With talk of London going into lockdown tomorrow can I remind second home owners that Cornwall has one hospital. Devon has four hospitals. Where I live in Devon there is no food in any of the supermarkets. Please, please stay away, our communities cannot deal with an influx.

bloody idiotic teenagers from Trinity School who have been running around Carlisle spitting at people are something else Maybe that will put the visitors off? I'm in Devon, very little in the shops round here yesterday, I'm going out to try and get bread today. Yesterday I tried 7 so if you come here don't expect to eat.

ByGrabtharsHammerWhatASavings · 19/03/2020 09:24

We definitely have more than one hospital in Cornwall! They are, however, few and far between, and constantly overstretched. I'm pretty sure Treliske is still on black alert from the winter flu season. We also have a huge number of older people living here. So yeh, now is not the time for your holiday. Please don't come to visit us this year.

TheSmelliestHouse · 19/03/2020 09:27

We're coastal, it's mostly elderly people and secind homes here. If they all come down our under resourced hospital will not cope and the elderly residents will die. Stay at home please (not your second home!! )

CecileMilkins · 19/03/2020 09:29

Perhaps those with second homes who are staying put might consider renting them out at well below usual rates to some of the many who are going to lose their homes because of job losses caused by Coronavirus?

daisypond · 19/03/2020 09:29

I know people mainly coming into London - lots of students away at universities are coming back to their London homes as universities close. But I suppose the numbers will indicate it is more the other way.

PickledLilly · 19/03/2020 09:32

I live in Devon, there’s nothing left in the shops here as it is!

gingersausage · 19/03/2020 09:32

@Littlemeadow123 you’ve got an... inside toilet? Wow! 🤩

OP it’s a nice thought but I fear your pleas will fall on deaf ears. Let’s face it, the types of people who have second homes already think “the countryside” is purely there for their convenience. Some of them don’t actually realise that people actually live and work there all the time.

Needmoresleep · 19/03/2020 09:33

First there is a three month moratorium on evictions and other measures to help people.

Second no one, but no one is doing property viewings at the moment. Its called social distancing.

Pollony · 19/03/2020 09:33

It isn't the second homers being selfish. We want your money but we don't want you

We want the money and the people when they arent bringing disease and overwhelming the already small health services, when they are then no thanks we dont want either!

Iknewyouwerewaitingforme · 19/03/2020 09:37

I agree but sadly I think the vast majority of people with the luxury of a second home out in the sticks will probably go to it. But then a lot of people also feel more secure being in a city with much better access to/far wider range of hospitals/supermarkets etc etc- so who knows.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 19/03/2020 09:38

Not in Devon or anywhere with a high rate of holiday homes but completely agree! Please please stay put and keep yourself isolated where able.

Camopetals · 19/03/2020 09:40

I'm an essential worker based in London. I could conceivably up sticks and go stay with relatives whilst still working remotely.. But like many thousands of ordinary, hardworking Londoners I will stay and bunker down with the rest of my community. I have seen nothing but love and cooperation in my corner of the capital.. We live in a very densely populated block/ complex so I set up a WhatsApp group to try and match helpers with anyone who might need supplies dropping off and I have been absolutely overwhelmed with people wanting to do their bit. We're not all selfish, tube dwelling, blood suckers thank you very much. In fact most of us are just normal folk, quite scared at the moment as this virus is ripping through us quicker than anywhere else, a bit of kindness and compassion wouldn't go amiss (in both directions).

onegirlandherdog · 19/03/2020 09:47

Yep. North Wales resident here. We have an elderly population and our hospitals will be stretched to the limit.

Pickles89 · 19/03/2020 09:49

I'm in Cornwall. It took a full hour for an ambulance to come when I had breathing difficulties 3 or 4 years ago. There weren't even any special circumstances then!

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 19/03/2020 09:50

Cornwall doesn’t have one hospital - that’s drama mongering. But all the hospitals in Cornwall are part of one NHS Trust.

No you're wrong. It has one hospital Treliske which is the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust which has only just come out of an inadequate rating by CQC and has been on opal 4 alert throughout the winter - actually since last summer and is on the verge of collapse. There is (was?) a small community type hospital in Penzance which served West Cornwall but it couldn't (never could anyway) cope with emergencies in the same way as RCHT. People living in East Cornwall are referred into Derriford in Plymouth (which was rated as inadequate by CQC and is struggling still) and some people around parts of North Cornwall go to North Devon District Hospital which is also on the verge of collapse and is mostly now rum by the RD&E as far as I can recall.

So no, the South West can't cope with extra people, especially when the demographics of the region mean that there are some very old and vulnerable people living there.

AddressLabel · 19/03/2020 09:54

Include people with caravans in this too, so many people on FB sites say they are going away, Camping sites saying they are staying open.
I pass 2 caravan parks within 3 miles of each other on my way to work. They are nearly full.

PlugholePencil · 19/03/2020 09:54

Completely irresponsible. This is being shared all over the local groups I’m part of.

To say please don't go to your second home
Needmoresleep · 19/03/2020 09:56

Agreed, Camopetals. And stay well.

I really hope they will soon have a test for anti-bodies, and that a good number of us will be shown to have been infected but were symptom free. Which will open the way for us to do more for neighbours. depending on how long it was circulating a lot of us have already been exposed.

puptent · 19/03/2020 09:56

Yup, we were due to go to N. Norfolk on hols. Wide beaches. Fresh air. Lots of sky! Sorry, Norfolk. We love you but we'll leave you to your space. Stay safe.

(Besides, my local corner shop guy here in London hides the 9 pack loo roll out back for his regulars).

Pericombobulations · 19/03/2020 09:59

As someone who has an Easter break holiday booked in Cornwall every year, is looking incredibly likely we wont come in the next month. I am on the list of people who the government have said is most at risk and my mum is over 80 now. We both darent take the risk.

Partly as we also had to drive over an hour to find a minor injury unit which had an open xray department on a Sunday. We were told that if we needed to go to a clinic for broken bones, then we would need to go to the nearest hospital running the clinic which we were told was Plymouth, not even the same county.

I always dreamed of retiring to Cornwall but once I was diagnosed with MS, I cant risk moving to the health care system you have there. I am terrified how it will cope if the virus hits you hard. Im sad, as I live for my holidays there, BUT living to come another time is more important.

My brother, however, is pretty selfish and still planning on visiting. He doesnt listen to me, so nothing I say would make him change his mind. I hope his wife puts him straight before then.

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2020 10:00

Plughole I despair
Awful for people seeing droves arrive to further stretch services

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 19/03/2020 10:01

With the Lakes having a high case rate I’m hoping that will act as a deterrent..

DartmoorDoughnut · 19/03/2020 10:01

How about everyone stays where the fuck they are and we all try to get through this as best we can.

Firelink · 19/03/2020 10:02

I am off to Devon on Sat

TitsInAbsentia · 19/03/2020 10:03

This is why having people spreading the rumour about "London going in to lockdown" really isn't helpful, we could do with the PM busting the myth pronto.
