Is Italy still on total lockdown?

I just wondered if anything was easing up there?
Because it might give us an idea of how long lockdown will last here. I can’t believe it’s going to be six months. Everyone will have gone bust / starved by then if they’ve no money to buy food.

We are not locked down.

mausmausmaus · 19/03/2020 15:21

I don't know anyone in italy, but a friend in china - in a city about 700 miles from wuhan - has been in quarantine for just over two months. no problems with the supply chain for food and pharmaceuticals, just constant temperature checks and checked entry to apartments. free to walk around, but with monitored social distancing measures.

I know money's a worry for all of us, but the stock markets are bust so money is almost irrelevant. the government will have to find a way, wether that be through rationing packages, a universal basic income, or a combination of both. there are too many of us who buy supplies weekly because our income didn't let us stockpile food.

TheCanterburyWhales · 19/03/2020 15:23

Yes and further more restrictive measures are probably going to be brought in.

Butterbear86 · 19/03/2020 15:24

We will be locked down within a few days.

Peak contagion hasn't yet been reached. Expected between next week sometime to beginning of April.
Lockdown is until 3/4 but govt said this morning it is certain to go on longer.

bemoreeverything · 19/03/2020 15:49

We will be locked down within a few days.

Will we?

adiposegirl2 · 19/03/2020 16:03

Will we?

Gosh the denial is real

Growingboys · 19/03/2020 16:04

No need to be snippy @adipose

bemoreeverything · 19/03/2020 16:05

Gosh the denial is real

Denial?

Even after the government categorically stayed this is not happening?

Rosa · 19/03/2020 16:05

yes we are day 10 here ... But we can go to the shops 1 family member at a time and stay 1 m apart. We have no shortages either !

Gonegrey31 · 19/03/2020 16:08

My dd is in Italy studying . It’s manageable . Innovative ways of contact , online lessons and exams . The sober truth about ghastly death rate has brought compliance with rules .

mausmausmaus · 19/03/2020 17:21

the government haven't stated it won't be happening - 'no plans' and 'zero prospects' means nothing - plans and prospects are both, by definition, able to change.

we all could do with some clear communication, but this is politics : it all comes down to semantics.

bemoreeverything · 19/03/2020 17:27

the government haven't stated it won't be happening - 'no plans' and 'zero prospects' means nothing - plans and prospects are both, by definition, able to change.

Eh?

No plans almost certainly means no plans. Of course things can change, but let's not get the truth get in the way of a good post!

People are saying we are going into lockdown tonight. The giver many are saying this is not the plan.

mausmausmaus · 19/03/2020 17:44

'No plans almost certainly means no plans.'

bemoreeverything · 19/03/2020 17:48

I don't really understand what you are arguing about tbh. Nobody is going into bloody lockdown.

KatharinaRosalie · 19/03/2020 17:50

Not only is the lockdown still on, it will be extended beyond the originally planned end date. www.cnbc.com/2020/03/19/italys-death-rate-reaches-record-high-hospitals-in-lombardy-struggle.html

mollypuss1 · 19/03/2020 17:52

Nobody is going into bloody lockdown .... yet

mausmausmaus · 19/03/2020 18:01

words are chosen carefully in these communications for legal reasons. 'we will not go into lockdown' does not mean the same as 'no plans and zero prospects to go into lockdown.

boris says he 'does think, looking at it all' that we can turn the tide'. Maybe he thinks our prospects have changed.

Lockdown isn't something to be scared of, it's the best thing for everyone's safety. It's something we're better doing now rather than later.

Seventyone72seventy3 · 19/03/2020 18:06

Yes @TheCanterburyWhales how much more locked down can we get?! Confused

Sgtmajormummy · 19/03/2020 18:07

In in NE Italy.
More than 400 deaths today. We haven’t peaked. Soon we’ll reach the number of Chinese deaths and more, in a country with a 60million population, much like the UK.

Online rumours are predicting schools closed indefinitely and no more walking outdoors.
They can’t bury the people fast enough so coffins are being transported out by the army.
Nurses are qualifying and on the wards the following day.
It’s grim.

Sgtmajormummy · 19/03/2020 18:13

Just checked. Today we overtook China’s total dead.

sofato5miles · 19/03/2020 18:14

The italy figures today make me despair. So, so sad

adiposegirl2 · 19/03/2020 18:17

After listening to the Prime Ministers update, I still theorise we will be under lockdown by Saturday.

BJ cant confirm as the Government feel it would cause a mass panicked London exodus if he did and he needs time to get the army in place to 'assist' the police at checkpoints around the M25

Seventyone72seventy3 · 19/03/2020 18:21

@Sgtmajormummy what do you mean "no more walking outdoors"?

Sgtmajormummy · 19/03/2020 18:26

No more taking one bag of rubbish to the bin on the road. No more dog walking. One person out of the house for shopping trips, preferably by car. No more chatting on chairs in the garden at a meter’s distance.
