more problems than it creates

PardonWhat · 21/03/2020 08:28

Yabu

QuizzlyBear · 21/03/2020 08:29

I think if DV is taking place in the home then sadly enforced contact 24/7 is going to trigger it whether alcohol is present or not.

I think alcohol (in most cases) will enable parents to deal with their stress - I'm talking a glass of wine in the evening, not vodka on cornflakes.

Maybe restrict the sale of 'hard liquor' that's only really designed to get people utterly hammered?

turnandfacethenamechange · 21/03/2020 08:29

Red wine is the only thing giving me worry-free moments at the moment.

Metoyoutoo · 21/03/2020 08:30

Wtf. Alcohol is what’ll get me through the boredom of this and I barely drink

Hingeandbracket · 21/03/2020 08:30

What an utterly ridiculous idea.

hamstersarse · 21/03/2020 08:31

Get. A. Grip

TeddyIsaHe · 21/03/2020 08:31

Jesus wept, how am I going to manage home schooling without a glass of wine at the end of the day?!

I do understand what you’re saying, and the thought of people being trapped in a house with an abuser is hideous. But donating to women’s aid and the NSPCC will go further than banning booze.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 21/03/2020 08:32

Alcohol doesn’t cause DV. It is used as an excuse for it.

YABVU.

scissy · 21/03/2020 08:33

Maybe go and read about Prohibition in the USA OP because it worked so well.

Isawthathaggis · 21/03/2020 08:33

I have four children five and under, a dog and a grumpy husband in the house for the foreseeable.
Was going to happily rotate days of packed lunches in national trust parks while walking the dog far away from people and swimming in virus killing chlorine water.

Wine is the only thing giving me hope at the moment.

DingleberryRose · 21/03/2020 08:34

Alcohol absolutely batters your immune system. Anyone still drinking at the moment is bonkers!

Hingeandbracket · 21/03/2020 08:35

Yep Prohibtion was a great success in the USA. Also OP seems to have failed to take account of how much is already out there. Presumably once that ran out people would start breaking into closed pubs etc. It is one of the daftest ideas I have ever heard - is OP from a government policy unit??

longwayoff · 21/03/2020 08:36

YABVVVU. And I dont drink.

CrowleysBentley · 21/03/2020 08:37

Where do all the alcoholics that suddenly have to go cold turkey get help and treatment if that happens? It can be very dangerous for some alcoholics to just stop drinking without medical support.

DGRossetti · 21/03/2020 08:38

Looks in cupboards. Sees whole beer and wine brewing kits still neatly packed from last use ....

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 21/03/2020 08:38

Theres enough nanny state at the moment, with good reason.

Let's not kill all the fun eh

Mrsjayy · 21/03/2020 08:39

The though t of vulnerable children and women stuck at home at is horrifying it really is but banning alcohol really isn't going to solve anything.

Aragog · 21/03/2020 08:40

I don't think it would help. Unfortunately it wouldn't be that simple. Those abusers would then find the lack of alcohol and it's unavailability as another reason to abuse.

Isthistrueor · 21/03/2020 08:40

YABU and I don’t even drink.

Isthistrueor · 21/03/2020 08:41

A glass of wine or gin can make life a lot more bearable for some people, even I accept that as a non drinker. It’s miserable enough out there without promoting prohibition.

sashh · 21/03/2020 08:42

Ridiculous, if things get really bad then we might be using vodka to clean.

People who are dependent would end up in A and E after suddenly stopping, and A and E can do without that.

Maybe restrict the sale of 'hard liquor' that's only really designed to get people utterly hammered?*

Not really, I love a single malt, but rarely have more than 1. Wine - I can easily finish a bottle.

footprintsintheslow · 21/03/2020 08:43

I'm also concerned for all the people stuck in with dv and child abuse. But I don't think banning alcohol is the answer.

Ihateselfishbastards · 21/03/2020 08:44

Go do one!
