If there was a coronavirus test available for £6 would you buy it from Amazon

If you could buy a test from somewhere like Amazon would you?

It occurs to me if you could test yourself, then you could go back to something of a normal existence. Work, shopping, family visiting.

To me Amazon would be the best distributor and pharmacies of course.

I would pay for a test from a reliable source - probably up to £50 ish.

flowerycurtain · 25/03/2020 16:19

I'd buy it. And I'd buy it for all my workers (farmer). And I'd buy 20 for the local hospital. And I'd pay a good few hundred quid per test.

Bienentrinkwasser · 25/03/2020 16:20

Given that they are estimating ‘a few million units’ and there are 66 million people in the U.K. I really feel that these ought to be prioritised for frontline staff and other key workers. I will not be buying tests willy Milly and not should anyone else. Goodness, the British people can’t be trusted with toilet paper FFS!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 25/03/2020 16:21

I would pay to check for antibodies. I wouldn't pay to test if I currently had it as that really tells me nothing

Nmagain · 25/03/2020 16:23

Yes. It would be from government just amazon selling it for them apparently. Makes sense as a hell of a lot of people use amazon.

KettleOn919 · 25/03/2020 16:24

Right, say I buy this test and find out that I've already had, and recovered from, Covid-19.

Now that should mean that I'm OK to go out and resume my normal life, safe in the knowledge that I couldn't catch it, wasn't incubating it, and was not infectious to anyone I came into contact with.

But how would other people know that? If I breezed past someone in the supermarket, sat down next to someone on the tube, or booked a GP appointment, how would others be able to tell that I'm "safe" and they have nothing to fear from me?

kimlo · 25/03/2020 16:31

It would need to come with some sort of certificate. Otherwise the people who have been ignoring the guidelines would jist continue to ignore the guidelines thinking they are only goong to get a mild case but thos time saying it's ok I've been tested.

Yes I would pay, if I knew the results were reliable. I could go to work with out worry, and go and visit my Grandma, and basically get on with life.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/03/2020 16:35

Oh, and yes, would happily pay for an accurate test from a reliable provider.

Could we be 100% sure that it was the real deal though?

Nixen · 25/03/2020 16:41

I’d pay a lot more than 6 quid so yes

goingoverground · 25/03/2020 16:45

@GrumpyHoonMain

Would the government care to test it for the general public though? When the test is rolled out it should be for key workers and employers to be able to use as required

Key workers should certainly be the priority but we also really need data on how many people in the general popoulation have been infected to understand the epidemic and what to do next.

Haffiana · 25/03/2020 16:55

It will be Amazon because they have the delivery network to get it to those that order it.

It won't be 'made by' Amazon.

mylul · 25/03/2020 16:57

Yes

thatgingergirl · 25/03/2020 16:58

I agree with KettleOn919. I find out I'm done and dusted with Covid 19 - what then? Surely the test results would need registering/compiling so that when/if sufficient levels of (dare I say herd) immunity are reached, restrictions can start to be lifted?

Would prefer to buy from GP/Chemist anyway, not Amazon.

FourTeaFallOut · 25/03/2020 17:03

Under the title of how to look after your mental well-being while isolating, on the shielding information which was linked under the initial test, which gives more detailed advice it say:

"try spending time with the windows open to let in the fresh air, arranging space to sit and see a nice view (if possible) and get some natural sunlight, or get out into any private space, keeping at least 2 metres away from your neighbours and household members if you are sitting on your doorstep"

So, I'm going in the garden and come in if the neighbours come out.

soloula · 25/03/2020 17:05

I don't get it as is it not relying on people's honesty? I get the purpose for front line workers if the test is done by their employers but surely letting everyone test at home is just open to abuse? What's to stop joe bloggs from saying they've got the antibodies when they've not so they can go back work? Maybe their competitive has opened back up and they're (rightly) worried about losing customers.

Irial · 25/03/2020 17:07

What would testing help though? Not meant to be a sarcastic/goady question.

If you have symptoms, then what would you do differently? We are all (or should be) keeping clean, not mixing with people etc

You might not have it today, but you might have it tomorrow?

FourTeaFallOut · 25/03/2020 17:07

Sorry, wrong thread Blush

CarolHasAnotherUTI · 25/03/2020 17:11

If I knew it was legitimate, absolutely.

TheMemoryLingers · 25/03/2020 17:11

I don't think there are anywhere near enough tests at the moment to provide to the general public. They'll rightly go to NHS workers first, and then others at the top end of the key worker list such as the police.

If, in future, there is an unlimited supply I imagine many employers will be keen to provide them for their workforce - loss in productivity or sick pay costs (where applicable) would outweigh the cost of even a relatively expensive test.

Purplewithred · 25/03/2020 17:14

If there was one that cheap and easily available (and if it was reliable) it would be available nationally for free as it would transform our ability to manage the pandemic.

atvh · 25/03/2020 17:14

I can’t believe they’re planning to distribute via Amazon - the stockpilers will have an absolute field day with this! I’ve already resigned myself to the fact that there’s no chance of getting my hands on one.

feesh · 25/03/2020 17:15

Surely if people are out and about, even if they have the antibodies, they could still contribute to spread?

Olawisk · 25/03/2020 17:19

Yes I’d pay a lot more then £6 for one.. up to a couple hundred easy and more if I actually thought I had it currently.

goingoverground · 25/03/2020 17:25

Possibly @feesh it seems people still shed the virus for some time after they no longer have symptoms but maybe not enough to infect someone else.

iolaus · 25/03/2020 17:28

So you take the test today - it shows negative - what now do you go out? Tomorrow you go to the shop because you 'know' you aren't CV19+ve, while there you come into contact without someone who isn't showing symptoms but is carrying it. You now are infected, your non corona cough hasn't gone yet so you don't realise you have are spreading it
