MN yesterday: The schools must be closed! Today: but not for my child!

That's it.

Everyone deserves to have their child in school. Because everyone's job is vital. Suddenly there's no risk to MY CHILD being at school. Only everyone else's kid is a risk/at risk.

This place does my head in sometimes.

Her 3 yr olds nursery has decided to stick 2 fingers up at the government and stay open

Yeah, prolonging the Covid-19 pandemic...that'll show them Hmm

Everyexitisanentrance · 19/03/2020 20:37

And some people just don't like spending time with their children. Some lack the ability to discipline a child and to put boundaries in place and then just expect teachers to sort everything out. Schools are meant to be places of learning but increasingly are places to correct society's failings

I do hope that at the end of this potentially 12 week shutdown some parents will have a lot more respect for schools and their rules

Firsttimelottie · 19/03/2020 20:39

Sorry to derail the thread but as we're on the topic of schools can anyone shed any light?

I'm an administrator at a doctor's surgery. I have received a survey from DC's school which has been sent to all parents asking whether we apply to any of the listed key worker roles. They listed "health" which I feel is quite vague tbh but I'm not sure if I fall under it?

I'll speak to work tomorrow but I've a feeling they'll say well you are NHS so yes select that one.

But I wasn't sure whether to flag to the school what my actual role is as I am able to make up some of my time by working during non school hours when DH is home. So I don't want to waste any space at the school as I am actually able to be home with DC.

SnoozyLou · 19/03/2020 20:40

Day 4 social distancing with a 2 year old, and I can see where they're coming from. Christ on a bike, the nursery should be charging us more.

In all seriousness though, no. They should be shut.

Firsttimelottie · 19/03/2020 20:40

Thanks for any help!

SnoozyLou · 19/03/2020 20:41

@Firsttimelottie I would say so, yes.

SnoozyLou · 19/03/2020 20:42

It's asking the sector, not your job title.

LittleYorkshireLass · 19/03/2020 20:42

What's making ME laugh is the sheer horror and despair on the faces (and in the voices) of some mothers interviewed on the news, (along with some who are griping on facebook,) at the thought of actually having to spend time with their OWN CHILDREN. No way to palm them off on anyone as most places are shut. Oh the sheer HORROR of having to spend time with, and look after your own children eh? Hmm

HasaDigaEebowai · 19/03/2020 20:43

So I don't want to waste any space at the school as I am actually able to be home with DC.

If you don't need the childcare don't take it. It isn't the best place for your child to be unless you don't have another option.

Healthyandhappy · 19/03/2020 20:44

Working from. Home but on phone to patients I'm a nurse and a keyworker. I've decided against school I'll use inlaws to watch 5 yr old and keep at home. Gna be a long 5 months

TinnedPearsForPudding · 19/03/2020 20:45

My DS school has asked for proof of "key worker" status. No problem providing this at all. He will only be going on the days when I work (obviously). I am so grateful that this facility is available to us

fairgroundsnack · 19/03/2020 20:49

I can’t believe some people of COURSE both parents have to be key workers.... the whole point is to minimise the number of kids going in. YES it’s really really hard to work from home with kids running around. That’s just what we are going to have to live with for a while. DH is likely to be classed as a key worker. I am a lawyer so not key. I would absolutely not expect places to be made available for my children just so I can WFH in peace.....!

WanderingTrolley1 · 19/03/2020 20:52

@BogRollBOGOF, yes, to everything you’ve said!

ScarlettBlaize · 19/03/2020 20:55

@Inmyownlittlecorner I assumed the schools would close due to social distancing & the aim of flattening the curve, but I didn’t think it would be for months.

Didn't you do any reading, or listening to the radio/TV, at all?

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 19/03/2020 20:55

I have always wanted the school to shut. I still do and can't understand why they haven't shut already.

Why the fuck do people have children if they can't bare to spend 2 minutes with them. It shouldn't come as a surprise, every single school holiday is full of people complaining what a hardship it is spend an entire day with your own child

Of course it won't be a holiday being locked home with the kids. It's not supposed to be one, we are trying to stop people from dying, or from wishing they were dead.

Until people get the concept, they will moan. They will also complain the day they need urgent medical care or their loved one is dying, but we left it too late.

Holdmenow · 19/03/2020 20:55

I’m looking at the uk from over here in Ireland and thinking WTAF!!Confused THE SCHOOLS ARE EITHER CLOSED OR NOT!! This key worker list just keeps getting bloody longer!!! Hmm

Iliketeaagain · 19/03/2020 20:59

Thing is @fairgroundsnack is that you may be able to do that, you may get paid whether you do much work or not.

There will be partners of key workers who if they don't work, don't get paid. And so it's all well and good saying we have to just live with that, but if it makes more financial sense for the key worker to not get paid than the other partner, then that's exactly what's going to happen. Because although key workers know they need to work, they also need to keep a roof over their head and their children fed in future and that may mean they stop work so a partner can earn more.

katseyes7 · 19/03/2020 20:59

l've just been speaking to my cousin. She's a primary school teacher, and they've been drawing up their plans for "only children of key workers" from Monday.
One parent is insisting she's a key worker.
She's an accountant for the local council. Not a nurse, or a doctor, or a police officer.
She could easily work from home with a telephone and a computer.
Fortunately the head teacher is no pushover and has shot her down in flames.

AriadnesFilament · 19/03/2020 21:00

Downing st sources are saying it’s one parent to qualify, not two.
See Guardian story from about half an hour ago.

DippyAvocado · 19/03/2020 21:03

Really?? I thought they wanted to minimise numbers.

Everyexitisanentrance · 19/03/2020 21:04

As my headmaster said today we don't want to become the holiday club for all. He is not forcing staff to come in and has asked for volunteers. it will be a childminding service. He wants to support the local community but does not want to put staff and their families at risk .... schools are in a catch 22 here. He has also made it very clear that it will be normal school hours only and not wrap around care.

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 19/03/2020 21:06

This key worker list just keeps getting bloody longer!!!

it's pathetic isn't it. Medical key workers are seeing first hand what is happening. They are not the one abusing the system, and will only put their kids at school as a very last and desperate resort. They don't want their own kids to catch it! And kids do, just because they mainly don't die from it doesn't mean any parent is casual about it. It's awful.

Didiusfalco · 19/03/2020 21:07

@BiscuitBarrels, I just read that in the Guardian too. That seems completely ridiculous and will seriously increase the school numbers. I've also been wondering up to what age secondaries will provide this as it seems a bit strange to have kids of a certain age who certainly wouldn't be in childcare in the holidays.

Everyexitisanentrance · 19/03/2020 21:08

Some parents may find that they will have to drop their children off at a different school occasionally. If a school is in a MAT they may decide on a week by week rotation depending upon staffing

Everyexitisanentrance · 19/03/2020 21:09

I think secondaries will only go up to Year 9. No self-respecting Year 10 or 11 would be seen in a child care facility
