If there was a coronavirus test available for £6 would you buy it from Amazon

If you could buy a test from somewhere like Amazon would you?

It occurs to me if you could test yourself, then you could go back to something of a normal existence. Work, shopping, family visiting.

To me Amazon would be the best distributor and pharmacies of course.

My god yes !

Nmagain · 25/03/2020 17:31

I’d get it because my work doesn’t believe anyone when they say they have symptoms and need to self isolate. They think they’re after a free holiday

Dongdingdong · 25/03/2020 17:31

I don’t see the point of the test for anyone other than NHS staff and frontline/essential workers. You could test negative today but positive tomorrow. What are you meant to do - test every single day?

MyDcAreMarvel · 25/03/2020 17:36

They are hoping it’s unlikely you can catch it twice.

Dongdingdong · 25/03/2020 17:44

They are hoping it’s unlikely you can catch it twice.

“Hoping” isn’t exactly reassuring though is it?

And like I say, you could test negative one day then catch it the next. So what is the point?

FourTeaFallOut · 25/03/2020 17:45

There are lots of reasons why it might be useful. DH might have to move out because I need to be shielded, if it comes to the point where the work he asked to do is no longer possible it would be great to know if he is positive for the virus and not have to live apart from us for however long later it would be to account for catching the illness and then being positive for the virus but without symptoms to avoid bringing it into the house. So, we'd pay a lot more than £6.

PrimalLass · 25/03/2020 17:48

And like I say, you could test negative one day then catch it the next. So what is the point?

Because it's testing whether you have had it.

Zacharyezrarawlings · 25/03/2020 17:52

those saying its no good to know you're negative as you might then catch it next time you go out - the article is talking about an antibody test which shows if you have previously had CV and therefor would have some immunity to it (according to current understanding at least) so it would be massively helpful to know that. Basically if you test positive you can assume you have some immunity.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 25/03/2020 17:52

Thats assuming you get permenant antibodies or that it doesnt mutate (btw theres already 2 strains)

Oblomov20 · 25/03/2020 17:58

God yes. Wouldn't everyone, who could afford it??

LaurieFairyCake · 25/03/2020 18:01

Yes, because I'm completely freaked out that we haven't got it yet and I REALLY want to know we were asymptomatic

We both work in SCHOOLS, in LONDON, and my job is particularly close contact Sad

KettleOn919 · 25/03/2020 18:02

It's thought that if you'd had and recovered from Covid-19, you would gain immunity at least temporarily. Maybe you would lose that protection if there was a second wave later in the year.

Perhaps those of us who tested positive would get an official "It's OK – I've had it!" stamp on our foreheads or something.

Bluntness100 · 25/03/2020 18:02

Yes, and Amazon is a great solution as they have the distribution network, the nhs does not.

At six pounds you can test more than once, when you start to make it expensive people will test once then think twice about doing it a second time, and many people won’t have spare money.

A small profit, should go back to the nhs to help repay the costs it is now enduring. However without making it unaffordable to those on a low income, the test should be available for all, and a family of four, many don’t have twenty four quid to spare. Never mind two or three times.

Because if you test and you’re negative, you’ve not had it. Are you going to test again if you get ill? People shouldn’t be stopped because of cost, and next day delivery from amazon is a brilliant cost effective solution.

Bluntness100 · 25/03/2020 18:04

Because it's testing whether you have had it

That’s an illogical answer. The poster asked what happens if you test and it says negative, which many will have. Then you get symptoms the next day, you need to test again to see if that’s what it is.

That’s why they need to be affordable.

Intruiged · 25/03/2020 18:12

I would pay the NHS for the test, wouldn't trust any test sold by amazon as accurate.

SoftBlocks · 25/03/2020 18:16

Would be happy to pay more than that but to NHS rather than Amazon to support testing of staff.

Snowflakes1122 · 25/03/2020 18:18

Yes, I would. Although being on amazon I’d worry it was fake!

Ruddle91 · 25/03/2020 18:38

I would buy it

mumto2teenagers · 25/03/2020 18:40

Amazon have the delivery capabilities to manage high order volumes and by delivering to peoples homes it means people don’t need to go out to pharmacy or GP to buy a test.

RadioRodeo · 25/03/2020 18:40

Yes, as long as it was approved etc.

NemophilistRebel · 25/03/2020 18:44

If it’s a test for if you’re currently positive or not I don’t see the point

You could be told you are negative, become lax, and then the next week be positive without even knowing

I would on the other hand pay for an antibodies test to find out if I have had it at all

alittleprivacy · 25/03/2020 18:46

Surely if people are out and about, even if they have the antibodies, they could still contribute to spread?

Not likely no. Only people with the virus can spread it. If you are recovered from the virus and have immunity you won't get it again and therefore can't spread it. Once enough people have immunity they act as a type of brake on the spread of the virus, because the virus has less available hosts to spread to. If I'm not immune and I meet an infected person and then meet you, that's 3 hosts for the virus. The original infected person, me and you. If I am immune and meet an infected person, then you, the virus still just has one host. I can't get it, you don't get it and anyone you meet can't get it.

Redcrayons · 25/03/2020 18:49

If it worked the way they say ie you’ve had it and are now immune, and there was enough to make sure all NHS frontline staff can have one first, then yes I would.

I can work from home, my dcs are in last year of school so aren’t missing anything, there’s plenty of people who have a priority over me.

Popuppippa · 25/03/2020 19:07

I would definitely buy them for my family and donate to fund more for NHS workers.

I think they should charge a reasonable amount, similar to a pregnancy test, allow donations over and above the cost and plough all the profit back into the NHS to fund this effort.

It is this test that is the gamechanger as it tests for antibodies that show your immune system has mounted a response to the virus.

Pentium85 · 25/03/2020 20:33

Yes. And would happily pay more
