Hi,
Trying to think of the industries and companies that are taking the most hit right now, so we can ensure to support afterwards. Trying to give dd an idea of how much this actually affects.

Family businesses

  • theme parks
  • Trains

What else would be really struggling right now and losing money?

It can be anything from holiday resorts, to parks, amusement parks, public transport, family businesses

So many people I know involved in weddings and events too. Right now many events just postponed but with no idea how long and things

SimonJT · 19/03/2020 07:20

A lot of my friends work in the entertainment industry, the majority have been laid off. As it’s a freelance industry no notice, nothing.

I imagine hospitality and the leisure sector are similar.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 19/03/2020 07:38

I'm a music teacher, self employed so I'll have nothing. And when this is all over, a large proportion of the pupils will have had such a break from it that they won't go back to learning the instrument, because they're out of the habit of practising.

Salene · 19/03/2020 07:46

Oil & Gas

Oil at its lowest in 17 years , lots of redundancies to come soon - again

Oldhaggard · 19/03/2020 07:50

I'm in hospitality. Lost 80% of our bookings for restaurant and functions in a few hours after gov announcement. Half the staff laid off immediately. Other half don't know if we'll get paid as all depends on trade. Can't cancel rest and refund money as there isn't enough. Best thing for our industry is to order us to shut down and then we know where we are and can access help, trying to stay open for those who don't want to cancel their functions is bleeding money because there's no one else coming through the doors. It's a nightmare.

I work in foreign currency exchange...i will be surprised if i still have a job when this blows over....im terrified...im a single mum to 3 kids...2 at uni and struggling as they have lost their bar jobs.

HolidayLetter · 19/03/2020 08:00

Holiday lets. I now face months of no income at all. Everyone has cancelled. However, the bills still have to be paid. I am a single mother with two children. It is terrifying.

DivisionBelles · 19/03/2020 08:00

Holiday lettings. I'm terrified I'll lose my job.

JKScot4 · 19/03/2020 08:02

My DP runs a taxi/airport transfer business, he’s lost 90% of bookings in 2 days, he’ll be off the road in a week 😞

userxx · 19/03/2020 08:14

Restaurant and cafe owners, all the travel industry, courier drivers, accountants, retail........... I could go on 😞

EnglishGirlApproximately · 19/03/2020 08:18

I work in the travel industry. The whole industry is on its knees and many agents and operators are now working without pay to help customers. My job is safe for now but we can only sustain 6 months of this. I've seen two small tour operators and several agents already fail and conservative estimates are that 50% of operators could fail. Those amazing small operators who are destinations specialists are really struggling.

Knowivedonewrong · 19/03/2020 09:09

I work for a company that supplies wraparound childcare and holiday clubs in schools.
A small company with 30 staff members, I don't think it will survive.

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 19/03/2020 09:28

@Kahlua4me

THIS THIS AND THIS.

Theresnobslikeshowb · 19/03/2020 09:41

Plumbers
Electricians
Builders
Teaching assistants
Restaurants
Waiting staff
Hair dressers
Small independent shops
Ice cream vans
EPC cert guys
Estate agents
Pilots
Air cabin crew
Taxi drivers
Airport staff in any capacity
Delivery drivers
Beauticians
Tattooists

And I could go on. Anyone that does not provide something of need which is a matter urgency is at risk.

Safe are teachers, health and social care, delivery drivers for essential items, IT support, police, army, politicians.

Then you have the uncertain:- council staff for example, as some will be others are down to skeleton teams and it will depend on their contracts. Factories that have stopped or reduced production, depending on what they are manufacturing.

For so, so, so many it will come down to the contract they read and signed. Even two people doing the same job, who signed at different times may be protected differently.

mamansnet · 19/03/2020 09:44

I've just changed career into event management. The entire industry has shut down completely. Absolute nightmare.

itbemay1 · 19/03/2020 09:46

Taxi drivers, in particular black cabs in london. No one in town.

Small businesses will suffer
It's devastatingly sad.

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2020 09:49

All the Uber drivers across the world

StillDisappointed · 19/03/2020 10:08

@itbemay1 Finally someone who understands. I've been shouting from the rooftops about Black Cab drivers and everyone is just meh... making suggestions that they can deliver food or medicine.

@MarshaBradyo And black cab drivers too?

IntermittentParps · 19/03/2020 10:15

Most people in the arts are screwed. All freelancers whose jobs have now disappeared for the next few months, and little alternatives for making money.
Yeah, this. My DP is an artist and works a lot on participatory group art activities, as well as with schools. All the companies/agencies/people he works with are basically fucked, and therefore so is he.

On a broader note on the same subject, I wonder how the big galleries like Tate etc will weather it. Exhibitions are planned years in advance and the costs of insurance/transport/hanging etc are high, plus a lot of works that a gallery has on loan for a show presumably are on loan only for a limited amount of time and then have to be returned.

And theatres. It's catastrophic for them and they employ or contract an awful lot of people.

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2020 10:17

StillDisappointed of course I feel for both but taxi drivers have been listed a few times I was adding.

allaboardthesinkingship · 19/03/2020 10:18

My husband whose a specialist dentist

itbemay1 · 19/03/2020 10:19

@StillDisappointed work for them has all but stopped. They can deliver stuff but not for free! They have families to support too. A friend has 2 small children, wife SAHM reliant on his salary. Same with lots of other industries, I feel awful for everyone in the same boat, the government need to step in with an umbrella payment for all to keep everyone afloat and stop the added stresses.

Stay safe

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2020 10:19

Yes re Tate etc I wonder about all the big galleries too maybe they have a buffer and depends if they are leasing or own those expensive sites

StillDisappointed · 19/03/2020 10:30

@itbemay1 My dad is a black cab driver in London. He's nearly 60 and working 18 hour days whilst barely breaking even. It's costing him money to work, he isn't even making enough to keep the cab on the road; let alone for food, bills and rent.
He also has 2 of the conditions on the list which place him in the high-risk group for COVID-19.

Yet, he's still working because he can't afford to try and stay at home; he still needs to try and earn money. The government offer him nothing.
He wants to work, is happy to work, actually likes his job but has had the rug pulled out from underneath him

itbemay1 · 19/03/2020 10:36

@StillDisappointed so sad to hear. Does he own his own cab? Our friend rents so £200pw plus diesel before any profit. All the best to your dad
