MN yesterday: The schools must be closed! Today: but not for my child!

That's it.

Everyone deserves to have their child in school. Because everyone's job is vital. Suddenly there's no risk to MY CHILD being at school. Only everyone else's kid is a risk/at risk.

This place does my head in sometimes.

Ive got a friend who has been saying how anxious she is about it all for 2 weeks, yet is thrilled today that her 3 yr olds nursery has decided to stick 2 fingers up at the government and stay open anyway.... she's on maternity leave with her younger one so doesn't need the child care any way Hmm

RedRed9 · 19/03/2020 15:21

Absolutely this!!

I can’t believe I’ve the 180 some posters have done in the last few days.

Some people only want to complain.

Cacaca · 19/03/2020 15:21

People on Facebook previously outraged schools were staying open - now actively encouraging you to visit local pubs etc. Can’t make it up.

mrsBtheparker · 19/03/2020 18:38

Double standards are very common in anything regarding children and schools. Most parents want their children to be able to learn and support a leveI discipline but I used to have a phrase when I was working 'Discipline is what the other parents' children need'.

GrumpyHoonMain · 19/03/2020 18:44

A lot of people want to be special. Last week that meant keeping their kids off school despite no symptoms / vulnerable family or friends. This week it means keeping them in school while the plebs (including my family) have to manage without. People are even lying to schools about being key workers

LynnSchmob · 19/03/2020 18:50

Completely agree. Everyone wanted the schools shut and now the reality is setting in.
I think when people where agitating for it they had visions of a long, relaxing summer holiday not being cooped up for months on end with no socialising whatsoever.

Nanna50 · 19/03/2020 18:53

How can people lie about being a key worker, will they not need to evidence it?

GrumpyHoonMain · 19/03/2020 18:56

I think a lot of people are banking on it being so short notice so schools won’t realise or they’ll get a few weeks of free childcare before they’re found out. Sil is a teacher and the schools in her area aren’t going to ask for proof of key worker status for another 1-2 weeks due to staff shortages.

Reginabambina · 19/03/2020 18:58

It’s part of the panic. They wanted someone to do something.

Cheerbear23 · 19/03/2020 19:01

How can people lie about being a key worker, will they not need to evidence it?

Our school have said they will do random checks and ask for proof.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 19/03/2020 19:02

e veryone deserves to have their child in school. Because everyone's job is vital. Suddenly there's no risk to MY CHILD being at school. Only everyone else's kid is a risk/at risk

So the exact same posters who complained about schools being open are now complaining that they are shut

The exact same posters

DrMadelineMaxwell · 19/03/2020 19:06

It's not our school that will be checking.

The parents indicate their role to meet the criteria. Our head tells the county council how many. The council then offer places as appropriate direct to the parents.

They will then take their kids to the school nominated as the local hub school rather than their normal school.

DonkeyKong2019 · 19/03/2020 19:07

Our school have asked for proof of employer and a contact number for the workplace to check.

My 5 year old is in as usual because she is classed as vulnerable. I'm very split on it.

MrsHusky · 19/03/2020 19:07

I wanted the schools closed. i'm now glad they are.

I actually have the right to keep my DS in school as he has an EHCP, but I dont want to over-stretch the Teachers who will have to keep working to cover the key-workers kids, so am choosing to keep him home.

My only concern is that with one of his problems being school refusal, getting him BACK into school, could be fun...

Rosebel · 19/03/2020 19:18

It's going to end up with key workers children not being able to go to school just because some parents are CF. Technically I could send my children to school but I feel safer with them being at home and I think the teachers are probably stressed enough anyway.

x2boys · 19/03/2020 19:21

My son has an EHCP and is at a special school so theoretically he could stay in school ,although i don't know if school.will stay open ,and he can't just go to any school,I,m in two minds about wether I want him to go though .

helpfulperson · 19/03/2020 19:22

It is very funny isn't it? It's like all the 'I can't self isolate because...………...' posts. This is why the Gov is going to have to move to lockdown sooner rather than later.

Spacecudet · 19/03/2020 19:24

I think people are really confused. They imagined when schools shut everything would shut down and they wouldn't have to work and would be able to stay at home. Now they're realising lots of us are still being asked to go in. No childcare is apparently not an excuse. Businesses are under extreme pressure. The government still don't seem to have released a comprehesive list of who the key workers are. This all makes for a lot of confusion.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 19/03/2020 19:25

I didn't particularly want the schools to close, it's just there was a certain inevitability about it and I just wanted some certainty.

Now I'm still in the dark because I don't know if I qualify. I work for the NHS but in an admin role, and DS2 has just gone onto the SEN register but didn't yet have an EHCP.

Xmasfairy86 · 19/03/2020 19:26

Have they released an actual list yet?

bettercaulsaul · 19/03/2020 19:28

I've been classed as a key worker by DD's nursery so she is staying, which is music to my ears - I've never wanted her to be out of nursery. I am however feeling a little less guilt as there's only going to be around 10 children in attendance.

StoodonLego · 19/03/2020 19:28

I've never wanted the schools to shut. I've always been completely against it and still am.

I think people will soon come to realise exactly how hard teachers work.

1Morewineplease · 19/03/2020 19:29

It sounds like schools are officially shut but schools remain open because most people are key workers.

InglouriousBasterd · 19/03/2020 19:31

Yep. I know somebody who was telling everyone how she has severe asthma two days ago and how scared she was. Today she’s insisting her child goes to school as she’s an essential worker (classroom assistant). Make your mind up.

ScarlettBlaize · 19/03/2020 19:35

@RufustheLanglovingreindeer I agree with your (implied) point. Presumably it's different posters.
Personally I took my kids out of school on Tuesday (didn't sign any petitions or shout at anyone about it) and am glad they have closed the schools, it was overdue.
